In an ideal world I guess we'd have two free scoring strikers. The question I'd want to ask is what is Gaffers/Ellis main role - is it to score or to create the gaps and opportunities for Taylor. Going back in time Devon scored goals but his main job was often setting up first Penrice and then Saunders which he did well. The one thing that team had was goals from the midfield - Boris, Ollie etc. all chipped in with a few. Only Bodin seems to do this in our current team which leaves us too reliant on Matty.

That promotion team was a bit freakish because our top scorer by some way was our right midfielder, who used to ghost in to the box late to pick up the scraps from balls usually won by Devon. I think Devon weighed in with about 10 goals himself that year, though, which was quite significant. Saunders arrived after Christmas if my memory serves me correctly. I think we managed with the likes of Paul Nixon and Tony Sealy up front prior to his arrival, and neither of them were particularly prolific either.

In fact I believe you could argue that every position needs strengthening bar Up front. We need a new keeper (Roos and Puddy not good enough, Mildy injured) New CB or maybe 2 with Hartley injured, Lockyer been too inconsistent so need more options. Full back to cover Leadbitter/Brown. Midfield as Boateng and Colkett gone and Sinclair, Mansell and Lawrence not good enough. Wings - Bodin and Montano decent but only Moore as back up, maybe another. Do you honestly feel Gaffers/Ellis & Easter are good enough for us to make a promotion challenge? Where would the goals come from if MT left or was ever out injured for any length of time? Have those 3 even scored 10 goals between them? Nobody ever gets on the end of any of the crosses into the box, bar Hartley, so signing even more signers seems pointless. IF my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle! I honestly think Taylor, Gaffney, Ellis, Easter, James and Bodin are more than adequate as a strike force in this league and that up front is where we have the most strength in depth.

That's far too simplistic an argument. You can't assume that a team's goals during a season, without player x, would equal total goals minus player x goals. Someone else would be playing in the team instead of player x, and getting into positions that player x would have got into, at least some of the time. Neither Gaffney, Easter or Ellis have player as many minutes as taylor, nor have they been playing in his exact position.

It's almost like you think we should have another Matty Taylor on the bench Topper. Which yes in an ideal world we would do but that is simply not realistic. Any team at any level is going to miss their best player as they are not going to have as good a replacement on the bench.

At least £1m probably more He's out of contract in the Summer. If they were asking for that much this month then that's one that I would definitely rather DC waited til the Summer to bring in. UTG! Didn't realise he was out of contract but will have bigger and better clubs than us available for him.

Could really push on if we had someone else scoring regularly next to Mattee

Could really push on if we had someone else scoring regularly next to Mattee I beg to differ. Gaffney has been good enough for me and Ellis has been inconsistent but is worth pursuing as some games like today and against Chelsea he has been unplayable.

Today showed up how poor Gaffney is as a finisher compare to Harrison, my money is on him being released in the summer, unless he managed to get a 2.5 years contract out of us last January?

Harrison needs to keep this up though. He's been. good of late and great today, got to be Consistent over longer period for me still. Certainly given DC something to think about though

A striker is there to do one thing, score goals. Gaffney runs around a hell of a lot(is he told to do this?) Would Taylor have scored as many goals with out Gaffney doing all of the donkey work? With out Gaffney today Taylor didn't get a sniff of a goal. I'm just glad DC manages to get the best out of them all.

Have Northampton actually signed Miller from Dover or is it just a rumour at this stage?

Bodin is like a fresh signing at the moment. Great to know he's back in form. His goal today was as good as they come. Gutted I wasn't there to see it in person. UTG
