One of the worst managers we have ever had, he made a lot of money out of us for the short amount of time he wae here. We played a friendly with city, he put together a make shift team with a loaned goalkeeper from Swindon and we had one of the poorest teams I had ever seen wear the GAS shirts! Kenneth, Patterson just 2 mates/players he signed for the gravy train.

He wasn't in his first season, he probably have just lost interest when he realised how poor the club was run, DC was possibly different as he knew he couldn't risk being sacked in his first job. That's probably it. McGhee was useless but he had a good reputation forged at other clubs. We were probably a basket case for most of 2000s in the way we were run. He could afford to go and still keep his reputation but DC was on the way up he was needing to succeed to make his reputation. Whatever it's worked out well for us. UTG! It staggers me but all DC did was sign young or hungry players instead of has-been crocked over-the-hill wrecks looking to squeeze a few more quid out of the game. It's worked before for Rovers & always will.

Why? Any particular reason? I can think of lots but I'm not ITK. So why is he so hated? I lived in Wolverhampton when he was manager there and when I could not get to see the gas went to see the wolves he ruined them and then he ruined us and he is a jock what more reasons do you want
Hey, don't disagree, was just asking! A manager didn't do well at two clubs. Not that unusual but why does that make him one of the most hated men in football? Can see why he's unpopular in Wolverhampton and north Bristol but why "most hated"? UTG!

Let's face it the Scotland job did not happen overnight , in my view he knew months before that Gordon strachan had promised him the job , he just went through the motions with us Very poor as if we weren't in enough sh** already, best he stays up north

Without Caryol we would have gone down I always thought Carayol's move to Middlesborough was suspect as his mate Strachan was the manager and next thing you know Strachan takes Mcghee to Scotland with him.

Virgo upfront against Northampton springs to mind.

But somebody was sanctioning those signings after Buckle had already signed the likes of Virgo, not saying DC would sign that type of player but if he tried to he'd have to convince Will Dubey then SH & Wael they were decent signings.

I always find it hard to compare McGhee and Buckle. Buckle on the outside was way more of a lady garden but I don't think he failed for lack of trying, some of his signings weren't so bad or were at least logical at the time. McGhee signed a bunch of overpaid useless pals. Did he make one good signing?! And he didn't seem bothered about the job. I genuinely believe he tried to get himself sacked towards the end.
Can't believe I'm saying this but I think in hindsight, I preferred Buckle out of the two.

McGhee was a complete and utter twat who had a vastly over rated opinion of himself. He said in a newspaper article that when he was told about the job he came to watch us, and because he was worried he'd be recognised he disguised himself by wearing a hat. He said he felt embarrassed that he should be considering a league 2 club.
He went on to say he still felt he had the ability to manage Manchester United, and that he had to start somewhere after having been out of the game!
Mate, just being a Jock doesn't automatically make you Alex Ferguson. I seem to recall he was an abject failure wherever he managed, there's usually a reason why you've been "out of the game" for a while. Hopefully, following his Scotland debacle he'll be out of the game on a permanent basis, and he can concentrate on poisoning customers in his Brighton restaurant. How many ways can you seve Haggis, and mince, tatties and neeps?
And he is unforgivably friggin ugly.
And, I believe, he once played for the Sh it.

He turned Motherwell around last season but they are struggling this year, echoing his career at the Gas. He was very arrogant and not likeable but even allowing for that, it is still almost incomprehensible that the team that won its last two home matches of his first season with us 7-1 and 5-1 could implode so dramatically the following year.
