Extraordinary scenes from Korea today. Couldn't have dreamt that would happen even a few months ago. Kim Jong-un inviting Moon Jae-in to step onto North Korean soil was just extraordinary. Will the peace last or is it just a game? Unbelievable scenes all the same.

He knows what he's doing, he'll get rid of most of the nukes, in return demand a seat at the top table.

Massive sanctions against his country will be lifted. He only went nuclear to get on the big boys table. Very clever move since all world politics cares about is who can they bully or steal from.

Not too sure of this myself but I understand the thought behind it, could this be seen as a vindication of Trump's policy, not least by Trump himself?
Last year he launched a cruise missile attack on Syria at the same time as he was hosting the Chinese president. China could see Trump was serious and not wanting Kim to fall, started suggesting he tones things down.
It could be that the maxim of talk softly but carry a big stick has been replaced by talk loudly and wave the big stick.
This could embolden Trump to be more assertive on foreign policy.

NK say they are destroying their nuclear weapons programme, however, deep down nobody believes them. So, rattle them, threaten them, and see if they start to threaten nuclear armageddon again. If they do, then it shows they are telling porkies. If they don't then we have then over a barrel and we can slap them like we would a ginger step-child !

I don't believe in this 'talk softly but carry a big stick' nonsense. I'm more of a 'peace through superior firepower' sort of guy.

Nobody does bad things because it`s in their nature. Put your trust in people, treat them with respect, and all will be well. Just like Munich 1939.

Yes, yes, I believe in all of that. Just don't forget to get your retaliation in first ! Oh, hang on. The second line, listening to Oldie, Hugo and Blue Butterfly. You do realise that it will make my ears bleed !

Where have I said nobody does bad things because it's in their nature? Perhaps you are confused by the whole Nature/Nurture question. I don't believe a child is born evil. I do firmly believe that people are capable of doing evil things. Surely then the logical conclusion is that the perpetrators of bad things are a product of nurture. I accept that it's possible that people may be born with a natural predilection to certain behaviours or temperaments that may make wrong doing more likely just as it's possible that a person may be born with certain desirable physical attributes for certain things. If 2 athletes have a child but completely fail to get thier kid to exercise then it's not going to be an athlete is it. Same goes the other way, if a child is born with a temper for example, but it is never taught impulse control or diclipine as a child then that kid has a much higher chance of committing a violent crime. As I said elsewhere, the reasons for poor nurturing are shown to be socioeconomic. Lack of education, health, wealth and family units are vital factors. The second issue is one of how you actually deal with crime and socioeconomic status. Thats a far trickier one to deal with and if I'm honest I'm not well informed enough to discuss at length. What I will say is that currently our criminal justice system is woeful. In my opinion criminals need to be either punished or rehabilitated. We don't do either properly. Sentences for certain crimes are stupidly short and frequently full terms are not served anyway. I'm really not sure which side I'm on with prisons but I'd probably say they are too soft and sentences are too short. We also don't do enough to tackle the factors that lead people to crime in the first place. All this shows is that being tough on crime (hard right) and trying to rebalance inequality (looney left) are both needed and that 2 party politics in this country is not working because neither side can accept the other has a good idea and just want to score points with petty name calling or make blasé statements like the one you and Nobby did about Oldie, BB and myself. For the record, as with most aspects of my life, balance is normally the answer. There are good and bad ideas in both sides of the political spectrum. Sadly, for people like me, there is no one that represents that.

Eloquently put, Hugo. And not much there that I`d disagree with either. I will say, that I can`t see what`s so dreadful about petty name calling though. Tom`s mum and dad did, and nobody has taken offence at that, have they?

Frankly they are less able to behave in a grown up way than we are!! Can't remember, was it Cameron who said he wanted to end Punch and Judy politics?

As I was named in this thread thought I might reply. The trouble is Hugo, there are some, indeed many, who always revert to their base instincts regardless of what is staring them in the face. Sad thing is I think we may have lost. Trump in America, loonies in Italy and Neanderthal clowns like Reese Mogg in the UK. Meanwhile, food banks, education, health service.....and so on.

Blimey Les, a few lines from you with enough ammo to start multiple threads "Neanderthal clowns like Reese Mogg" - Can you expand on that sentence?

The guy has created a self brand which hoodwinks people into thinking he is intelligent and actually thinks through policies and outcomes. The uniform, the anachronistic accent and brazen petty nationalism are covers for the total vacuous statements he makes. I would challenge anyone to be able to quote one actual action with a defined planned outcome he has ever proposed.
