Depends what you want from a fullback. A Stuart Pearce type who thunders into to tackles or a Denis Irwin who is probably more the style Lee Brown plays. Both can be equally effective but the blood and thunder type will be more popular as 'appears' more committed but can cost the team giving free kicks away and picking up cards David Pipe wyhhb? Only if he’s got the bottle for it and he doesn’t start wineing!

One of the problems i find watching Brown is he very rarely put's a tackle in, he will shadow or run with a player but he never puts a crunching tackle in and sometimes he stands off far to much and then gets burnt for pace Maybe its time to give Bola another go ? Depends what you want from a fullback. A Stuart Pearce type who thunders into to tackles or a Denis Irwin who is probably more the style Lee Brown plays. Both can be equally effective but the blood and thunder type will be more popular as 'appears' more committed but can cost the team giving free kicks away and picking up cards the game of football has changed since Pearce's day but one thing I don't believe has changed and that's that defenders need to and still should do get close to op players and make it hard for them to : control the ball, lay it off, turn you etc. Too many of our players, and for me, Brown is the worst at this don't do that. The trouble is I think Bola is even softer than Brown. Both Brown and Leads also let players cross the ball too easily - it's something that DC has been screaming at them to prevent more but .........

I agree with you markczgas but DC is to blame for this because his whole philosophy is built on full backs making themselves available to receive a pass and centre halves doing the same thing. Problem is neither centre half can pass a ball and neither full back can tackle. There was an incident on Saturday that regularly occurs and that is a player had Ellis chasing back whilst Browner is stood with nobody to mark. It is the same with the centre halves and the defensive midfielder.

People blaming formations and tactics etc including the op are wide of the mark imo. Dating back to last season we have been vulnerable to folding up and getting a hammering as soon as we go behind especially away from home. Wheres the fightback? wheres the gritty determination to stay in games even at 2-0 down when defeat seems likely? I dont think the team as a whole have been mentally tough enough to cope with adversity and as a team they need to roll their sleeves up and show more guts. Dc has to take his share of the blame because the spirit he built the team on has too often been absent this season. Realeasing easter Mc crystal Mansel and Mildenhal all all the same time was a mistake I feel. They were our experienced leaders , they should have been fazed out one at a time or two in the summer two next summer. The team we’ve got is good enough but we do lack leaders on the pitch.

I really hope we can get in an experienced centre-back and combative midfielder in january. I would take that over strikers or wingers any day right now but will our budget allow it and are the right players available to fill those roles? Mansell, mcchrystal, easter and monkhouse were all experienced players who could look after themselves and younger players during their time at the club and we miss that type of influence. No disrespect to chris lines but he isnt the type of personality to fill that role despite his experience.

Man U fans said the same when Ince, Hughes and Kanchelskis we're released - you don't win anything with kids! In all seriousness we do lack leaders. I think Locks and Parts have leadership ability but can't really think of any others at the moment?

I think the captaincy is currently crucifying Lockyer, he is not a leader of men, he is though undroppable along with Sweeney, so I give that means DC is prepared to let one of the the leagues worst central pairing work it out. I do agree phasing McChrystal, Easter and particularly Manse on mass has proved to be a mistake. If pushed I would give the armband to Liam.

How can releasing 3 player who hardly started be a mistake? Did they really have a massive influence sat on the bench? The biggest issue for me is OC's loss of from and the failure to replace Monty (or release him in the first place).

Yes maybe dc"s invention of overlapping full backs has caused all these problems? I mean nobody in the whole history of football has ever used full backs like this have they?

For an away game I was expecting one change. An attacking player taken out (probably Gaffney) for an extra midfield player (probably Clarke) which I think would have been the same starting 11 as Blackburn?
The formation is working ok at home, but even after some bad results with different formations, our home form is generally ok this season.

We all know why Brown and Leads overlap - nothing wrong with that.

I always thought you needed a winger in front of them to overlap now and again, not be the main supplier of crosses.

If you have a system where you require your full backs to get well forward you need other players to cover, that hasnt happened at times. If your saying leadbitter and brown are defending badly in general i partly agree with you but i think the amount of forward runs they are making is a factor in that.

I know why we lost to Gillingham, the same reason we lost to Coventry , Bath City and on and o. They look at the table and think, "this will be easy, they're crap."

The full backs are constantly exposed as they play without anyone in front of them a lot of the time. I'd try Leadbitter in midfield and then get a new full back
