I think that there is room for both monikers. Official nickname (oxymoron alert) links to the club name (see post on crest thread), our history and has marketing potential for all age ranges. (Pirates are always popular with childrenā¦not sure Robins are!). I see the term Gashead as more of a supporters reference and relates to urban history rather than a club/team descriptor. (NB: The gas reference is a bit more difficult to take beyond the name in terms of branding/imagery as thereās nothing tangible only a gasometer or gas bottle: sexy, I think not).
Take Spurs for example. Named Spurs after 14th C Sir Henry Percy, better known as āHarry Hotspurā who had land in Tottenham and liked cock fighting, hence the cockerel on the crest. Nickname āthe lilywhitesā because of the white shirts but the supporters refer to themselves as the āY**ā Army, a derogatory term originally hurled as abuse at their Jewish fan base but taken up and embraced as a badge of honour. All those terms coexist and I donāt see Daniel Levy trying to consolidate them and erase the original identity of the club.

I emailed my mockups to Tom Gorringe, got a courteous response within a day that it will be passed onto the team and they will reach out if they needed anything else. Of course they won't need anything else, they're already covered for graphic designers so I don't think they're waiting for a fan to come through and save the day. I at least hoped that they take on board some of the elements though, the need for blue and white quarters on the badge, the inclusion of a pirate instead of just skull and crossbones. Here are mine if anyone's interested: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Lf1x9Bzccek14LiND71aGjXh4uXNKTTf?usp=share_linkPersonally, I like bringing in the black and yellow like the one on my profile pic but I don't think the club will ever go for that as it ties us to black/yellow away colours. I am endorsing option 3 too. I donāt know if you drive a BMW, but it looks like a subliminal reference to their badge with the darker outer ring and blue top left. Preparing the ground for future sponsorship; like it! It also has slight echoes of the St. Pauli rebrand where they have retained the core image but simplified it and framed it within a reinforced circular border. www.behance.net/gallery/92675993/St-Pauli-Rebrand-ConceptJust one more general observation is that some people donāt seem to be making the connection between our club name āRoversā and the nickname āPiratesā, in that a rover is an alternative, albeit antiquated, name for a pirate derived from the old Dutch verb ārovenā, to rob.

Cheltenham the home of NH (no I donāt mean Nick Higgs). Will Cheltenham be for the high jump? Will Rovers be first past the post? Will it be 3 wins on the bounce for the Gas? All will be revealed at 5pm tonight, see you in the winners enclosure. Prediction- Gas to win at a canter 1 - 3 š. COYB! Cheltenham is also the (original) home of Geoff Hurst, Eric Dier, Steve Cotterill, Eddie āThe Eagleā Edwards, Richard OāBrien and Gustav Holst. So itās the Robins who will have a Rocky Horror Show and be the Bringers of Jolity this afternoon. š

Just googled why they are called the pilgrimsā¦ The club takes its nickname, "The Pilgrims", from an English religious group that left Plymouth for the New World in 1620. The club crest features the Mayflower, the ship that carried the pilgrims to Massachusetts. The Well, as we are evoking Chaucer, letās hope that we beat them at a canter, which derives from the āCanterbury Gallopā, a more relaxed speed (3rd gear) that pilgrims rode their horses to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Thomas a Becket.

An alternative theory is that GoA is a carpenter and the birds just long to be close to him. š Jesus was a carpenter so I can understand why you might make that association. Just to clarify because I donāt want to get bogged down in this speculation again, I am NOT the living incarnation of Jesus. Alright, have it Yahweh.
