Premier League, EFL & FA introduce new player behaviour rules
4 hours ago From the section Football 617 Share this page Players surround the referee Yellow cards could now be shown when two or more players from a team surround a match official Plans designed to reduce "intolerable behaviour" by players and managers in English football have been announced.
In a statement, the Premier League, English Football League and Football Association said poor conduct has reached "unacceptable levels".
Starting this season, red cards will be issued to players who confront match officials and use offensive language or make gestures towards them.
Behaviour within the technical areas will also be more rigorously enforced.
Not one player has been sent off in the Premier League for insulting or abusive language towards a match official in the last five seasons.
But Premier League chairman Richard Scudamore said there has been concern "for some time" that players have been "overstepping the mark".
"It is our collective position that these types of behaviour should no longer be tolerated," he added.
"Things happen in the heat of the moment during fast and highly competitive football. We still want to see the passion fans enjoy and demand, but players and managers have to be aware there are lines that should not be crossed."
Offences which could earn players a yellow card
Visibly disrespectful behaviour to any match official; An aggressive response to decisions; Confronting an official face to face; Running towards an official to contest a decision; Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards match officials; Physical contact with any match official in a non-aggressive manner; A yellow card for at least one player when two or more from a team surround a match official. New red card offences
If a player confronts match officials and uses offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards them; Physical contact with match officials in an aggressive or confrontational manner.

Remember that rule they bought in a few years back, dissent at a free kick and you get penalised 10 yards. What ever happened to that....?

Since when was swearing at the ref allowed anyway? It happens. The good ref's give as good as they take! These new 'rules' are good though. Football should be more like rugby and cricket in this respect.

About bloody time! The only player who should approach the ref should be the captain.

About bloody time! The only player who should approach the ref should be the captain. Agree 100 per cent. Accept the decision and get on with it. Some premier league games will be down to five a side by half time until the players get up to speed.

What's the betting a couple of smaller teams go down to 9 men in the first few weeks of the season, while the bigger teams carry on exactly as they are, and all this fizzles out by Christmas?

These aren't new rules tho really. They are just going to implement the rules (maybe) No word on wrestling at corners, then.

Dermot Gallagher has said on Sky that a ref can't see everything that goes on at a corner.... While showing a bloke having his shirt actually ripped from his body. If a ref can't see that going on, then maybe he's in the wrong job.

I've always said refs should implement rugby rules argue is always a penalty(freekick) ,touch the ref is an instant sending off, ban and club disciplinary. if you take a football game where say 3 players are giving the ref sh**, at times if that was rugby the ref would blow up for a penalty, if things carried on he would blow up again, in the past ive seen a team gain almost a whole pitch length due to arguing with the ref, thing is it's so engrained on rugby players they dont often give the ref sh**

When I was coaching my son's team (under 11's) I asked the ref to clarify a couple of decisions he'd made in the first half. We are allowed to do this by the way. In fact it's encouraged.
I got an eight week ban, after I told him he should read the rules of the game.
By the way the ref was about 16. There was no swearing, no shouting. Just me talking and a little frustrated. He was definitely listening to what the home coach was yelling at him.

Was thinking the same. Man Utd and Chelsea players will carry on getting away with it whilst the likes of Burnley and Bournemouth will be getting players sent off every week because of it.

Since when was swearing at the ref allowed anyway? You don't have to be proficient in lip reading to know what players like Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and John Terry have been saying to refs for years and getting away with it. And managers have openly encouraged it by not backing the refs after the game. It is a known tactic to intimidate the refs. Agree that it is about time it was stopped!

The FA need to back up the refs on this. The refs also need to go hard with it and not worry if there are games ending 9 a side. This really needs to happen and there is no way to "phase it in".
Get your bets on for reds and yellows....
