Brief Synopsis – Grimsby (H)
1. DC was correct about his team playing at a higher tempo and with more energy than last season’s team but the quality on show wasn’t much better. There were far too many aimless hoofs and hopeful punts. We were too slow on the break and we lacked the coordination and movement needed to hurt the opposition.
2. Both defences dominated and chances for both sides were few and far between. The first half was a non event but in the second half Grimsby missed a sitter from 2 yards and Mildenhall made a superb one handed save from point blank range. Our only real moment of excitement came when Taylor went clean through but hit his shot straight at the keeper. He should have done better. Gosling might have done better as well in the scramble near the end.
3. We finished the game strongly but never looked like we were going to score. On this showing lack of goals could still be a big problem for us.
4. Good performances from Mildenhall, Brown, McCrystall, and Lockyer at the back and the energy of Stuart Sinclair is a joy to watch it offers something we have lacked in recent times. Disappointing showings from others, Brunty struggled to win anything in the air and looks a shadow of the player we saw when he first arrived from Stoke. Monkhouse also had a disappointing game considering he has done well at a higher level than this.
5. Grimsby were well organised and will be one of the better teams we will face so although it would have been great to win it was good not to lose and a draw which was a fair result is not the end of the world.

I think the formation is too defensive and Monkhouse and Brunt are not match fit but had to play anyway. Not all bad but unless we get some creativity into midfield itl be tough.
Back 3 look great as did Sinclair and Taylor

Agree with almost all of that FTB.
Macca and the 2 Toms were superb defensively but all three have poor distribution. I don't think they suit 3-5-2.
I think Mansell might have to re-invent himself like Stevie G into a sitting defensive midfielder. Don't think he has the legs for a box-to-box midfielder.
Brunty looked 3 or 4 games away from match sharpness. He will come good but it will take time. He needs to sit out Tuesday night.
Monkhouse wasn't involved much but he showed one or two touches of class to suggest he'll be an important player this season.
Gosling needs to start on Tuesday. He injected a bit of of pace & creativity when he came on.
People need to remember we had a fully fit squad to choose from. Zero injuries. Grimsby had half-a-dozen starters missing.
Most people seem to be cup half-full. Sadly, I'm cup half-empty. Hope I'm wrong.

I want Tom Parkes to stop pretending to be a creative player. If he keeps p!55ing about with it he is going to cost us.

My views on yesterday's game.
For the most part we looked defensively solid, the back three have a great understanding and McChrystal commands the other two well. I feel confident in that defence with Mildenhall behind them. We'll have one of the tightest defences in the division this season.
The wing-backs added stability to the formation and got forward on occasions. The main problem was that they had to run the whole channel by themselves. Whilst we were playing 3-5-2 there weren't any overlaps on the wings. The reason that Leadbitter was out of the game for long periods was that he was isolated. Sinclair provided options for Brown on the left, but Monkhouse was too central for me. He was a left-footed player on the right of midfield and this may have been the cause of the problem.
With wing-backs having defensive responsibilities, our main counters came through the middle and we didn't get the quick passing in this area enough. This play improved when we went 4-4-2 and we were in good positions on a couple of occasions but unfortunately Ollie Clarke couldn't react so soon after coming on. A strange first 5 minutes for him. Overall the midfield kept things ticking over in possession, especially Mansell. However, too often after patient play we passed it back to Parkes, McChrystal and Lockyer to boot it long. Lockyer's long passing was actually impressive and he put some good balls in but struggled with some short passes.
Brunt battled hard up front as did Taylor who did well for not a big man. They kept the Grimsby defence busy and fashioned one clear-cut chance for Taylor. Overall, possession in these areas was good but we couldn't play the final ball or were often unwilling to take a shot.
I'm confident that we'll be hard to beat this season but may struggle at the other end. I like the 3-5-2 system but think we need a way to work a winger into the system occasionally. Preferably this winger would be right-footed with a good delivery. I feel that Brunt, Taylor and White will be a handful in the box with better delivery.

The occasions we did get balls in from wide, even corners, were too loopy and high. Our crossing needs to vary otherwise Taylor and the smaller cms won't benefit.

According to the BBC Website, there were no corners. Love how it says that, but then the text commentary says differently: 84:26 Corner, Bristol Rovers. 76:32 Corner, Bristol Rovers. 70:01 Corner, Grimsby Town. 58:22 Corner, Bristol Rovers. 50:59 Corner, Bristol Rovers. 47:29 Corner, Grimsby Town. 36:49 Corner, Bristol Rovers. 22:40 Corner, Bristol Rovers. 14:34 Corner, Grimsby Town.
