We signed Bennett from a team who were, from memory, below us in the table when he was released, using your logic he should have only been signed by a Div 2 side. and using your logic you want us to release decent players to help rival league one teams out. Surely the fact that none of our players get signed by fellow L1 clubs indicates we are doing the right thing by releasing them? Pompey made a mistake releasing Bennett. It could just be that paul cook liked bennett but he didnt suit kenny jackett? Thats how it goes sometimes.

Had a feeling that we could have seen Byron at his best next season, but as has been said, not too much of a loss, good luck Byron hears to happier times for you at Bury. He's 30 years old this year. He's played all his career in bottom half of L1 and in 2. He's not a bad player but not a player that can take us onto the next level. Wish him well at Bury.

I always liked him. He is a good player - certainly hope we won't regret it

I wish him well and hope he does well but there are better wingers out there. He was never going to get us to the play offs or the top 6 in League 1 even if he had his best season ever. Not good enough to push us on and DC with the signings of Sercombe, Bennett and Upson knew that. Different calibre imo. Friends with Ryan Lowe the Bury manager who he says will get the best out of him. Dare I say Byron should have taken more responsibility for his own play rather than expect the manager to get the “best out of him.” Or am I being a bit harsh with hindsight? Anyway we move on and get better. UTG! Totally agree. The guy clearly had ability but was never really prepared to bust a gut so see why DC never picked him on a regular basis. If you are not able to motivate yourself and have to rely on a manger to get the best out of you there is a problem. very pleased he was released as we can do so much better - I'd rather bring back a 40 year old Monkhouse!!!

You can’t the poor buggers dead and I thought he was a lot older than 40? More mid to late 70’s I would say.

Not sure he was really released, was he? Thought he had his contract bought up and became a free agent in order to engineer his move, otherwise we would have missed the window before it closed. Yeah, I know Portsmouth didn't release him in a traditional sense but they still let him go for nothing as they released him from his contract early by buying the rest of it up so I would class him as being released.

I still think it was a mistake though as we have got an excellent player on our hands, Pompey were turning down bids from Ipswich for him in the summer.

Port Vale started playing him as a left back quite a bit last season.

Good luck super Byron, I always felt he had the potential to really push on and become a good player for us but he never really found the consistency.
Hope he can find some form for them!

No that's what I thought when I read the article, seems to only bother when he feels like it and that's down to his own application.
Also it would be interesting to know which L1 clubs were interested in signing him. I would guess that they do not exist....
