A lot of remarks floating about on this recently about DC playing players out of position. More on 20mans show last night.
Who and what were they then as I hardly recall any.
Playing players out of position is playing Tom Parkes left wing, Adam Virgo centre forward, & Michael Smith centre mid (Mcghee), not playing Liam Sercombe, a midfielder, on the left side or right side of midfield.

Playing Sercombe a bit wider than he should have been is all that I can recall.
Craig playing LB for a couple of games maybe?

Whilst I agree, I think the statement of those accusing should actually be "playing players out of their favoured position"

I think DC would have been slaughtered by some on this forum if he had picked Martin to play left wing. Managers often get mocked for playing players in a different position but it can sometimes work and change careers. Would Marcus Browning of had a successful career in the game if Malcolm Allison had not switched him from centre forward to midfield? What would have become of Gareth Taylor if he had not switched from Centre Back to Striker or Gary Penrice moving from the wing to Striker? I'm sure there are many other examples both with us and elsewhere.

I could never see the argument, the manager uses players he has available in the position he thinks they would be most effective on a match day.

Whilst I agree, I think the statement of those accusing should actually be "playing players out of their favoured position" I had the discussion about Sercombe with another fan, who said Sercombe should always play centre mid. I asked where Lines would play and he said centre mid. I asked in that case who wins the ball in order to give them possession and he went silent.

Clearly the error there is that Lines should not be anywhere but on the bench at the moment.

Why should they necessarily be playing at the same time? Or better yet, a flat 4 in midfield?

I think the issue with DC was changing formation and players too often. GC wanted to stick to 442 with left footed players on the left hence Martin fitting into the system (because of THD lack of match fitness) that the rest of the players are becoming familiar, and successful with.

And therein lies the problem we've had since the start of last season. How to incorporate the two players who have the ability to hurt sides. Sercombe has obviously been a quality signing, however his arrival has caused a problem that still hasn't been resolved.

Pretty sure Carl Saunders was a full back before Gerry Francis brought him to the gas. Ian Alexander was a winger converted into one of best full backs of all time

If players are good enough they can adapt, say between left / right / centre, but whether they want to or not is another matter.

I'm pretty certain he was but never really had an opportunity for a run of games in the first team due to the good quality strikers we had at the time. Malcolm Allison realised what a good athlete he was and dropped him into midfield where he went on to have a good career including Wales caps if I remember rightly.

Im pretty sure Marcus Browning started as a centre forward.
A good one is David Mehew. Started as a striker, Gerry moved him to right midfield where he did a job but also was our top scorer in our promotion season.
Gerry also occassionally played Sealey or the New Zealander (name escapes me) on the left when Percy was injured. They were both strikers and did a job, but also carried a goal threat. He even played Devon there on occassions when Dennis Bailey was with us on loan the previous season.
None were in their 'natural' position but all did the job for the overall benefit of the team, which was enhanced by the moves. Exactly whey Sercombe has often ended up wide, as it allows for his creativity but also provides a real goal threat from wide areas which you may not get from a 'natural' winger.
So basically those saying DC played players out of position are using a stick to beat him with when that stick is in fact non existent. A tad embarrassing really.

The NZ player was Paul Nixon I believe.
