We appear to have gone backwards in this area! Yesterday it was obvious we were going to concede, we looked like an accident waiting to happen. Surely clean sheets are a starting point for all clubs. Mr Coughlan is not earning his crust and we look worse than we were before he came in. If we get suspensions or injuries in this area we are truly in deep do do. We will have to play the kids! They couldn't do much worse, could they??

Very good question.
I admit to giving Coughlan some stick as he came off at half time yesterday. I can accept errors, but these are basic ones that are being made over and over again.
For all that I was frustrated yesterday though, I suspect he's probably as frustrated as DC is that the players are not performing.

You could easily bring the head of recruitment into it as well.
If it isn't the defensive coach and our players are just crap then why was there no defensive recruitment identified and sorted over the summer?
We keep watering money away on ancillary staff whilst the core product on the pitch gets worse and worse

The new coach has taught our central defenders how to attack the ball whenever it comes in to our box.

The new coach has taught our central defenders how to attack the ball whenever it comes in to our box. Shame it seems he hasn’t taught our fullbacks to close down and prevent crosses. Would have got a point yesterday.

The new coach has taught our central defenders how to attack the ball whenever it comes in to our box. Professional footballers need to be taught that?!...............or have I missed the sarcasm?

I dont think its Coughlans fault none of the defence are good enough James clarke has been the only defender to come out of this season so far with any real credit. He was the one most would have let go in the summer too.

I think it's unfair to hammer Coughlan so early on. He's not had that long with these players. Give him until Christmas before you start blaming him for not making a difference to our defence.

It’s a bit like being a top tradesman if you haven’t got the right tools you are stuffed.

We have no left back and none of our defenders are anywhere near top league 1 players

Disagree Leadbitter would have gone first I reckon can’t defend for toffee, can’t cross, has pace nothing else, should have said cheerio when he stalled on his deal.

It's the weakest area of our team no doubt, we need a new commanding keeper and a strong tall heading machine at centre back
I wonder if DC is thinking more of a 3 - 5 - 2 formation when everyone is fit? Something like
New Keeps
Locks New CB Broadbent Sincs/ Clarke/ Upson
Parts Sercs Lines THD
Payne Nichols/Reilly/Jak
Still leaves pace on the bench with Leads and Benno, defensive cover with Craig and Clarke and it seems like Payne will be top choice for number 9 with a fight to play alongside him?
So maybe with new faces/returns from injury our team will look different in a few weeks? Regardless, we need to start playing with more fight and belief and I do believe DC will be kicking a few botties and I hope my trip to London Tuesday night at least sees a return to whoever plays playing with pride

I think most opponents know they can expose the weakness at right back when both Leadbitter and James Clarke are pulled into the middle, and out of position Sercombe does not cover back.

Without knowing, I'd assume he's our highest earner (perhaps alongside Locks) so feel like DC will try to find a place for him. That's just my view though.

Can only work with the tools you have at your disposal. I can't understand blaming coaches and giving players escape ropes. They have been playing football for as long as they can remember and should know the basic and understand their strengths and weaknesses.

It's all very well saying don't blame the coach if the players are not good enough but our players seem to be getting worse!
