Yes I went last night but I don't want this to turn into another arguement about U23's etc. I would have gone if it was a reserve fixture because I'm concerned about the squad and wanted to see how players who haven't been starting regularly performed.
Unfortunately I'm even more concerned now than I was before. We have a number of players that are no where near the level they reached last season and Marcus Stewert said as much in his post match interview.
After a promising debut at Swindon, Roos looked shakey in goal last night and made a number poor decisions.
I don't think either full back has had a great start to the season. They're both getting caught out defensively and not getting forward as much.
Centre back is a serious concern for me. With the exception of Lockyer we lack pace and last night Clarke and McChrystal were given the run around. It was frightening to see how easily they went past McChrystal, he was left for dead on a number of occasions.
I think we all agree we lack quality in the centre of midfield. Only Lines looks comfortable on the ball which is a serious problem that needs to be addressed with a new signing today. I can't see Mansell or Lawrence playing much at all this season, the latter went off injured again last night after about 30 mins.
Monty had one good game but has done nothing in his other appearances and Bodin looks a shadow of the player that looked so good in L2. Both were subbed at HT last night after a shocking 45 mins. On this seasons performances they'd struggle to get a place in Chipping Sodburys starting 11.
Another player that's way below the required level is Gaffney. He's nothing like the player we had on loan last Christmas. The way he's playing it's hard to see him scoring at all this season. He looks clueless and completely bereft of confidence.
As for Luke James, he wasn't even given a run out last night so maybe Clarke has already realised there's a reason he's only scored 2 goals in 70 games.
There are positives too. Hopefully Roos will prove to be decent between the sticks, Lockyer as expected looks solid, Hartley has done pretty well despite not being the quickest, Lines has really stepped up , Taylor looks sharp and both Easter and Harrison have improved.
I know we'll have to settle for 1 or 2 signings today based on Clarke's comments but personally I'd have liked a CB, CM & a winger. Whatever signings he makes they need to improve our starting 11 and not just be bench warmers.

What surprised me last night was we did not see our new full back either on the pitch or on the bench...
Is he injured or just not fit..
He played Lawrence last night and he clearly was not fit from the 1st minute when he could not turn and chase a ball...

Maybe two very successful but tiring, stressful seasons are catching up with some. Some are getting no younger & it was always optimistic to think they'd all make the step up to L1. But shouldn't we give DC a little time to asses this? & honour his promise to give them a chance? Or is that too reasonable?

I don't blame them for playing sh** in a sh** competition that holds no value to anyone. I wouldn't read to much into last nights performance as the players will know that this is a joke of a tournament as they are seasoned pros playing against little kids which I find hugely disrespectful.

I am not going on last night's game, I mean I wasn't there but I think some players have just reached a level now that they can't perform at and we are becoming desperate for some genuinely quality midfielders.
The team we have, they try hard and can't knock them for that for one second but gets to a point that you have to admit and hopefully dc can see it that some players aren't good enough for league 1 and you could say or even against a championship reserve team.

Wow only a week ago we were applauding the squad and how great they looked against Chelsea. Seems a few have short memories.
We lost to Chesham last year but that didn't require us to go out and buy 4 new players.
We don't need a centre back, Lockyer and Hartley look solid and Clarke has had a good start to the season. McChrystal is a decent 4th choice.
Byron Moore has still to come into the picture and we all know the quality Bodin possesses - he's just not hit former yet. Montano likewise will grow into the season as he did last imo.
Harrison, Easter and Taylor all look in fantastic nick. Gaffney less so and James not done much yet but 3 out of 5 is as good as we've ever had under DC.
Midfield Lines is a revelation and like a new signing. Clarke and Sincs are doing ok and we can't judge Lawrence until/if he's fit and likewise Mansell. We do need a new signing here though I agree.
Let's look at the bigger picture here, we've played 7 and a half matches, done as expected in the league, overperformed in the league cup and under achieved in one game in the joke cup.
Let's get real guys, a bit of perspective is needed. DC will sort any problems we have.

Agree re keeper, its early days but DC seems to have a weak spot when it comes to keeper's I also dont think Lockyer has shown his real quality yet this season, maybe the captains armband is weighing a bit heavy and maybe it should be given to Hartley. The biggest disappointment this season seems to be Billy Bodin closely followed by Gaffney and Leadbitter all three of whom I expected to kick on this year. I dont know whether Lawrence was injured last night,he so slow and ponderous its difficult to tell but he must be DCs biggest mistake yet,he's been a total failure and i'm sure he's on decent money. Oh and what has happened to Byron Moore? On the plus side Harrison has been a revelation, Matty just gets better and better and Lines is showing the sort of form and quality we all knew he has. The crux of the matter is that too many players are under performing, yes we need a quality ball-winning midfielder but imho the squad is far better that its showing at the moment and its the managements job to sort it,luckily theres a ten day break to do just that

Personally I don't think either Clarke or McChrystal are good enough to play as CB in a back 4. McChrystal was a liability last night. We've no idea how long Moore will be out or how good he is. Vale fans didn't rate him. There is no guarantee Bodin & Montano will come good. With the exception of one decent game for Monty they've both been very poor. We will surrender possession and put ourselves under pressure unless we sign more midfielders who are comfortable on the ball. If Taylor got injured we'd struggle for goals up front in my opinion. I can't see any of our other strikers getting 10+ personally. Some of these problems may not materialise. Hopefully Lockyer and Hartley can stay fit and J.Clarke can play in a back 3. If Taylor stays fit I think we'll be okay for goals if he's partnered by Harrison or Easter. So I guess the most important improvements have to be in midfield and hopefully we'll see that addressed with a signing or 2 today.

I can't really understand DC's obsession with getting in loanee keepers from Div 1 clubs who can't come cheap, as if he's only got limited funds I'd sooner that money was spent on a decent CM rther than DC keep looking for a goalie who apparently needs to brilliant with the ball as his feet.
It's also a bit of a mystery what's happened to Bodin, Gaffney's & Leadbitter's form, surely all three can't have just gone off the boil at the same time?
Let's hope we sign a decent CM this afternoon or it will be a struggle until Mansell returns to full fitness, assuming he will this season. Finally I can;t understand why James wasn't given a full game last night, he's turning into another Alex Henshall!

Just my opinion, but too many are getting on their high horse over our involvement in this tournament. I went and I have already explained my reasons for going in another thread, I am also going to pay to go to swindle again as is my right as an individual. Do not try to foist your opinions on me and other FANS who have differing opinions to yourselves, if the cap fits wear it. UTG

Perhaps this, like our early cup losses in previous seasons, will give our squad the kick up the arse needed to really kick on in league one. The worry is however that we may not have the quality in the squad to do this and after tonight no opportunity to bring in new faces.

I'm sure a few people mentioned after the Scunthorpe game we needed a few quality players in. Struggling to remember how that thread developed......

So I guess the most important improvements have to be in midfield and hopefully we'll see that addressed with a signing or 2 today. I do get where you're coming from but as a newly promoted side we've done alright. You've watched all 7 (8 including swindle) games this season and surely you must agree that we played good stuff in 4 of those matches? By all accounts we were decent against scunthorpe in the most part and Southend we should've won. Only really Bolton Swindle and last night to have many gripes about? I think as a whole we're doing ok, not spectacularly but we're finding our feet and have had 8 games in a month! I'm sure nowe with a bit of a rest DC and the coaching staff will get things back in order after two lacklustre displays. The thing is with a squad is that, unless you're firing on all cylinders at the top of the league like we've been fortunate enough to be the last two seasons, then some players will be underperforming. It's not rocket science to realise that of 20+ players, 4 or 5 minimum won't be setting the world alight. People are talking as if they just expect players to be able to step up right away and start the season in 5th gear and never look back. I think people need to chill a bit, take a step back and realise that improvements are needed but I not nearly by the extent people are suggesting. This isn't purely aimed at you by the way gasattack. I think Clarke is good enough, 2 of the 3 wingers will come good, Easter and Harrison could both score 10+ but I guess that's the beauty of an opinion! Midfielder needed though, fully agree there.

Can I complement you though on your use of the word "foist" I would of used impose.
