Not sure how or why, but apparently Scunthorpe had a much better budget than us the season just gone. Their chairman is pretty rich, he gifts them a lot of money. Our owner could do the same.

Was there ever any official indication from the club that we were interested in this player?
Just asking, like.

We've already 'moved in that direction' with the signings of Dunnwald and Baghdadi.
I don't think we have resigned Keenan Dunwald have we? Or have I missed that in amongst all the rumours?

I'm not sure, but the point I was making is we have moved in the direction of signing players from abroad with those signings last summer.

I've only seen highlights on tv and he looked ok, but I'm not fussed we haven't signed him, plenty of good players across Europe available to target. We have a history of signing them don't we ? and then their's Brexit

If the likes of Scunthorpe and Crawley can make a success of it, I'm sure we can too.

Oxford and Port Vale massively struggled in League One after the massive influx of foreign players struggled to adapt to the English game. I think looking to the continent for players is a great idea but I think at first we are probably better off only looking at 1-2 who we have extensively scouted to see if they have the attributes and the willingness to make it over here. Then we are not so reliant on Foreign players and will have backups if the moves don’t work out, it won’t be as costly too.

I agree, you wouldn't want to flood the team with foreign imports, but at the same time you have to judge things on an individual basis. Would you turn down someone with the right attitude and who is twice the player of the alternative just because you gave already recruited two or three from abroad? Of course not. Doing our homework on the players will be crucial, as it is will all players. I think part of the reason Port Vale and Oxford struggled is because their managers had never managed in this country before.

The two development squad goalies at both overseas too, aren't they?
Stephan Leoni, Vitas Astavjevs, Guy Ipoua, Marcus Andresson from memory. Paul Nixon came via Australia?
Oh, and Tim Parkin 😁

Oh, and Tim Parkin 😁 It's a shame we didn't secure the work permit for Nigel Pierre. He went on to score 22 goals from 57 international appearances.

I think Paul Nixon may have been a New Zealand international (but could be wrong). The Nigel Pierre fiasco was really disappointing as sounded like a great prospect at the time.

Available on free?
The only player to have scored over 20 goals in League 1 more than once in the last few years, unless I'm wrong, is Billy Sharp, who cost Sheffield United something like £3M. That's the kind of money you need to spend to get a guaranteed 20+ goal striker.
Some people seem to think that prolific strikers are everywhere, but only 2 or 3 players a season score more than 20 goals a season in League 1, and they tend to play for the clubs with the big budgets.
Billy Sharp cost them about £500k, but I agree with your point. I'm not one of those people that think prolific strikers grow on trees, but there are good ones about on a free that could POTENTIALLY score us 15-20 goals, we might just have to look further afield to find one. Sergio Buenacasa is out of contract at Barakaldo in Spain and with his attributes could potentially score goals at this level Alex Shalk is out of contract at Ross County and with his attributes could potentially score goals at this level. Melvin Platje is out of contract at Telstar in the Dutch 2nd tier and could potentially score goals at this level. Adriano Grimaldi is out of contract at Preussen Munster in Germany and could potentially score goals at this level. There are other good ones about, but some of the better ones on frees have already fixed themselves up with clubs. Ah, was looking at his original move to Sheffield Utd! Latest one was £705k according to transfermarkt, but I bet it was quite a signing on fee. But anyway.
Thing is, of the players that scored 15+ goals in the league last season, quite a few scored less than 10 the season before, and I bet a few will score less than 10 in the coming season. According to the demands of many, that would constitute failure, as potential isn't good enough for them, they must be scoring loads from the off, every season. That consistancy is really hard to come by.
Who'd be a manager.
