I played quite a decent level of football and I cant remember learning too many things from being thumped and chasing shadows.
maybe they would benefit from one or two first team fringe players in the same side to guide them?
Although it can be disheartening to get thumped I think you can learn a lot from playing against better and more experienced players, a bit like learning from your mistakes. But I agree and thought the same about having one or two fringe players or more experienced players in the side with the young lads. They could learn a lot about communication and positioning from playing with experienced players like Mansell, Easter and Mcchrystal but obviously they are not here in playing roles any more. I wonder if it would be worth seeing what they are up to on Tuesday afternoons at the minute and asking if they fancy a game with the young lads from time to time.
I'm still not convinced that you learn a lot by getting outplayed every week, imo these lads need to play in games where its even, they have a share of possession and where the games are more competitive, rather than a walkover this one sounded.
Getting beat heavily like that will be demoralising if it continues in the same vein so if opposition play experienced players we should add 2-3, if not then we dont.

Looking at the team Cheltenham put out on Tuesday it isn't too much of a surprise that our lads got well beaten. It was our development side against their reserves side so 5-1 isn't as bad as I first thought. It included Aaron Downes (age 32), Nigel Antangana (age 27), Daniel O'Shaughnessy (age 22), Dan Holman (age 27) who all have good experience around League Two level as well as a few others who have made first team appearances. As long as the young lads learn from the experience against sides like this then that's the main thing.

You can certainly learn from your mistakes. Our first team got thumped 4-1 at home to Peterborough, the following home game we beat an unbeaten Fleetwood quite easily. Chelsea got thumped 3-0 at Arsenal last season and looked clueless, they then went on a 13 match winning run on the way to winning the Premier League at a canter. These youngsters are part of the Development Squad, the clues in the title, they need to develop, they will make mistakes, the hope is they will learn from them and hopefully some will be part of the first team picture in the near future.

Of course players learn from mistakes, I just feel being mismatched against a team half full of experienced pro's isn't the best way to develop them, but hey ho someone else is paid to decide stuff like that.

I played western league or hellenic league for 15 years and i always learnt most playing against higher standard footballers even if it was painful at the time. The other issue with the development team is that there are many new players and they havnt become a team yet, they were individuals trying to impress chris hargreaves and darrell clarke v a very experienced team. With so many 1st team games coming up and some injuries it was difficult to play fringe players imo

possession was very even,in fact it was a fierce and competitive game except we made bad errors or decisions both in and out of possession and paid for it.

Which probably shows a lack of experience rather than lack of ability/potential. Thanks for that stat (sort of) about the possession. It's encouraging to hear that our side of newly put together youngsters can match a decent experienced side. As I said previously you learn from your mistakes and I agree with you that you learn more from being beat by better sides than hammering lesser sides. However, I do also agree with LMW that the young lads could learn a lot from having 1 or 2 veterans in the side. Even if it was just Mildenhall to constantly talk to and organise the back four to help them get their positioning.

A quick look at our fixture list and injury list will explain why there were no 1st team squad players in the team v cheltenham.

What happened to the Jordanian, Ghassan Abu Hassan? Did he get a work permit? I was wondering this, not seen him in a development squad for a while... The apparent Al-Qadi plan to build a training academy also for use by promising young Jordanians, may be scuppered by the UK Government's obsession with reducing the availability of work permits to foreigners now and more so post-Brexit.

The UK does sell a fair few tanks, armoured personnel carriers and planes to the ROYAL Jordan army/airforce ....might sway a permit or two

Rovers developement squad currently leading 1-0 against Pompey with Kenan Dunwald getting his 3rd goal in 3 games. Maybe we'll see him near the first team soon?

21 year old left footed winger! What's DC got to lose by giving him 10/15 mins of first team action? The game? Using that logic we may as well scrap the Development squad if DC's not going to give a 21 yr old who's playing well any game time when we're desperate for a left sided player. Although he was on the bench v Wycombe so he can't be far off making his 1st team debut.
