BRISTOL Rovers chairman Steve Hamer says he would like the Football League to consider splitting League One and League Two into North and South divisions.
Hamer is representing Rovers at the Football League meeting in Portugal this week where controversial proposals for the introduction of a 'fifth division' are being discussed.
The Rovers chairman is not an advocate of that particular idea, but he said: "If the Football League really wanted to carry out a review, I'd like to see the Football League look at the distances that clubs in the lower two divisions have to travel.

"I think there is certainly some merit in looking at splitting League One and League Two into a League One North and a League One South.
"Travel and the costs incurred both in terms of time and money is one of the biggest issues that lower division clubs are face with.
"We'd get more derbies and bigger crowds as it would reduce the amount of miles that not only the team but also the supporters would have to travel.

"It would certainly serve to eradicate the ridiculousness of having to travel from Bristol to Carlisle on an Easter Monday or from Bristol to Hartlepool on a Tuesday night.
"I'd have the winner of each regionalised league going into the Championship and then eight teams from both divisions playing off for the final two places.
"If you really want to shake things up – and I'm aware that it is never likely to happen – you could relegate six teams from the Championship.

"It would reduce the amount of meaningless games towards the end of every season because almost every club in the Championship would have something to play for right up until the last whistle."

Which would mean the national league being north and south too I guess.
I can see the sense only...Only....if teams are designated as being either north or south and always stay as that the league's being adjusted to accommodate after relegations . I think it is ridiculous that Gloucester city are playing in the national league north !

I guess there would have to be some enforced changes along the way as you are never going to keep the equal amount of regionalised teams in their own designated region

Needs a revamp whatever....any system that says Gloucestershire is in the north of England is insane.

Don't like his idea for the north/south leagues at all, we'll be back playing many of the same crap league 2 clubs we've just left behind. I'd much rather go to Sheff Utd and Bolton than Crawley or Barnet

I'd much rather go to Sheff Utd and Bolton than Crawley or Barnet Quite agree. The fact is the proposed league would consist of approx 50% of old league 2 teams. The standards would therefore drop. Whilst we would take good followings around this regional league, crap sides like Barnet, Crawley, Stevenage etc etc would still only bring at most a couple of hundred to the Mem. Contrast that with the likely away sell out crowds for the likes of Coventry, Sheffield Utd, Bolton etc etc. No, for me, we would be playing poor sides and I think our home gates would suffer as a result. There ought to be a way that the league fixtures could be engineered to prevent long distance slogs for bank holiday and Tuesday night fixtures, it's just that the league don't give a stuff and leave fixture selection to the luck of the computer draw.

I can see the logic in his argument, however, I can't see it ever happening whilst the National league isn't regional itself, it would make more sense to me if the FL imposed a rule that where ever possible they try and avoid games like Rovers v Carlisle on Bank Holidays/Tuesday nights.
Not sure about this apparent "love in" with Wycombe what's prompted all that, just a dig at NH, as the abandoned game is not something a lot us will simply forget.

We can now see the landing lights on the runway, lets hope we get final clearance to land from airport control.

This is the problem. Everyone accepts that we have some long old trips. Often the trip is more fun than the game. However organising games of anything over say 2 hours on a weekday shouldn't be allowed. And if it has to be over that distance due to fixture clashes then the organisers should try and arrange it to be the next closest team. Going to Luton on a Tuesday is one thing but Hartlepool, unless it's a cup game, is disgraceful.
