I fully understand the argument that a manager shouldn’t be judged until he has his own players under him, unfortunately the values he treasures: run a lot, roll your sleeves up, reliability over flair etc, means he’ll be signing exactly the types of players I don’t want to see week in week out in the quarters …the Cotterill Shrewsbury players, the Evans Stevenage players, the Brady Northampton players and the Ainsworth Wycombe type players.
I always buy a season ticket to support the club, for various reasons I find it harder to make games these days, I’ve seen very little from MT to suggest that if he hangs around I’ll be tempted to journey down the M4 much next season even if I’m fit and able to. Hence I vote sack so that I might use the season ticket occasionally!

Was the 4th player Aaron Lescott? Turned out to be the best of the four for us at least. The five players signed in March 2004 were Aaron Lescott, Danny Williams, Bo Henriksen, Ali Gibbs and John Anderson. SourceI thought Williams made the most difference in those few games and was disappointed when unlike Gibbs, Lescott and Anderson he decided not to prolong his stay at the Mem.

Why ignore one of the main issues, the new owners sacked JB as he was apparently underperforming but his replacement is starting to do even worse, we went from a football side under JB to, what appears anyway, to be GC type football under MT even though we don't seem to have players who can play that way. Also whilst the new owners talk about a Mem redevelopment etc there's no signs that's taking place nor how it's going to be funded. First point, it’s not Matt Taylor’s side. He’s trying to get the best out of a very poorly recruited squad. If everything in the garden had been rosy, JB wouldn’t have been sacked. Your second point beggars belief. The owner only made his statement yesterday. You didn’t expect the building work to start today, did you? I thought given 72 posts on here you might be new to gaschat but I see you’ve been a member for six months …that’s more than enough to know Topper posts sense and nonsense in equal measure…just take a pinch of salt (ok half a hundredweight), sigh and move on😉 sorry that was remiss of me as it looks like I’m ‘attacking the poster not the post’ which I’m not….just half of his posts.

Goodnight irene is fine if sung well,Alex Harvey did a good version, but sadly our speed freaks rush through it quicker than the Japanese bullet train. It would be great once a game if sung slowly and all three verses. Sadly not much hope, too busy singing stuff I don't even know the lyrics to these days. Absolutely agree, Alex Harvey's, the SAHB version is tremendous, "gud gud gud Irene" imo this is the version the team should come out onto to the pitch before the game to; it should also be played when the supporters leave the ground. This is a fantastic idea, I was brought up listening to SAHB, AH RIP. Like the SAHB version but another one worth seeking out is by Dr. John. Also for some alternative humorous lyrics the Bob Hope version is mildly amusing.

I've started taking my son over the last 2 years and he loves singing along to Goodnight Irene! Nothing like it when in full song. Does anyone know the history behind it out of interest? The famous Ledbelly song was covered and was high in the charts. It was quite typical of crowds to sing chart favs ( probably most famous with the Beatles at Anfield.) We were losing at half time to Plymouth and they started to sing it. Some say they ad libbed with a few goodbye comments to say the game was over. We played well in the second half and as we started to get back in the game it was Rovers fans who started singing it. We won and it was adopted forever as our song (as it should always be). Like Weetabix at Shrewsbury and Del Shannon's Runaway and The Rocky Theme at Twerton , the Gas Works and mud at Eastville, there is more about being a Rovers fan than just the 11 players on the pitch. Heard several explanations of the origins of it but definitely Argyle are at the heart of it. My old man said Argyle brought it with them and were singing it at Eastville which ties in with your story and he said that when we went ahead we sang Goodnight Argyle at them and at the next home game we sang Goodnight Irene again and won, then it became a superstition after that. The other version of the origin story, which I find less believable, is that it was played over the PA system at halftime in a game against Argyle and the operator couldn’t shut it off as the second half started and we scored whilst it was still playing… again we started singing an adapted version of the song as argyle were duly bidden goodnight. Whatever the origin it has remained a unique rallying call for Rovers since the mid fifties. I recall Shrewsbury Town fans remarking that they thought our stirring rendition of it at Wembley lifted the Trollope side after the early goal and that they wished they had their own song to counter it with once we’d taken control of the game.

Good op and title. Remember what recently happened when we sold Lambo and JCH, our best players, and never replaced them? Just saying... Yes but there are also contrary examples. I was thrilled week in and week out by Barry Hayles, whilst he was still here we signed a young forward who hardly got game time and looked a poor imitation. We were forced to sell Hayles by the colour of Fulham’s money and that young forward stepped up to eventually be worth as much as Hayles was in the transfer market. That was Jason Roberts and I have no doubt that having Hayles and Ipoua about cramped his style. Not saying the circumstances are exactly the same but maybe now we might see Jevani Brown step up to the plate. Another disappointing departure was Gary Penrice. I thought that might stall our promotion push but we signed a Stoke reserve being stifled at right back and gave him a role that suited him better…Carl Saunders, who is to say that Vaughan or Aguilera might make a similar impact in their time here? You never know what is round the corner. If MT is the right appointment he may get this assorted band of experienced pros and youthful loanees singing from the same hymn sheet and we might see some decent football from now until the end of the season.

To be fair Barton needed the big squad so that he could switch from plan A to plan B to plan C and so on. If your manager has a set way of playing then you don’t need full backs or wingers who can’t adapt to the style chosen. Only 5 subs maximum can get on so a squad of 16 plus promising kids should be good enough provided your top 16 aren’t inconsistent (Collins, Finley) or constantly getting injured, which was another gamble Barton took by signing players too good for L1 (Rossiter, Ward) but with eye watering injury records. Taylor has addressed the inconsistency in two ways he’s got Finley reaching the right levels every week and shipped out the occasionally mercurial but often mediocre Collins. Some bodies in to share the load given the exhaustion levels and the high workload would be desirable but the main rebuild in summer is when we’ll see both the manager’s and board’s true intentions.

Bolton forum claiming several people saying he has checked into the hotel next to their stadium and also has changed his Twitter profile to professional footballer and removed Bristol Rovers. Oh no! If he gets an accurate impression of what it’s like to live in Bolton/Horwich he’ll never bloody sign for them!

Like the thinking here in starting a deadline day thread early. Tell our transfer admin that today is the last day of the window then when they deliberately procrastinate on a deal and complete it at 23:00:15 expecting the transfer to be rejected they will be shocked to hear they were successful in beating the cut off by 23 hours and 59 minutes!

As we aren't safe and have an injury prone back line I think it would be madness to get rid. All we need is one of Friend, Wilson, Hunt to be injured again. ……which one of them will be. All good players but they do like our medical room. Not their fault I should add but true nevertheless. UTG! Plan is to convert Rossiter into a defender to cover….oh wait….

I don’t get why people keep suggesting we jettison decent players to sign inferior ones. We should be aiming to come out of each window stronger not shorn of the current fan scapegoats to parachute in resources that are not setting the world alight at their current clubs. Just swapping current ‘hate’ figures for future ones.

Nah it's really poor for me. Some banter around actual football sure but signing a player? It's a business deal I really don't get what we're gloating about. It did seem a bit strange to me it's not like we are some major rivals or there is any needle or anything is there really , I doubt you looked up anything about us until Conteh much like I didn't have any interest in Rovers since that Play-off final . But maybe it's just the modern way I have enjoyed reading this over the last few days a decent and varied forum , I will be keeping an eye out for your results and checking in on this every so often for sure so you have a new subscriber . Hopefully a win tomorrow and Conteh plays (well) Did he have his own song at Grimsby? It seems to me like Karma Chameleon would be made for him! Something like…. Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil Conteh boys Lets make some noise whilst he destroys whoa-oo nothing he finds easier than breaking up the play which he does all day then he sets us away whoa-oo he’s the boss of the midfield (midfield) all opponents have to yield Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil, Kamil Conteh all he shields the ball Until they fall… nothing he finds easier…etc

Upon his arrival we all thought he was a super tro(o)per but now he’s thinking “ it’s slipping through my fingers, mamma Mia, better ring, ring someone for an SOS or it’s so long and Hasta Manana baby!” The owner looks at him and winks “Knowing me, knowing you I wish it was the day before you came!” MT replies “Same here…I do, I do, I do, I do, I do!”

I reckon we scored too early. Norwich were sleepwalking out of the cup until somebody galvanised them into life with a rollicking half time team talk. 0-0 at half time and they don’t get a passion injection…. We score 20 minutes into the second half rather than the first and the game is ours.

Several times in this thread you mentioned Richard Kone and as can be seen from the recent update post above a club at our level has taken the plunge with him and he’s begun promisingly so I’d mark that down as a successful scout. I think there have been other examples where a player has attained or surpassed the standard you suggested they’d reach. I know we’re all hoping you’ll unearth the next Nigel Martyn or Gary Penrice but we also know how rare they are and for every one of them there are a hundred Shaq Hunters!
Now this thread has achieved a decent age and sample size I wonder whether it is representative of a typical club scouts results? How many of the names on here reached or exceeded a level equivalent to L1? How many may not have attained that level but have achieved raising themselves to a higher standard of football than that they were playing when first talent spotted? How many stagnated or slipped back? And how many gave up entirely? I know several were suggested for trials or development squad possibilities rather than recommendations for the first team squad so even those plying their trade at a higher level now would be considered development successes. If the hit rate stats prove comparable to those of a footy scout in a paid position maybe you could wave those numbers in the current regimes direction and you might have their ear in future.
