Well with our budget only just being decided and 10 or 11 players to come in assuming the other three who haven't signed yet,do it is interesting to see that Bury have already signed three players and two are players I would have loved to seen come to us- Jermaine Beckford and Stephen Dawson (from Scunthorpe). Of course Northern clubs have a huge advantage with so many more clubs at our level around them but the truth is we probably don't have the financial clout to get players from even say Exeter. Both those players would have been of the sort of quality that a side aiming for the Championship should be signing. I await with interest who our first signings will be but hope that we see some action in this direction soon as in my opinion the "late" signings are generally going to be ones who use us as a last resort rather than us being top of their list.
The trouble we have is that if you want a player who has a good goalscoring record then they are going to be a) expensive or 2) have a lot of clubs interested in them.and this is true whether you are going for a striker or a goalscoring midfielder or winger. It may be a case of getting someone like Beckford who are on their way down but have the chance that by dropping down they are able to find the net regularly again.

Who else was bidding to sign the 3 players that the mighty Bury have signed? How much have Bury spent on the 3 players?

Beckford's main attribute was his pace, which has gone and he has looked shocking the last few seasons. 3 goals in the last few years. Dawson not wanted by Scunthorpe, so there must be a reason and getting on a bit now. Someone said they gave them both 3 year deals as well. If they have that's shocking and asking for trouble. We used to be like that, glad we have changed for the better. Think they will struggle over the next few seasons like that.

I agree, we are USUALLY slow out of the blocks every season, we wait and wait until July and then pick up frees and loans.
Obviously things have changed in recent years, we now have owners with more money supposedly, though they don't seem to be keen to spend quickly and capitalise one the wave of success we've had/still surfing. If we are trying convince UWE to sell us the land, i'm sure they would rather have the ground of a championship club sat on their doorstep than one of a league 1 club.
With season only finished a couple weeks ago, I can understand why we haven't made signings just yet, but as weeks go by I think it will not just be myself that will be frustrated if fail to make any ambitious signings which echo the clubs "target" of being a championship club.

But he's 33 and not the player he used to be. Would have been disappointed if we signed him.

Not strictly true, he was offered a contract by Scunthorpe, I would imagine the comfort of a 3 year deal was a major swing.

So, I've answered my own questions. All 3 players were without contracts with 2 of them being released. Beckford scored 1 goal in 18 last season. All 3 players are in their 30s.
If we signed 3 players like that it would prove 1 thing only. The return of the days of offering long contracts to players looking for a final payday, and the abandonment of actually finding talent that is undeveloped.
DC has done ok so far hasn't he?

Downing signings prior them happening is a bit silly in fairness Henbury. We have signed and retained plenty of "average" players who have done remarkably well for us over the last few years. The joy at the new arrivals under Buckle got us where exactly?

So he hasn't done ok? You know like 2 promotions in 3 seasons ok. failed in his choice of players not his coaching ability which is 10 out of 10 Surely it's all part of the same project? Find me a manager who is 10 out of 10 in recruitment anyway. I'm sorry but these arguments are daft imo.
