It's impossible to disagree with that. And really my question wasn't a question but something to stimulate conversation on the point. The amount "they" know about "us" is quite terrifying and it seems they only want to know more. One of the most concerning things I think is that with the advent of "machine learning" programs aka artificial intelligence - they don't even know how much they know about us, it's inside the "brain" of their computer program.

I enjoy the accessibility of friends and distant family but the targeting of advertising, political manipulation and data mining is really concerning.

Earlier today, someone pointed me to a competition on Facebook, ran by Smythes the toy shop. It was to win some Lego. I had a peek, and to join the competition, I had to agree to give them access to all my Friends, Contacts and E-Mail addresses.............what a nerve.
I didn't enter the competition.

And yet we feel it an invasion of privacy to have id cards.

I carry an ID card in Germany, and I also carry my Health Insurance card. I can go to any Doctor or any Hospital, and they just swipe my card through a standard machine, and then it's, "what can we do for you Mr Nobby!".

Have you tried updating an app on your phone lately? YouTube are insistent that I update and yet when you look at the list of permissions they request they want access to emails, messages, contacts, GPS, CALL LOG! Why do they need to know where I am, who I've called and for how long to be able to watch cat videos? What I wonder most is, do they expect me to think that that level of intrusion is reasonable? Or am I not supposed to notice? Or not supposed to care?

If you`d stay away from that massage parlour, you wouldn`t need to visit the doctor quite so often.

If the powers that be want to waste their time by listening to my phone calls, checking out the web sites I visit, and monitering my e mails, let them get on with it. Much good may all that information do them.

Well, that`s a blast from the past. I lived and worked in the Fatherland, in the late 70s early 80s. I accidently wandered into some of them then.

One minute you think you are popping into a bar for a beer, and before you know it some sexy lass wants to be your girlfriend for twenty minutes !
