Leads was fouled just outside the box, the ref got that one right but TBH it deserved a pen, although how the Swansea player didn't get a card is a bit of mystery. Feel your being harsh on Nichols as once again he did everything but score one shot blocked at the last second, he hit the post and was just too short to put an header in the net, plus would have been clean though on goal if Bennet had found him rather than the Swansea player with a though ball. Meanwhile Payne never looked like scoring or winning a physical battle with his opposite number. I feel DC needs to be brave on Saturday and start with Nichols & JakubiaK or at least tell Payne he's got until half time to do something or he'll be subbed off for AJ. Agree about Nichols. Everything you said is spot on. He also set pain up Payne with a great chance after beating 2 or 3 players and won a free kick on the edge of the box that Sercombe put just wide after winning his battle with 2 centre backs.
Payne was ineffective despite decent workrate on this occasion and Reilly looked lost when he came on.
Jakubiak scored a cracking solo goal but as Stewert said post match, he won't do that very often. He needs to improve his all round game and improve his movement to get more chances inside the box. That said, I'd probably give him a chance up front with Nichols on Saturday as he should be full of confidence after last night.
For what it is worth, thought Upson, Rodman, Sercombe and Nichols all had decent games as did Craig and Clarke.

He won’t do it very often because he doesn’t get selected very often. Difficult to improve his all round game when you are bench fodder. We’ve persevered with Nichols for little or no return.....

........ Whilst watching I really thought where is our number 1 National game going? These players should be playing regular football but not for a premiership or Championship Under 21- they should be learning their trade as individuals playing for League 1 and 2 sides at their holding clubs expense or perhaps there should be a look by the FA at the whole concept but playing these teams in a competition with "Men" is not the way forward. ...... I guess they feel they will get better quality coaching thus improving their game more in a richer/bigger club?

Fair enough,( but it could be argued he should return more than that if employed as a goal scorer) but it makes the point he only got there by coaching AND playing. So how will Jak improve if not playing enough to see if he can improve? Ok, he is a loan not “our” player but any improvement can only benefit us this season and we need all the help we can get at this moment in time as I see it.

Oh I completely agree, I'm just advocating that Nichols actually does provide for the team more than given credit for. I'd have Jak alongside him from the start on Saturday with Payne ready if we need to mix it up.

Personally, I’m absolutely astonished there were 100+ nutters who gave up their Wednesday evening to travel to Swansea to watch us play a load of kids in a joke competition! Hardly kids with an average age of 20 for the 18 players in their squad last night. Four of those players have played in the Championship this season and beaten Wimbledon and Charlton away this season. Remind me how have we done away against those sides in recent seasons. My point still stands IMO. Nutters!

Wow, so we beat an Under 21 team, and as always the hapless Nichols fails to score

As for the attendance, ESPN, who are usually pretty reliable had it as N/A whether that means none attended or they were in the bar when they were counting them, I'm not sure. The other two games at Shrewsbury and Luton had 1500 and 1800 which seems quite high Around just 500 turned up according to Hamer who should know given his previous Swansea connections. I can't really understand why the EFL are happy to destroy what was a decent lower league competition. My fear is Sunderland will make the final so it's seen as a another successful season for the Cheakertrade Trophy

Don't forget the pointless new Checkatrade thread he's created, which celebrates our win with a swipe at DCs tactics in games yet to happen.

I don't hate the club, I just think Clarke has made a complete pigs ear out of it.

Away at Northampton next round. I see Sunderland have Newcastle U21's - that might bring home to them the insulting nature of this competition.
Fixtures to be played w/c 7th January.
