Surely the loan system is part of the same problem at the heart of the Checkatrade Trophy debacle. The transfer window was essentially a response to a problem with big club spending - but the lower divisions have to suffer it too. As a result short term loans, as has been pointed out, are a way to insure against squad depletion (for small clubs). But they are a solution to bloated squads with players needing game time for super rich Prem clubs.
So basically it seems like a system working at cross purposes. I'm not that happy with a relationship with Chelsea anyway. Despite their obscene wealth we still had to take them to court for compensation on Scott Sinclair.
The whole league system is a monied mess and that's certainly not DC's fault.

Can't say I agree with this. Colkett barely played anyway so its not as if he really needs replacing. We had too many midfielders a couple of weeks ago so we are probably just getting it down to the right level now. I don't think any more than four is really necessary. If Mansell isn't in DC's plans then he will need replacing. Otherwise, I don't think we'll sign a replacement for Colkett just to be sat on the bench or in the stands again, any player we sign should improve the first XI. So same situation as before really, just with one less unhappy squad member sat in the stands. Only thing that worries me is that there is no other creative midfielder to replace Lines should he get injured. UTG! I am disagree with regard to getting down to right number of CMS. We have lost two young exciting player. instead we are now selecting guys to start who are closer to retirement. What concerns me that DC has said he wants to build a squad to challenge eventually for the championship. there are currently no signs of this happening or are we going to sign 11 new players in the summer. Surely it would be better to start to bring players in now. But my point is that we aren't going to have to select them now because Colkett has gone back to Chelsea. He was here last week and still didn't get a game over them so why do we need him sat in the stands? DC obviously didn't think he was a better option than any of the midfielders to start at Charlton. I am saying anyone we get in will have to be higher thought of by DC than Colkett was and challenge for the first team, otherwise there is no point in signing them. UTG!

They're probably unhappy with his lack of game time recently. Not really surprised and DC can't just play him to keep his parent club happy. Some important goals and contributions from his short time here though. Good luck to the lad! As well as Chelsea not being happy about his game time, would think the young lad was as well. No doubt in my mind the lad asked Chelsea to recall him, just as I would have done in his shoes. Still DC knows best as we keep getting told on here. I will reserve judgement on that until the end of the transfer window.

I'd forgotten all about Luke. That tells it own story. I think Luke James is entirely different , DC IMO sees him as having a chance to win a permanent contract with us as opposed to the others who were always going to go back James fits the DC criteria if hes good enough. Problem is he isn't good enough.

Oh my goodness. People saying he isn't good enough really need to open their eyes and actually look at our squad - particularly the middle four who started on Saturday. Wow! Unless you're being sarcastic you appear to be directing criticism at existing Bristol Rovers players which is something you're very quick to pull up other posters about. It might also be taken as a criticism of DC. If you're not being sarcastic then for once I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Problem is he isn't good enough. James has certainly not shown anything in his limited game time to convince me he is any good.Got to be better out there. Another waste of a loan signing as far as I am concerned.

If Chelsea recalled CC because DC didn't play him enough, then good riddance. Simple as that. There's no way we can let them dictate what team DC picks.
I really liked him and rated him and he will be a very decent player. But we just can't let outside influences affect our team selection. That would be mad.

Is it possible that DC has someone in mind for the January window and let both Colkett and Chelsea know he would be dropping further down the pecking order? If so maybe both clubs and the player decided it would be better for him to return to Chelsea to find other options and to free up wages (assuming we contribute to CC) for the incoming player.

Our squad is so lacking in quality in depth it slaps you in the face every time you see the line up. We seem to be losing players fast, hopefully this isn't used as an excuse for not shipping certain players and bringing the right players in. Regards to DC picking the midfield for Charlton, anybody who thought he picked side seriously thinking wed get something out of it, well don't know what to say.

Regards to DC picking the midfield for Charlton, anybody who thought he picked side seriously thinking wed get something out of it, well don't know what to say. Thing is, he picked a side that loads of people liked and were enthusiastic about for the Charlton home game (go and read the Charlton (H) thread) and that side lost 5-1. Yet, no one uses that result to declare how they were wrong about team selection, or about how games can just go wrong, or about how they don't know what they're doing, or about how those players are not good enough, etc. This whole, 'the team lost therefore anything I say about the game or any criticism I make can be proved correct just by quoting the result' is dodgy logic and very selective.

Really, DC should have played him, IMO CC is the most gifted youngster to have played for the Gas since Gary Mabbutt. Chelsea let two of their capped England players come to rovers to get game time; one broke his arm and both spent far too much time on the bench, I do not blame Chelsea for recalling CC. At Charlton we had a midfield of fatty lawrence and a unfit Manse, an out of his depth Sinclair, with poor old Tom out of form and needing a rest and unsurprisingly lost 4-1.

This will be a true test of DC ability in the transfer window to replace this quality with another "seasoned" player.... I won't hold my breath You say quality but do you honestly think that if he was true quality that DC wouldn't be playing him every week or at least a lot more than he did, and as someone else said he's played 15 times, for a young kid with no previous experience what do you expect? a starting place every week? As for your dig at DC, 'I won't hold my breath' really? is that in any way necessary, has he not made any signings that you've been happy with? I honestly think some 'fans' would rather he fails just so they can say I told you so, he can't sign anyone he doesn't know/isn't from Salisbury. These extra loan players were obviously brought in because of the nonsense new loan rules, and if it means that we get less loans in now as these clubs won't let their players come here then so be it, never really been a big fan of loan players anyway, they're never gonna have the same feel and passion/connection with the fans as someone who is contracted to the club. Ok if DC had to replace him with a similar proven player with his skills, how much would that cost. Remember Everton are about to pay £10m + for a very similar player both in age and Quality.... SO i don't have any faith in DC replacing him with a proven player of his quality, Hence i will not hold my breath.

I think what you'll find I'm doing is recognising the strengths of the player where others have deliberately ignored them, which is entirely consistent with my general criticism of people writing off young players who have good attributes and real skill just because they are young.

Both Charlton games were very similar in one respect- Charlton at the Mem created probably seven chances and converted five and the other two chances were sitters missed,on Saturday at Charlton they had probably six chances-converted four and hit the bar twice. In the game at the Mem we were killed off by a second goal AGAINST the run of play on half time and DC changed the team and made all three substitutions very early in the second half taking off both wingers as I recall at half time and thereby changing the formation and then he was "bit on the bum" when he made the third substitution and pretty well lost Clarke-Salter straight afterwards and then the game was over. On Saturday the team was completely wrong and for me in both games DC got his substitutions completely wrong because in both games the route cause of the defeats was the defence yet DC changed other areas of the team.
Far too often the wingers get the blame for poor performances and are then replace by players who give us no width at all. Sorry but whilst I trust DC entirely for getting generally success I neither have faith in the signings he makes or his team selection. His downfall and his success is down to taking each individual game as a project which means generally selection is very unsteady and very few players get the chance to "build" their form hence we see very little in the way of consistency from players- for at least half of the team and three quarters of the squad it is a case of come on and play brilliantly or you are out next game or substituted at half time or soon after. The unfair part of this is that some players have an unfair advantage because they can have bad games and still play every game - Lee Brown and Tom Lockyer are examples of this.
This game is very much a results game and so DC has a great record and therefore we are sure to see the present methods continued and can't really complain because we all want success. I am not so convinced about this brilliant team spirit within the squad abnd I think how players are returning to their clubs shows this. Whatever people say NOBODY can be happy or should they be if they are not playing and even more so if they see certain players playing poorly and continually being selected in front of them.

DC says he understand Chelsea recalling him and feels as though Colkett's form has dropped off lately but he is surely he would have played more games between now and the end of the season. DC is sure Colkett will become a really good player but needs to improve the defensive part of his game.
