......defeat at home.
The worst defeat was 0-7 on 15/11/1958 against Grimsby, followed by 1-6 on 21/0/1948 against Ipswich and then tonight's game and also three further defeats 1-5 on 03/11/1992, against Barnsley, on 19/03/2008 against WBA and on 13/04/2010 against Southampton.
It is the worst defeat I have seen at home.

I saw the Soton and WBA games - in those we were clearly out-classed this one was slightly freaky.

I missed off the 1-5 on 27/12/1976 against Wolves.
The two worst defeats were before I started watching BRFC but I have witnessed 4 of the 5 defeats 1-5, only managing to avoid the Barnsley game.

How can you forget that game, David Williams goal was a screamer and Steve Kindon was amazing.

Took the lead with a fortunate deflection & simply took their chances early on whereas we didn't. Obviously they ran away with it as things fell their way in the later stages. I'd hold the attack just as culpable. There was one period of sustained pressure at,I think, 2 nil. Had we scored then...,.

The Wolves game in front of 20660 I think. Watched the game stood on a bench at the back of an entrance to the north enclosure. The one and only time I've left a rovers game early and missed David Williams' goal

First half we were quite poor but still created lots of very good chances and didn't score with any of them. They had three and scored two. I thought at half time that we didn't need to change much, probably bodin for Moore who was having another mare but other than that I fancied us to still get something from the game. Major formation and 3 sub changes early on again (wtf) and we were over the ropes and very unorganised. We got away with making 3 changes early on Saturday but it's a massive risk and sure enough we found ourselves down to 10 men for pretty much half the game. Loads of defensive errors and loads of management errors too I'm afraid. That kid who ran riot was clearly their best player from the early stages and DC should have pullled Locks or Sinclair or someone to one side and told them " follow that bastard everywhere don't let him breathe " but no every time he got the ball on the edge of our box he had so much time it was ridiculous. Maybe DC did and that player just couldn't handle him I don't know but f**k me that was a shambles in the second half. Determination wise I thought we were first class , nobody stopped trying including the crowd , not many clubs supporters sing their hearts out at 4-0 down but we did but in terms of defensive organisation we were a complete shambles and not much better going forward. We looked like a side with formation overload , nobody knew what they were doing and try as they did with the determination that they have it was a mess. I really think we've missed mansell this season. He is a player who is a natural captain , will sit in front of the back four and keep the shape and organise people. I thought as many did that maybe boateng would be that player but he's clearly not and I think if we can get another mansell type player we can push on and still make the top 6. Looking at our midfield we've got Lines Boateng Colket Easter - -all playmakers / attacking
Sinclair Clarke --- tear around the pitch picking up the pieces players.
We haven't got a holding midfielder who will sit in front of the back four and cover the gaps that the likes of lines and boateng leave when they run or in boatengs case charge through, or when Sinclair is tearing around picking up the pieces.
If we only sign one player this January that's what we need the most.
If we sign more than one then I'd like to see another winger and another strong target man who has also scored goals at league 1 or above level.
It's been a sh**e night but our season is by no means over and with the right signings in January I still fancy us to be challenging st the right end of the table come may and I also trust DC to get it right what he's achieved over the last 2 and a half seasons is incredible and he and the team deserved their support at the end of the game. One terrible result doesn't make a bad team but we need to go back to basics and we need other goal scoring options because if the opposition mark Taylor out of the game we are very limited in our attacking / goal scoring options. Billy bodin was that other player who could do that last season and I think DC should give him a run of four or five games to prove himself and get his form back. If it fails then loan him out or sell him but giving him a game every 5 or 6 games isn't going to get the best out of one of our best technically gifted players. He was outstanding in league 2 last season he needs a run.

I won't copy your post Socrates as it's long. I agree with it but felt Charlton were a shade fortunate to go in 2 up. OK, the second half became a shambles. I also feel blaming the defence ignores our goal scoring - or lack of it. Only MT has got that many & he's still hardly prolific. However - roll on Saturday. We had debacles in the Conference & L2 but still went on to success.

I've seen all the games listed but the 0-7 defeat by Grimsby was the season before 14/12/57,strangely enough it wasnt as one sided as the score suggests but our defence was shocking (well no change there then!). The game v Grimsby on 15/11/58 was sweet revenge as we beat the Fish 7-3! Edit no I didnt see the Ipswich game, even I am not that old!!

If so many saw the Wolves game then some of the replies clearly show there are a lot more old "fogeys", like me, on this forum.

I spoke to Steve Atkinson about that performance a few years ago and he couldn't remember it. Just goes to show what a special talent he was if he couldn't single out what was an amazing performance. To think he played rugby league until he was 15 and had never played football until then.

But we all continue to turn up season after season in the hope, like recently, that our fortunes will look up.

Mansell??
It begs the question why did DC bring in Boatend & Colkett when he probably knew LM & LL were likely to be past it and we lacked an obvious replacement for the former, even though for the previous two seasons he played a major part in our end of season promotions pushes.

I was also at the Wolves game. Only 16 then and had to walk from Downend to game. When I got to Fishponds I twisted my ankle and had to hobble the rest of the way there only to see us lose heavily. I would also have been at the other games. didn't we lose badly to Swindon at home just before Terry Cooper got sacked?
