Living in the posh part of 'artcliffe, like wot I do, my mates and I used the Baccy Jar as our local back in the 70s. Many city players used to live in Whitchurch and used the Baccy as well. One night, my mate was putting some music on the juke box when Gerry Gow asked him if he could choose one: My mate told him he could, as long as it was Goodnight Irene He was a hard and skilful player: It was no surprise that he left Ashton Gate when they got relegated, to continue playing at the top level with Man City, as his talents were well worthy of that. I am sure he fought the disease as hard as he played his game. For him to pass away at 64 is very sad. Anywhere near Borver Grove? & did you use The Baccy Jar when Trevor Jacobs ran it? No, I am t'other end to Borver Grove, near 'artcliffe Park Farm. Yes, I used the pub when Trev ran it. His nickname for me was, "Rovers" He was a great landlord. Unfortunately the pub went into decline once he left Another player who succumbed to that hateful disease.

Really appreciate the comments on this thread, I was lucky enough to spend some time with Gerry, a top bloke and a great player who never gave less than everything he had, every game.
Really devastated today, and it's great to see that at times like this the real and proper Bristol football fans put the rivalry aside and show genuine dignity and class....

A fantastic all out energy player and goes down as one of the greats to play his football in Bristol.
Condolences to Gerry's family at this sad time.

Nah, despite our combined efforts the pub could not turn a profit, so it just became a revolving door for failed managers. Even your helium voiced karaoke attempts failed to attract the masses

Sad to hear that this true City legend has been taken far too soon. Condolences to all who knew and appreciated him.

Sad news. Remember him well. Love those matches at Eastville and Ashton. Great rivalry, fun and memories. Rip and best wishes to his family and friends. Goodnight Irene.
