for me its roos leadbitter lockyer clarke-salter brown sinclair lines colkett boateng gaffney taylor
this means the narrow diamond version of 4-4-2 for me right now this is the strongest team we can put out. what do you lot think? could anyone pick a better team from our squad?

What if you are up against a team are very compact, central playing three mobile CM including one or two who sit deep between the lines?
Your diamond would have their cdm(s) patrol the gap that your tip of the diamond man is looking to exploit and the 3 in midfield can quite easily dominate that huge gap in the middle. We don't own a DMF, a true one, who is good enough to do all the midfield defending.
If we were up against a flat 442 then this could be effective, even a 433.....I don't really believe we have a best formation. That said, 442 or variations of it tend to be how we score our goals.

It's hard to name our best team when some players (ie Montano, James, Moore, JCS) don't get any real run in the first team.
Many would say that DC knows his players better than anyone, but I think Montano especially has deserved a starting place more than most as long as the formation allows for an out-and-out winger. Then you have value as an impact sub.
I would like to think we study the opposition well enough to pinpoint their weaknesses and try to exploit that, while at the same time using our own strengths effectively.

Each game is different as there's no way I'd start with that line up tomorrow night as we need Monty to start to give us some width/pace upfront.

I would agree with this. Would be nice to attack them with purpose from the first whistle and go a couple of goals ahead early for once, especially after the last game.

It's the old 'problem' of do we worry about the opposition or do we let them worry about us!

I agree that they're probably our best 11 players but results don't lie and we're so much more successful with wingers its rediculous. I really like it when we start with the diamond and then release the wingers around the hour mark. That seems to work really well. Montano needs to either start or play 20-30 minutes every game he's quality and B -Moore will get better with more game time too. It's so good that we've got so many options and I think we'll pushing for the top 2 positions going in to the new year.

Don't forget we will have Jake Gosling available from January as playmaker

...............Roos.............. Leads...Locks...Harts...Browns... ..............Sincs............. ........Lines......Boats......... ..............Colks............. ..............Matty.............
I've only picked 10 players, coz having an eleventh man has no bearing on results, apparently.

It's bloody hard to figure it out. I subscribe to the view that we are better with wingers, and I would like to see Byron Moore and Cristian Montaño in the side, but then if we do that we can't accommodate Colkett unless we go with just Taylor up front. I'm not sure that's Taylor's game so something has to give. I expect to see DC continuing to change formations, and with the players we have, I think it's probably the right thing to do.

its a bit weird having 3 decent wingers ie bodin, montano and moore and 3 play maker type centre midfielders!lines, colkett and boateng so i understand the dilemma. the diamond 4 is quite new for dc and seems to have replaced the 3-5-2 option so its difficult to compare results v other formations but i would like to see us stick with for a run of games. we wont of course ha

Why would you like to see us stick with the diamond, for entertainment it's our most boring formation? Our next 3 games are against teams who are all down on confidence, why don't we take the game to them from the first whistle rather than wait an hour for them to settle into the game before bringing on Monty etc? .

The best team is the one that DC never picks Regarding Monty I think he could play in the middle, in place of Harrison or Taylor if they were injured / suspended

I think Shankly and Revie had the same approach.

Yeah I reckon if we went good old 4-4-2 with wingers we would win at least two of our next three games maybe all three. I doubt we will though .

I think Shankly and Revie had the same approach. They were operating in a world which would make league 2 look like the champions league. If is fundamentally unprofessional not to study opponents. Any manager not doing this in the current age is not don g his job. So there!!

You make a fair point, but most fans of teams which have experienced success at some time can reel off the team without pausing for breath. Now here's a heretical/devil's advocate point of view.............perhaps we score so many late goals because DC doesn't start matches with the right team, but then sees the errors of his ways and makes astute substitutions !!
