Remember James would be 1 of 4 strikers - DC knows he'll do a job if coming off bench because he's a real grafter and plays for the team. Ok not a goalscorer but of course he'll bag a few next season.
The key is we really need a main striker (Taylor replacement ) , but who Nichols ? Godden ? Someone else ?

Bristol Evil Post, January 1st 2018. Rovers will do well to hold onto striking sensation Luke James who has already hit 20 goals this season and has been attracting attention from Championship teams. James, who joined from The Posh in July 2017 after a woeful season long loan at The Mem which saw him fail to score a single goal said he was delighted to have hit the form he was always capable of. Rovers fans remain stunned into silence.

Who says we don't want him? DC obviously wants him at the club if he's made a bid for him? Me - and the majority on here who will be paying his wages. Let's leave the transfer policy to the fans then and see how that turns out

I wouldn't be against signing James as 4th/5th choice. Could use him in the development side. He isn't as bad as some make out. Unfortunately not scoring at all is what he is going to be remembered for (and that missed penalty)

I find it hard to understand why we would go for either.

This cannot be serious. If Luke James is part of a double package it beggars belief frankly. If this comes off, that's three strikers we will have on our books that will not take us anywhere near a top six position next season. DC IMO is putting his head on the block if LJ, EH & RG are three of our main strike force next season - this is not good enough. Who says DC is interested in him as an out and out striker?

Since when was football a popularity competition? In fact if fans had their way there would have been a decent chance Matty T would never have had the chance to start scoring goals, Lambo would have been shipped out, Etc Difference being we've already experienced the delights of what Luke James had to offer and it wasn't very pleasant. So you would be happy to have James back then I would be happy to let one of the most amazing managers in our history get on with his job and to see what he and his staff could do with any player they felt were value for money & could do a job for us.

Peterborough have signed another young forward today for a "substantial fee" - Jack Marriott from Luton. I hope DC's lack of real experience in transfer market dealing (with a sizeable budget) is not coming home to roost. Rumours they paid £400k for Marriott. They'll probably try and re-coup that for Nichols & James. It'll be interesting to see who scores more next season. Marriott will probably score more than Nichols/James combined.

Bit of an odd thing to say given we've bought Sercombe for a rumoured £150k and have had two bids rejected today. It seems to me the prices have gone (even more) mental than ever. Some of the money being spent this close season in L1 is absolutely insane.

Posh chairman posted this at the end of May on FB:
A little perspective from me on the 'market' at moment re footballers. Its been a fascinating May so far talking to the many free transfers, many Transfer targets that would need fee paid for them, many agents of players from below and above possibly available.. And ones thing thats for sure is the sudden shift in L1 wage expectations. Some Players from Non League now turning their nose up whereby not so long ago they would walk on hot coals to sign & be sensible about terms built with incentives & improved Basic wage for the step up.. Now some dont even return calls or agents think they can go higher... and their demands way above even the average L1 basic wage for lads who've never played in the Football League. Many are on less then 1k per week and the opening gambit now from agents is contracts worth 3 times this lol..
Re league players who have are out of contract/released its even worse with now wage demands getting out of hand/control for players who have not done anything yet in game/would be deemed as a Punt, many under age of 24 (so plenty time to make their fortunes).
Prem Youngsters released/not wanted by prem clubs where they are on 600 or 700 quid per week now instantly expecting/demanding 2.5k per week deals and more having yet played 50 games of mens football.. But then again this is May with hundreds of footballers about to be released, June onwards should/will see some common sense/reality set in for lots of them and their demands. Right now its fun and games and many funny conversations with agents... the tide soon turns... has to turn or our game at our level will see many casualties going forward if some clubs keep falling for these ridiculous demands. A good football club with good recruitment plan is based on signing the right characters who want success/growth/improvement & understand that the big money comes after and not before... 'Ambition over Greed' is our mantra & something we went away from last year but something we will stand firm on this year with our young and hungry policy. We have plenty experienced players but lot of talented young players including ones we will recruit this summer and with this our one and only aim is to grow into winners on and off the field.
The Boyds, McLeans, CMS'S, Tomlins, Taylors, Bennetts, Gayles, Britts & Washingtons epitomized our mantra & didn't worry about over top contracts until they had brought success to our club and themselves.. and regardless of current climate, trust me when I say, there are plenty more of the above characters out there.. and its our Job to find them/sign them/improve them.
Just me perspective
Thanks Darragh
A very interesting insight IMO - perhaps it shows why there's been very little on the way of signings for us so far. Also interesting comment re. the tide turning from 1st July onwards - I think that's why we should relax for now; players probably taking the p*ss at the mo as still getting paid by their current clubs. Once that contract ends and they are unemployed, their stance may soon change.
We gotta trust DC.

I wouldn't pay a penny for Luke James. What use is a striker who doesn't score any goals. Sorry but I will lose a lot of faith if DC signs himk-useless.

Some of the money being spent this close season in L1 is absolutely insane. You're being far too polite. F*cking idiotic thing to say is closer to the mark. Having bids rejected is quite clearly not an indicator of budget; Dagenham and Redbridge will have bids rejected and so will Man City.

Probably tried to get LJ for a very low fee, getting both for just over their valuation of Nichols or whatever.
I think we'd be better going elsewhere to be honest, gotta trust DC though.

IMHO the fact we've even put a bid in for James shows either 1) A lack of funds 2) desperation to sign a striker 3) DC hasn't a clue No matter how you butter it up everyone else seems to buying in players apart from the gas actions speak louder than words
