The thread started to discuss the locking of threads has this morning been removed.
It transpires that various mods privately discussed Gashead Gaz's post on the locked "Ian Holtbygate" thread, then sent him a PM admonishing him for what could only ever be considered a mildly offensive comment. Understandably upset by that GG has deleted his membership of this forum.
What I find to be reprehensible is that the mods let the thread run all day. I had a feeling we weren't being told the whole story, but I didn't want to directly confront the mods as a direct question would be easy to deny outright. Instead I nibbled and teased and eventually the mods fronted up as to what happened.
Once again, and because there is a suggestion of racism involved, no action was taken against the poster who called GG "Vile Racist Scum" I even read one mod giving the excuse that that person is a "Drive-by WUM"! That obviously makes it OK then. Just as long as you develop a reputation of being a good old guy you can abuse other posters with impunity.
I don't want to get involved in another long discussion about this, I felt that GG had been badly treated and to some extent let down by those tasked with "Policing" the forum. Neither do I think the mods job is an easy one, but it is vital they are even - handed and show fairness when dealing with situations. I don't think on this occasion they were.
I have nothing more to say on the matter. I will be rooting for our team tonight.

Feel a bit sorry for the mods to be honest. Damned if they do damned if they don't, they must dread posts like this being started. That said I agree with the OP and wonder if things have gotten worse since the mod recruitment drive in a "too many cooks spoil the broth" kind of scenario.

It’s not hard to avoid being controversial.
This is a football forum. Unless a terrorist incident occurs it doesn’t need to be discussed here on the football sections as it’ll just cause a stir.
As for the racism debate use good manners like you would to someone’s face and nobody will get upset.

Thank you for your post Old Gas, feedback always appreciated and can i first thank you for being civil.
I must say i don't think we handled this very well and i am disappointed to see Gashead Gaz leave as i thought it was nothing more than a poster being naive. I'm sure he didn't mean what he said with any malice and i believe we should have acted on the follow up insult.
However a decision was made by the moderators who were online at the time and action was taken. Was it correct? Well if that's how the mods saw it at the time then i stand by their decision to make it and as i said before it is a shame the poster decided to delete his own account.
The moderating team do what they think is right and not every member on here is going to agree with them, however the flip side is quite a few will. The more stern approach has come about because of the total lack of respect shown by a handful of posters recently and seeing threads descend into ridiculous name-calling is becoming tedious, therefore you will ocassionally see the moderating team lose their patience and act. It's clear for all to see that the forum is becoming a breeding ground for a few to behave how they like and the rise in 'stirring up' type posts is sadly on the rise.
As Bravefart just said we are a bit 'damned if we do, damned if we don't',

Russ put in general chat, it hasn't been removed....
I managed to find in in about 30 seconds, it's not difficult....
I agree with sir sugar that the situation wasn't dealt with very well, but the situation wasn't created by the moderating team....
By the way, the Ian holtby thread was locked after reports from users.... I would have let it continue if it weren't for requests for admin intervention....

Not the best choice of phrase used by Gaz, should have been yellow carded & everyone move on. But some love to whip it up into a storm & bicker on about it & it then becomes an issue. Seems like you can't have an opinion anymore - The stuff on who is the bigger team Pompey or Saints on the match day thread is typical -who give a toss. No issue with the Mods as I wouldn't / couldn't do it, but agree it must feel like double standards to some. All a bit tedious as Mario suggests. UTG

GG quite correctly, in my view, received a warning but instead of just accepting the warning and moving on he quit, not sure the mods really did anything wrong to warrant the need for another thread on the issue. As far as Chewbecca is concerned hopefully the mods will take appropriate action against him if he calls fellow Gasheads sc@bs again as I can't see there's any need for it on the forum, even if I don't agree with fans attending Checkatrade matches.

Brushing things under the carpet rarely eliminates an issue. Cheers. Although i understand your point. |

My problem with that is that the person at the centre of this is not here to represent himself therefore it would be disrespectful to discuss the matter further in his absence. If however this issue is the Mods handling of the matter I think it was handled correctly. |

You seem to be accusing us of being reticent to reveal what happened, or trying to hide it, or something. As far as I'm concerned, we asked about among the mods whether GG had been warned. Everyone on line at the time said 'I didn't warn him' or 'as far as I know he wasn't warned,' etc. So I posted that he wasn't warned. Then when 81 came online, he said 'I warned him.' So, I deleted the bit where I'd said he wasn't warned, and posted the correction (in reply to you, iirc). And 81 posted what had happened. |
