Thought it was pretty average today. Positives and negatives to take from the game.
Postives:
We looked solid at CB. Jon-Lewis and Connell will be a good partnership this season, I thought we dealt with them well. Parkes looked better, McChrystal is dependable, Lockyer was out muscled a couple of times but otherwise looked solid too.
Matty Taylor is still sharp and will score goals with the right service
Sinclair is an animal who runs and runs, we look again very solid at the center of the park
Gosling made an impact when he came on, is a good option. Wouldn't mind seeing him as the furthest forward in that midfield three. I also thought the changes were, at majority, good.
Negatives:
The big one - creativity from midfield. No winger means someone in that midfield needs to properly press forward. That man is Monkhouse and he looks a decent footballer but he didn't impact the game as much as I'd like. That HAS to improve if the formation is to work.
We still, quite obviously, look a couple of players short.
Although the changes were in majority good, I would have sent Jamie White on earlier.
As much as i'd have loved the three points today, it truely stuck me as a game that neither team wanted to lose. I can see why, no-one wants to start negatively and when we switched to 4-4-2 there were a couple of times Lewis and Connell were 2 on 2 with Parkes and Macca and I got a bit worried. First half was very even throughout, second half Grimsby started better and we finished better. In all honesty, its a decent point - my main worry is that the Barnet game comes quick after and I rate them in this division, a bad result and it's 1 point from 4. I genuinely think we'll need to play better than we did today to match or beat Barnet, that's not to say I think we played badly but we need to step it up. I think it'll come but creativity from center midfield does worry me.

Not convinced by Leadbitter. Smith looks a big loss. Sinclair is a workhorse but lacked a bit of quality. Final ball was shocking all game. That definitely needs working on.
on a more positive note, Grimsby are also favourites and although I can't say it was a great display, we probably edged it. Crying out for some creativity though.

Work in progress, we will need to keep on recruiting as and when the right players become available/found, refreshing style of play today from the turgid crap of last season, we have to be patient and see how it pans out, not unhappy with that today, as above a little more creativity required, I think we have pretty decent options up top, this team needs time to gel in the competetive game situation.
Very early opinion is, I am more than happy in the long run to watch what we did today, patients is required, and I am sure we will be more than competetive at this level?

I think it'll come but creativity from center midfield does worry me. Couldn't agree more! Would say our back 3 were absolutely outstanding and doubt there will be any better central defender partnership in the entire divsion. Midfield majorly lacks creativity and HAS to be addressed if we are to stand any chance of success. Won't be too harsh on the strikers as they had no service at all with one exception - and Taylor should have scored. All in all I can't slate them though. Brunt should have come off earlier though as you say as, despite holding the ball up well a few times, his first touch was very poor (which is to be expected as he's bound to be rusty after being out for so long).

Alright chaps. Not the most exciting game was it. GTFC point of view:
Personally, I wouldn't have taken a point if offered before the game, but now we got one, I see it as an acceptable result bearing in mind our missing players. We had 6 players unavailable today (5 of which would've started). We missed our attacking players and wingers but the defenders that came in did everything that was asked of them.
A game of little chances. Taylor had a great chance for you lot but McKeown was out to him quick. For us, McLaughlin hit one into the ground from 10 yards which Mildenhall palmed over, and then John-Lewis should've scored after a rebound.
I thought we were very comfortable but didn't threaten your final third enough, which probably means you felt the same about your side.
First half you edged for the majority (the first 35mins at least) in terms of the ball being in our half more than yours. You had a few spells of smart possession and passing to switch play, mixed with a lot of long driven balls into the corners. The BT Sport guys highlighted the surprisingly very long grass and suggested it was set up to hit long balls onto.
In the second half I thought we were edging the play until the last 10/15 minutes. In this half you seemed to abandon trying to play the football you showed signs of in the 1st half, and went long to the big striker every time. Only in the last 10 minutes did you start to work a few overlaps down the flanks after your formation change.
All in all not the worst result for either side. BT Sport probably called it right post-match in saying we are probably 2 low scoring teams, judging on that one performance you'd have to say it looks that way. I'd like to think when we get our pacey creative players back we will be more threatening but John-Lewis (whilst a good target man) will never be a prolific scorer.
All the best

Can`t really disagree with any of the above. I thought for our first game down here we looked alright, and the signings DC has made look to be good ones.
Agree though, we do need a couple of creative players still.
Onwards and upwards! UTG!

It reminded me of a League 2 match last season, guess that was because of playing Grimsby(ex league and conference play offs),think our next home game against Telford will hit it home we are in the Conference. But I was really glad to get back to watching football again, everyone seemed to feel the same, good turnout too. Good to see plenty of familiar faces, looking forward now to a season underway.UTG

Back three were solid, can't fault any of them. In fact, I was pleased to see them trying to play it out from the back, rather than hoofing it (although now I say that, I recall Macca hoofing it on several occasions, but you can see it wasn't our only tactic).
Brown was solid, didn't offer much going forward (crossing wasn't great), but dependable. Leadbitter looks very technical and attacking, and he put in some great 1 vs 1 challenges, which he did say when he signed was his speciality. Give Leads some time, he looks decent.
Midfield trio did alright, I thought. Sinclair ran a lot, tackled a lot and won a lot, but on the ball offered little creatively, although I don't think that's why he was brought in. Mansell was composed and swept up well in the midfield. His passing and leadership is great to see. Monkhouse was poor for me today, didn't do a lot on the ball and seemed a bit lost in the middle.
Brunt for me was hot and cold. In the air he didn't win a lot, but that's the service he got, I suppose. He had a good ten/fifteen minutes in the second half, when he played that brilliant ball to Taylor, and some other good passes too. Still, he went missing for periods of the game, and doesn't look like the energetic striker we signed two years ago. Taylor was class. Not much to say about him, other than his passing and willingness to shoot was great to watch. He maybe could have done better with his chance, but it was a difficult chance. I hope he can stay fit and get some form going.
The subs? Clarke was unimpressive for me, but we changed the shape and created more chances as a result of that, so that's good. White barely got a touch of the ball. He's here to finish chances, and he didn't get any. Gosling looked very lively. He's a bright footballer that is by far our most creative asset. He was quick, wasn't afraid to take on his man and thought about every ball he played. Good impact sub, but I'd like to see him start against Barnet!
All in all today, we're still shaking off the pre-season and adjusting to non-league. Our first competitive game was definitely competitive, and wasn't boring. Lots of positives to take from today - We just need those two extra players and we look a good, solid team.

Not convinced by 5-3-2 which it was a lot more then 3-5-2. Onwards and upwards

Not too impressed with the length of the grass. If that has been done on purpose to encourage hoofball, poor. If it hasn't, the groundsman needs a word (the official line from him to BTS was that it grew overnight)

We looked more comfortable and threatening when we went 4-4-2, but even then, why put a left footer in the right and a right footer on the left? Crying out to get natural width deep into the final third on both sides and stretch an otherwise comfortable looking Grimsby back line. Over all though, there was nothing to back up the favourites tag, far from it, we look sadly lacking particularly in midfield and up front. I didn't see anything today to give any hope of defying the odds of bouncing straight back What a shame to be watching Dis playing against us

What struck me more anything was the way every player showed massive commitment to the cause. It may not have been pretty but it was a joy to see.

Overall a good effort. Taylor, Sinclair and gosling really stood out for me and back 3 were solid. Surprised it took DC so long to switch Brunt and worried about midfield - not sure we were ready for the physicality, was quite rough and tumble at times. And less hoofing it please. Looking forward to Barnet, then the real non league starts!

All the best Pretty much how I saw it and overall a draw was a fair result. Nothing much between the sides and both teams problems in the attacking third will hopefully be addressed in the coming weeks. Yours by the return of suspended / injured players and ours by the 2 or 3 signings the manager has been promising us for the last 3 weeks. As Grimsby are the only non league side we've seen so far I can't really comment on either teams chances for the coming season but most seem to think you guys are a good bet for the title so hopefully we're not a million miles away. Even if we miss out on the play off's and like to think we could hold down a position in the top half and at least put ourselves in a position to maybe sneak a top 5 place next April. See you at Blundell in February.

I didn't go today. I had to work. However, I caught half an hour in lunch break on the radio in the car and the rest of sky soccer centre.
Gotta say I feel totally deflated. Dunno what I expecting really but maybe its just hit me. Like the enormity of the task at hand. Its gonna take some time for the team to... click, but I hope its sooner rather than later.
We got another tough matchup coming. Not sure I see any points in it. Things are gonna get messy here I reckon. Just hope we haven't just built another average squad. Credit to the players for putting in 100% I think maybe I just need to see them in person maybe to feel we can really give this a shot.

RAS ... I left today much happier compared to pre-match; lots of positives and Grimsby are going to be a contender come the end of the season and I think we shaded it. We are lacking in midfield creativity but hopefully DC can address this. Glass half-full.

I left today seeing no real difference from last season, hoofball, no creativity and still after two years a team totally lacking of any pace and an inability to cross a football. On the plus side we did seem to take throw ins quicker....

Ras, a huge issue is we have three or our players a month off where they should be but they have to play because of the squad size. The players look better then last season however i was not expecting long ball and was expecting a back 3 not the back 5 we had. If we can bring in 3 good loan signings i cant see that we cant challenge for the play offs.
