I think a special mention should go to our fans on Tuesday night, the support we gave Nichols in particular was absolutely class given how he has disappointed this season.
Positive support like that can only help whatever you think of a player. I can't imagine that happening down the road for one minute and made me proud to be a gashead.

I agree. It should be a given that we only provide positive encouragement otherwise it is effectively supporting the opposition, which in my book is treason! If overly critical fans stopped to think how they would feel if they were subjected to the same vitriol as some give out I think they would feel extremely hurt. The players are human beings with real feelings, not just avatars in a video game, and yet some people expect them to perform to their best in a hostile environment. You wouldn’t expect to receive abuse from strangers in your place of work and some organisations make sure they prosecute individuals who perpetrate such acts. Just because football is a passionate pursuit it doesn’t give individuals an excuse to overstep the laws of decency and what’s more it also defies common sense. Leave the constructive criticism to DC and help make a difference by engendering self belief through support. After all, it’s in the job description! UTG

Fair play gasheads! I was not one of them - he frustrates me far too much, so I stay silent rather than boo!

I have to agree with the OP, i hope that it gives Nichols a bit of a confidence boost and will help him throughout the off season and in to the next - I dont think the lad is going anywhere. He should realise, that fans only expect 110% on the pitch, show them that and they will keep singing songs about him.
There does look like a good player in there, Harrison had been extremely frustrating up until this year where he has really stepped up and should know that all us fans appreciate the effort he is now putting in on the pitch, the constant running, battling with opposition and not going to ground easily. I think Nichols needs to follow Harrison as an example, TN does seem bit of "playboy" sort of player, and he is all about his image, which is great is your Beckham, Ronaldo, but not when your struggling in league 1. If he can come back next season, visibly stronger, tougher on the ball, maybe with an extra yard of pace and just put himself around a bit more - fans will be far more appreciative.

It can only help him. I thought yesterday he looked OK. Obviously lacking in confidence which we as fans can help with!

He did seem to have more of a spring in his step and that may well have been due to the fans support rather than groans. He showed some good quality tuesday and I hope we persevere with him. When will the fans learn to have patience with new players and trust in the manager,? in recent times Lambert, Taylor and now Nicholls have been given stick prematurely. Support your club and support its players!

IMO 2 things needs to happen with Nichols:
Get a really good pre season under his belt, fitness, strength and work on his finishing. Get him playing a lot of games against weaker opposition so he gets a rhythm of scoring. Football can be psychological as much as anything else.
If get him on loan for a month at the start of the season away from the pressure of the Mem. He knows there is a monkey on his back and going on loan would just help him with that rhythm.
Ellis Harrison is a good example, had a poor season, scored a few, but wasn’t sharp or strong enough. Went on loan to Hartlepool. Different player this year.

So expectations for Nichols next season ? Mine are really low. He looks at the same level as Luke James - some kind of miracle needed if he's going to make any telling contribution next season.

Luke James was a fantastic talent at 18 years of age. He unfortunately suffered a cruciate ligament injury and whilst at the top level players come back as strong as ever I wonder whether the lower leagues can provide the same level of treatment and rehabilitation. Anyway, he has never been the same player since hence why he's ended up on loan at Barrow. He was worth the gamble by DC as if he could have brought out 'the original Luke James' we'd have had a really good player on our hands. Nicholls is still young and clearly talented. He seems quite mentally fragile but I think he'll get stronger as he matures. He proved last season with Peterborough that he has the ability to score goals at league one level and just needs to add a bit of strength and consistency. I back DC and Stewy to get the best out him next season.

Our fans are always fantastic. We are the envy of a lot of clubs, especially with our away following.
Really proud to be a Gashead. There is only ever one sensible choice when you are from Bristol. UTG.

I must admit I am not impressed with him, and didn't think he did anything on Tuesday, in fact for the time he was on I thought he was anonymous most f the time. But is part of it his attitude? DC admitted that Telford voluteers to play in the development squad to keep sharp. Nichols rarely appears for them.

I back DC and Stewy to get the best out him next season. 10 goals in League One last season was hardly prolific and 13 goals in 94 League One appearances in total is a poor record. Six midfielders scored more than him in League One last season and his total was also matched by a right back. I really hope he can come good eventually, however I have my doubts. Good luck to him.

Nothing can change the fact that hes had a poor season but for me he had a very good 45 minutes v wigan and looked like a really useful player for that 45 minutes. Thats good news imo.

He’s better on the ball than James but doesn’t have the fight and determination usually that James had. Other than the not scoring thing I find it hard to find similarities they’re very different players. James was all about determination but very little ability. Nichols clearly has ability but has lacked fight and determination all season. He did show a bit more Tuesday night though which he’s going to have to keep doing because I’m pretty sure the first thing DC asks for from his players is determination.

Ellis Harrison isn’t a great example he forced the move even though DC didn’t want it, played twice and broke his leg before only really coming to form 18 months later after having a difficult 16/17 season where he struggled to find his best. DC tends to loan first teamers out if they are not in his plans, Harrison aside I can’t remember a senior professional that has been loaned out and stayed at the club after to play a meaningful role.
