Agree. Good to see DC doing normal things and having a deserved break from football management. It's hard enough supporting this club so try being the only guy holding the club together for a number of years. Cant wait to see him back in the game doing what he does best. IF we stay up, it paints both DC and GC in a good light, in my opinion. When a club is truly rotten it is impossible to turn around, as we have seen a couple of times in our recent past. DC probably lost his way a little but he also had a lot of bad luck with personal issues with players and forwards that looked decent on paper when we signed them, just not firing. Add in Holmes-Dennis not being fit until literally the game after he left and it was a bit of a perfect storm. GC could come in with fresh eyes, go back to basics and get rid of a couple of players who brought the dressing room down. Now we have to make bloody sure we can finish the job! In DC's last 36 games we won FOUR. How can he be painted in a good light. He is the reason we are in the sh** FFS. He is in our History, Gone, Yesterdays news

Anyone who knows DC clearly knows that progress off the pitch was not as good as he (and all of us) wanted. The badges 'argument' is laughable. All staff in the modern day take their badges. In certain circumstances / places you even HAVE to have them. Whether it makes you a better or worse coach / manager is certainly a moot point, but having them definitely doesn't make you a bad coach / manager. Everyone is an individual. Reducing football down to stereotypes is weak. It's similar to real-life jobs. For example, to be an accountant you will (very likely) HAVE to have CIMA/AAT and the like. The same applies to footyballin'.

Looks lean as though he has lost weight so hopefully doing some self-care. He did look tired towards the end of his reign. I'm one of his biggest fans and my dialogue re his conversation with GC re badges was very much tongue in cheek and nothing more

Some of the disrespect shown here is pretty disgusting really. Our greatest ever manager. End of. I hate to say it but I rate DC about 3rd in all time managers. Not a stitch on Gary Megson I'm sure you meant Don Megson

If we're comparing promotions against that key marker of getting us into the Championship, then I suppose DC would be about 4th, since Bert Tann, Don Megson, and Gerry Francis did it and he didn't. Perhaps you can discount Bert Tann, since that was ancient history, and football was totally different then. So we have to compare DC with managers playing modern football. Which then leads us on to the question of when modern football as we know it began. Was it the 1960s and 1970s, with Ramsey's wingless wonders, and Brazil 1970, and 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 formations replacing the old 2-3-5 stuff that we saw in the 1950s? But in those days players were allowed a pint before a match and a crafty fag at half time. And compulsory steak and chips for every meal. Not modern football. Don Megson is out. So it must be Gerry Francis. But this was before the Premier League, and big Sky money, and massive wages, and the gulf between League 1 and the Championship was nothing like as big as it is today, so Gerry's achievements wouldn't be possible today, especially playing at Twerton. And Gerry only got us promoted once. So DC rises from 4th to 1st in my list of best managers we've had in the modern era.

The advent of the Premier League has in my opinion meant the gulf in football is about half a division lower than when we were there in the Francis era. Top half L1 is roughly comparable to lower end Division 2 as it was.

WAQ: "Just say something. Anything". DC: "Gottle of geer". Are you trying to say that DC is/was just a puppet?

Not sure you can discount previous managers records just because they achieved their success in a different era. If we do that then if GC keeps us up this season you could argue he will jump to the top of the list, as being the only on in the last decade or more who will have a fought a successful Div 1 relegation battle. GF's record will take some beating whatever era it occurred.

The Hungarian team led by Puskas became the most successful team ever in world football between 50-56 and led the world rankings with their brand of total football. Their destruction of England at Wembley being only one of many victories. If it had not been for the Hungarian revolution at that time who knows what they could have achieved . It is thought that the Dutch team of the seventies were the first team to have adopted the total football style since the Magyars.

Four unbelievably good years, that Conference season was as fun as any I’ve ever had watching Rovers (perhaps until Dover Away and the folllowing Play Off stresses) The League 2 and League 1 seasons that followed were just superb. I’m not sure how anyone who properly followed DC’s Rovers 2014-2018, could belittle the guys achievements at this club, as you say, for the sake of one poor half season.

Not a stitch on Gary Megson 3rd in all time managers is still pretty high! I can only go with what I have seen in my lifetime and I would put him a close second to Gerry Francis, whose achievements on a shoestring at Twerton were remarkable. Darrell is one of the most important managers we have had and his achievements were critical to our survival. He operated under huge pressure, but had very competitive budgets to do the job he needed to do. Gerry in the 3rd tier performed a miracle when we had nothing and then to carry it through in the 2nd tier was no less an achievement. We haven’t hit those heights since, unfortunately and it still seems a world away from reality given the money that is sloshing around at the top of league 1.

The list of best managers debate will go on and on and no one can prove anything decisively, all about opinions. If Don Megson hadn’t got promotion we’d have carried on in League 3 (as was), if Gerry hadn’t got promotion we’d have carried on in League 3 (as was).if PT hadn’t gone up we’d have carried on in League 4. If DC hadn’t got promotion we’d have been b*******. We’d have been playing WSM, Bath and all the other local non league clubs.
I don’t know if he was the best manager ever but I know he got promotion and the most important promotion at a time when we were at our lowest. Without that promotion forget about the relegation battle this season we wouldn’t have been in league 1. I’ve seen us play in all our promotion seasons except the Bert Tann one in the 50s and I know that DC was our best manager when we really needed it. And for that he has earned my gratitude and despite a bad half to the season this time he does not deserve the sniping he gets from some. Great to see the picture of him and Wael and DC looking relaxed, well deserved. UTG!

It's like saying was Lara as good as Richards. Different times, different circumstances. As you say though, DC rescued us at the time we needed it most. Didn't just have a decent season and get promoted...rescued the club from who knows what. Does that make him our best ever...impossible to say. But it does make him a bloody good manager who did great things at this club and for that, he deserves our total respect, as do all those others mentioned for their achievements.

Interestingly the coaching staff that are currently doing so well were almost entirely brought in by Darrell Clarke.
