Dinsdale's post in the thread about the team for Saturday has got me thinking:
"Very easy job to pick a starting eleven from a squad of 15. Whites still trying to shed the pounds so that leaves 14 starters. On paper it doesnt look a bad team but can we stay injury and suspension free?"
I'm particularly on about the bolded bit about White. I agree that White isn't fit enough atm to be considered a starter, and more than likely it will be Brunt-Taylor as our front two. Now, maybe this is me having an 'Oldie' moment, but personally I don't find that acceptable.
This is a bloke who has known for almost two months (signed 8th June) that he will have a new set of supporters to impress this season, at a club where the expectations are sky-high (from some) and the eyes of the Conference will most likely be upon us. That's two months he's had to get himself fit enough to be considered for a place in the starting lineup for the season's opener against Grimsby on Saturday (his job, surely?), and I don't think he is.
Instead, a guy who hasn't played a competitive match since 8th November 2013 (Brunt) will more than likely start up top whilst White is only deemed fit enough to come off the bench.
Am I being harsh? Tin hat at the ready...

Completely agree I'm afraid. Unless there are some circumstances that we're unaware of, he should definitely be in shape to be capable of lasting a full 90 minutes by now. Granted, he has suffered several injuries in the last few years, but I'm not sure how this affects his general fitness, particularly as he is now supposedly injury-free.

It's not acceptable.
Fitness (as opposed to being injury free) should be a basic prerequisite of a pro sportsman.

Last time DC spoke about White was a week or two wasn't it? Is it possible he is back to full fitness yet? He looked sharp against Cov when he came on, hit the post with his first touch!

It's pretty simple, calories out more than calories in and you lose weight. He will be able to eat 2500-3000 calories a day and stay neutral. Add the fact he is training several times a week and he will be able to eat 3,000 cals and still lose weight.
Just to give you an idea...
Large Dominoes pizza - 2500 calories Big Mac Meal 1350 calories Pint of Beer 180 calories.
When I was training:
Porridge with milk - 300 calories Brown Rice, Grilled Fish and Veg and a pint of water - about 500 calories.
Which tells me he is not looking after himself. As people have said above, when you are trying to progress your career and impress a whole bunch of people, can you not live the good lifestyle for at least a few months? When I cut out alcohol and junk food, it was almost impossible to eat enough calories as you would be so bloated.
As far as the squad is concerned, we will have at least 3 more additions as well as flexibility to add during the season. We also have the four first year pros who need to be given a chance at some point (Lockyer being a good example of where that has worked). Dominic Thomas for one looked good at Yeovil. I trust by DC, and his job depends on this team. For me DC has been far more positive than negative (and there has been plenty of them with previous managers).
We will be working from a squad of 22 and matchdays will only involve 16 players.

Clearly, the squad is thin - in fact too thin for the inevitable forthcoming injuries and suspensions. On the positive side, the quality of some of the players AT THIS LEVEL (i.e. Conference) is good. More players needed (of acceptable quality) and soon!
Regarding fitness, I totally agree with the above. A professional sportsman should display the necessary commitment and self discipline to stay fit (injuries are excepted, although some players do seem to remain on the treatment table longer than others). After all, such an attitude will prolong his career and earning power!

Bit like when I used to see Harrold in Waitrose buying gluten free lentils and stuff.
Then he got injured and I saw him buying coke and cakes and pies and all that.

Good balance to the squad, what appears to be a good attitude all round. Three more signings this week and all is good. Last year was a shambles... no quantity, quality or balance.

Barnet will tell all, for me.

I think it depends. 'Fitness' is very different to what DC sees as 'fitness' in my opinion, you only have to look at Parkes' weight loss to see that. We all heard what Alan Pardew thought of Rickie Lambert's fitness when he joined Southampton, and he'd just scored 29 goals in League One!! www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/southampton/9762263/Southampton-striker-Rickie-Lamberts-new-lease-of-life-comes-from-living-like-a-saint.html - about half way down the page. It is a little worrying about White, but those comments were a few weeks ago now. I think he looked sharp against Coventry, should have scored but his shot came off the inside of the post - certainly didn't look unfit or overweight to me. Brunt was a little sluggish, but I completely understand that and I think after a month of consistent, competitive football we'll see him back to his best White's goalscoring record speaks for itself, and I'm sure he'll do well here.

It is a worry imo. They all started pre season the same time I think and the main purpose is to get the squad fit for the first game,so unless there was a problem with Jamie that we don't know about, why would he take longer to reach match fitness than the others I'm wondering.

A squad of 15 senior players a couple of days before the start of the season is a big gamble. We could easilly lose two or three to injury first game and then be reliant on unproven first year pros who even in our league days normally end up at Gloucester city or Yate. We dont have a single spare defender either which for a team playing 5 at the back is a worry.
At this stage it would be worth signing Mitchell or Higgins on short deals as at least they would slot straight in especially whilst Turley gets fit if signed. We look a bit healthier in midfield with Clarke, Gosling and Harrison to come in but with White and Brunt returning feom bad injuries i hope we have another striker on board by the end of tmw.

Jamies had a few injuries over the years and a few issues with his weight. Hopefully being at a more proffessional set up (crikey !!!) this will be the year thata put behind him.

It is a very small squad,as for quality only time will tell, attitude looks good which is very important, but as has been said a couple of injuries and we are in trouble especialy if there at the back. I would guess DC knows his starting eleven so any additions now will not change that. Just want to watch some footy now, really looking forward to seeing the team in action. If Jamie White isn't fit now after a full preseason, will he ever be

My take on this is that they have given him a more gradual build up to match sharpness to ensure there are no set backs to his rehabilitation... So the exercise alone isn't fully shifting the weight put on whilst he had his feet up. The "timber" probably is of the Lambert variety now - bearing in mind his finish to the season just gone. So he is Capable of being played whilst he has got it but better if he did not have it. If DC is also doing his food shopping then by September he will be the real deal!

He looked sharp against Coventry, and it's not like he's an absolute beef cake! Considering DC's last interview over his fitness was around 2 weeks ago so I wouldn't be suprised if he was close to good fitness levels.
