I actually really like this lady on comms, showing far more passion and excitement than any of the regulars!

I also played for Avon Athletic in the 90s as a 4-9 year old. Played with Josh Klein-Davies for Stoke Lane as a teenager. Avon Athletic in early 90s had loads of decent players who were on schoolboy contracts. My age group had the likes of Aaron Brown, Mark Summers, Joe Burnell, Fidell Richards, Scott Hill, plus others who were all signed up at schoolboy level when it meant something. Another ex-Avon Athletic one myself, late 90s till early 00s, also made one appearance for the Avon Youth League 'reps' side. Back then it felt like an international call up!

I can't see Cox could have saved a header which went in off the inside of the post, the issue is that Wilson shouldn't be letting the goal scorer have the chance to score in the first place? You could be right, will have to watch it back. But I don't have long term concerns with either of them to he honest. A disappointing moment in an otherwise solid display

My take on that:
Cox - looks like a good keeper, 2 dodgy kicks straight to them but made up for it with lots of confident catches. Could he do better with the goal? It was a very slow header but right in the corner so hard to judge
Hoole - Good defensively but didn't get forward at all. Avoidable booking Wilson - strong leader, blatant yellow but will be key this season Connolly - not quite comfortable on the left, the way we play forced him to either slice a left footed clearance or pass it back inside. Never totally convincing but didn't really do anything wrong either Gordon - Good game. Assumed he isn't 100% as otherwise he wouldn't have come off but looked more solid than last season
Finlay - Great ball to Brown for the goal, lacked his tenacity after the early booking which really halted the full on display that we expect Ward - Fantastic to tie him down on a contract, looks like a proper midfielder at this level
Thomas - other than the goal he didn't do a lot, a couple of tidy touches but forced to play deep most of the game. Will have a good season! Brown - Really intelligent player, great ball for the goal, great ball for Collins chance and he will definitely get plenty of goal involvements this season Collins - Missed a sitter for his standards after rounding the keeper and very much in and out from then on
Marquis - good strong display, winning some dubious free kicks and definitely having the beating of Towler! Missed a good early chance but the goals will come with that lot around him
Taylor - Not sure why he came on, Connolly wasn't bad. Worried me a few times and suffered similar to Connolly on the left forced on his weaker foot but undoubtably he will come good, really good.
Evans - Didn't really do anything Sinclair - decent effort from distance the only moment of note Grant - Great to see him back and looking fit but Gordan was good, not sure why he came on! Hope we can have him fit for the season
Overall a decent point but couldn't' quite hold on. Liked Brown very much and think he will be key this season, like a left footed Collins. Struggled with just 2 in midfield, would have preferred Grant to come on for Thomas rather than Gordon and added another man in midfield as we were getting overrun as the game went on but it's a good opening day really. Gutted with the goal but onwards and upwards. Barnsley next, after their result today expect plenty of goals in that one!

OK, so apologies for the rant, but...
No idea why people seem to always want to compare the mens and womens games, it's a silly and pointless debate as they are completely different games.
That doesn't mean either one is better, most on here prefer watching Rovers to prem football despite the standard being significantly lower after all.
The womens game has improved significantly in the last decade and despite it not having the pace and power of the mens game the passing and movement in the top sides is really entertaining to watch. England use the likes of Hemp, James, Kelly and Toone to the max, just watch a few games, the football is fantastic. No route one long ball, all football, and best of all hardly any diving or complaining to the refs or time wasting.
The Euros were fantastic and I'm sure this world cup will be fantastic. I'll be supporting the Lionesses throughout, it's all on TV in the mornings so if your not bothered just don't watch, stop criticising it just because its not the same level as the mens game. No one is claiming it is, it's different but really exciting nevertheless.
But if you are happy to watch the gas rather than premiership sides, particularly when we were in league 2/conference, then watching the top womens teams will impress you in terms of the football being played (unless you enjoy lumping the ball up to a 6"4 forward time and time again).
It's two different sports, played slightly differently, but both entertaining and exciting to watch. They shouldn't be compared directly just like they aren't in athletics, tennis or rugby, but mens and womens football both deserve to be enjoyed by all. If your a sceptic watch the latter stages at least. If you like football, being played on the floor, with technical ability and passion, then I guarantee you will enjoy the games!
Rant over. Up the Lionesses and the Gas girls!

I'm confused. What were the Screen Actors Guild doing at the Mem? I know the snake tried a bit of acting in that incident with Connolly in the first half but come on...

Lofty's chance looked harder from those highlights than right behind it live, had to stretch to get the shot away. But still, he has to do better after doing all the hard work!!? Collins burys that all day long!

It seems like I am in the minority based on constant moans around the Thatchers End but I love seeing us play it short and try different corner/free kick routines.
Two of our 6 goals this season have come from these, our last corner goal last season at Port Vale was a short corner and more often than not when we change that angle or get a couple of extra players involved we look more dangerous than just lumping the ball into the box.
So despite the moans of "get it into the box" (one guy who stands behind me says this almost as much as "just run with it" and "play it down the middle") I'd like to see us mix it up a lot more.
Keep it up gas and stick with the short set play routines!!!

I’m sure Nick Higgs mentioned Filton years ago when the airport first closed and said it was a non-starter? Yeah, I'm sure it was him who said the ground was contaminated or something? Obviously not that much seeing all the developments going on in the area. Unless it was just someone on here starting that rumour. Someone definitely said it though!

I agree, he looked solid in a tough role this evening. His involvement in the goal deserves a 7 on its own, superb run and pass!

Corresponding friendly then if you want to be that pedantic about it in just a pre-season match thread. That's not what I was getting at. I'm just saying the first friendly of pre season tells us nothing, it's just a fitness exercise and opportunity to give players a chance. Nah, if we scrape a win, draw or lose then its just a fitness exercise, if we smash 'em then it means we're going up, definitely, without a shadow of doubt 👍

Lucky we're playing Swindon really. Play like this against a decent side and we'd be getting d!cked by now. Just can't see how we are supposed to be playing. Its not football that's for sure.

He was comfortably more than two yards off, anyone with a pair of eyes and an understanding of the offside rule could see that. They should have won by 4 or 5 according to Ricketts Baffling from Ricketts as usual. Grant and Tutonda should have scored in the first half and Hanlon definitely should have wrapped it up late on, they had 2 for Clarke in the first half and the goal line clearance by Ehmer and was all they did in the second. I'd say a draw would have been pretty fair but I can't say for a second that we didn't deserve our win. As the second half went on they really didn't look like scoring and with the amount of sloppy passes their defenders kept making I thought out of the two teams we were more likely to add a second than them an equaliser. Great gritty performance and first class 'game management' from us there. Onwards and upwards!

Anyone making their way to the seaside to catch WSM V Wimborne today? Get a scouting report on Ryan Jones? Be good to catch some live footy and now with the added bonus of watching a future rovers player too!

I am not on Twitter. Can one of the young whipper snappers on here tell me if these are for sale in sticker form? If not can any of our resident geeks, nerds or tech wizards run some out? Massive win and huge credit to Garner and the squad. Lincoln had won all 4 games so far, and all tricky fixtures too, and we outplayed them at their own game at their ground. People were quick to dismiss last weeks game as Northampton were so poor and down to 10 men, I hope that both all the stick Garner has been getting is replaced with encouragement and also that he keeps this level of performance going. We have some more winnable games coming up and we need to turn two into three next week.
If we start to see this 'Garnerball' (an expression I hate as it's a style that countless teams play, its just rovers are traditionally a more direct hard working team than an intricate ball playing team) work on a weekly basis then win, draw or lose we can at least get encouragement from each game and have a positive season. This is a new, young team going through a huge change in personal and style and needed time. I think this is the start of something really positive for the club and I really hope us fans will be back to witness it soon! UTG

Sounds like this afternoon we will find out the captain and two vice-captains as voted for by the players and staff. Interesting way of doing it.
Ehmer for me, he's leading this poll too, I always like a dominating centre back captaining the side, with Rodman and Jaakola as the vice-captains.
