Bristol Rovers have enjoyed a great year back in League One. Successive promotions have seen the Gas rise from the depths of The National League to the verge of the League One play-off spots, and the Bristol club will only just miss out on the end of season shoot out. The club have been pushing for a top six spot all season, and their form in the league convinced Stoke defender, Ryan Sweeney, to join the club on loan until the end of the season. London born, but an Irish Under-21 international, Sweeney signed for Stoke last summer in a deal from AFC Wimbledon, and the player has impressed during his 16 games in the South West. Only 20 years of age, Sweeney has been playing above his years in the tough environment of the English third division, but has more than held his own at a very competitive level. The youngster is held in extremely high regard by those at Stoke City, and fans have been closely following the progression of Sweeney at Bristol Rovers. So much in fact, that there have been whisperings that the player should be elevated to the first team squad next season. Mark Hughes will be more aware than any as to Sweeney’s potential, and the Stoke City manager should retain the player for next year’s Premier League campaign. The youngster would offer a fantastic back up option to the starting defensive pair of Ryan Shawcross and Bruno Martins Indi. With Shawcross being linked with a potential move away from the club, Hughes may feel that he has no need to delve into the over inflated transfer market. Sweeney has a lot of potential, and should without a doubt be in Mark Hughes’ squad next season. footballleagueworld.co.uk/why-this-league-one-loan-star-could-be-in-the-stoke-city-squad-next-season/

If we don't sign him then clearly our board lack ambition and are almost certain to sell the club in the close season.

Great for the guy to be rated so highly but probably bad news for us! Well deserved though as he has been excellent since January and I wish him well. Although a shame, if true, on the other hand Mark Hughes and other PL managers will look at us and DC and think that their younger players will get looked after and will play regularly if they come to us and are good enough. I'm sure others will point out other loanees who haven't played so regularly but I guess perhaps they weren't as good as Ryan S. Again, if true, DC will be able to use it to persuade other good youngsters to come to us, " see what can happen if you play well." So perhaps a shame but every cloud has a silver lining perhaps! UTG!

Don't fret we still have Hartley and Burn waiting in the wings Don't know what Burn is like but despite Hartley's goals I'm not excited about a Locker/ Hartley pairing again next season. DC says he knows what's needed so guess it's wait and see who he goes for in the market and the budget he has to capture his first choice.

If we can't get him back we definitely need another to replace him. Hartley is not good enough. Yes, he is our only goal scoring defender, but it is there for all to see that our defense improved massively after he got injured. Burn is an unknown. He could be brilliant, but then we still need another as backup.

He was signed on the back of a very good season at Plymouth were he was part of a defense that shipped very few goals. Sweeney has been immense and is undoubtedly a huge part of the reason that our defence has been so much better since January, but the Lumley factor isn't to be underestimated and I think that a player like Hartley would benefit massively from playing in front of a commanding, vocal, authorative 'keeper like Joe. The entire defence was all over the place with Roos in goal - Lockyer has looked infinitely better playing with Lumley behind him and I definitely think we'd see a much more assured Hartley as well. His goals are definitely not to be sniffed at.

Not sure the guy who wrote the article has watched him or indeed it may be his agent. At our level, Sweeney is quality. However, I don't think he would make it in the Premiership due to only one reason. Lack of pace. That said, I would love it if he oversees our rise to the championship next season.

The 'lack of pace' is an interesting thought. Like him or not, John Terry has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League, despite his 'lack of pace'. He overcame this by using his head, and not getting into situations where his 'lack of pace' could catch him out. You can still play at the highest level with a 'lack of pace'. If Stoke won't sell, or we cannot afford him, then we must make every effort to get him back for another season on loan.

Yep, played well in the 3rd tier of English football so definitely time to throw him in to the premiership. Obvious conclusion. Solid article.

After 23 games 33 points so not such a big difference with Sweeney.

His goals are definitely not to be sniffed at. Lockyer was all over the place at Coventry when Sweeney was away on international duty, you sense Locks like the CB roles alongside a dominate CH like Sweeney, if we can't get him back then DC has got to go out and find a similar type of player. You sense Hartley will have to be resigned to a place on the bench if DC does sign another CH but if he's not happy to accept that then he needs to find himself another club, perhaps Plymuff will have him back, unless they've already signed a better CH......

There is very little chance he will be featuring in Stoke's Premier League team next season but there is probably very little chance he will be playing in League 1 also. I would imagine that Stoke would want to see if he's up to championship football next season, let's hope it is not for the sh**!

Sweeney has been superb for us, but I personally don't think he'll ever play in premier league. I think he'd be a good championship player, hopefully with us🤞

Stoke fans are switched on about him, at least the one I meet last week is, he imitated the conversation on Sweeney and his first question was is he up to premier league as they feel they need strengthening in that department.

None of us really have a clue what Stoke intend doing with him next season so to say he's very little chance of playing for us is just to total cr@p.

Ok Topper take your blue tints off and put yourself in the shoes of Mark Hughes having just tested a recent acquisition at League 1 level which he has passed with flying colours. If you were Mark Hughes or one of his trusted staff and you want to test his ability further, what would you want to do next?
