Well, we no longer have Lines, Lockyer, Smith, Slocombe or Payne on the wage bill. With Lines & Lockyer having been two of our highest earners, a (very) conservative estimate would be that we were shelling out around £10k+ a week for these five players. How CAN’T we afford to bring in a reasonably proven striker or creative midfielder? But you forgot to mention the 7 players already signed? We dont know the balance in salary between outgoing and incoming players. The other issue ie how much has the playing budget been cut? 5,10,20,30% ? Nobody knows. JVS - Dutch 2nd tier Hare - National League Davies - Released by midtable L1 club Smith - Sheff U will be covering most of wage, if not all Leahy - Released by L2 club Little & Jaakkola are probably our highest earners of the new players, the rest will be on modest wages compared to Lines, Lockyer etc IMO. The budget cut is a good point though, and the real unknown factor in all this.

We struggled last season and I've said it before - we have only as it stands strengthened IMO one position, RB. There is nothing at the moment to suggest we will do anything other than that again this season. Can't say that I'm over impressed with the signings so far - and there are still rumours of signing another CB - bizarre. I'm not kidding myself, because we have made half a dozen signing we are any better than we were last season. The one real positive is getting shot of Payne. After GC came in our record from those 25 games was 37 pts - mid table or higher form rather than struggling. W 9 D 10 L 6. Good players already in - Little, Jaakkola from the championship with good reports, Smith a young striker from The Prem - with a good scoring record; and good experience at L1 level with Davies and Leahy. Massive clubs like Sunderland and Ipswich have signed only 1 or 2 in comparison - check if you don't believe. GC will get a couple more attacking players in but has to bide his time like those clubs mentioned above and is probably keen to offload a few ( Bennett, Mensah) to also help make those signings happen. If you compare it to beginning of last season - we'd already lost Ellis and Gaffney and only replaced them with - the one and only Stefan Payne on the last day of the window !! A PANIC BUY if we ever saw one. Some good points here, but it is dependent upon GC getting those attack minded players in. Not sure we can call Tyler Smith a Premier League striker just because he came from Sheffield Utd, although I agree he is a potentially exciting signing. Jaakkola is an unknown quantity for me. Yes, he's played in the Championship, but not very much. In fact, his experience seems based on the number of clubs he's represented around the world rather than the number of games he's played for them. But again, probably a decent signing given the likely budget available. My biggest concern for the season ahead is that, whilst 37 points from 25 games represents a finish probably around 8th, will other clubs have worked out our rather predictable style? GC has expressed a desire to play with more pace and freedom this season, which is great, because if we do then, with maybe one or two more additions we have a squad easily capable of mid table security. If we don't, I would think 18th or 19th may be the best we can hope for.

If we don't sign anyone else what does everyone think our starting XI will be at the start of the season? I'd guess GC goes with,
Jaakkola Little, Davies, Craig & Leahy Rodman, Upson, Clarke & Sercombe JCH & Nichols
Would be an 80% new back five so need to gel quickly and hit the ground running. The rest - we need the likes of Sercombe, Rodman and Nichols to significantly up their game from last season if we are to overcome last years major issue which was not enough goal threat.
I think this team would stay up but I wouldn't expect it to finish top half.

Jaakkola Little Davies Craig Leahy Rodman Ogogo Clarke Bennett Nichols Smith The good thing about the squad is the ability to switch instantly to a 3-5-2 (again, assuming same injuries)... Jaakkola Davies Kilgour Craig Little Upson Clarke Leahy Sercombe Nichols Smith Plenty of options even without THD and JCH. Of course, researching the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and lining up accordingly is no bad tactic either.

Difficult to say with the window still open and still needing some creativity, pace and width in midfield imo. But I wonder if we will see any width coming in because I wonder if GC is going to play with fast, FBs who will give the width. We have Rodman, Bennett and still have Mensah. Playing a quicker game, getting the ball into the front men quicker may be planned. Going to be interesting the next few weeks. By the time we start we should know. UTG!

Still could do with an extra first team winger to give us the option to switch formations and mix it up a bit if needed.

Need 1 Centre Back, 1 Central Midfielder and at least 1 Winger in my opinion.
Quite happy to see Andre, Menayese, Matthews (when fit), Russe, Reilly and - depending on the quality of the 2 loan strikers - maybe Moore go out on loan.

So, looks like this is the squad we will be starting the season with.
Are we happy with it, want to add some more or, get rid of some some?
I think we are top heavy in the striker department, a bit light in the mid-field area.
Hopefully a few deals will be done by the cut off point.

It seems to me that GC is aiming to have the full backs providing the width this season, with our distinct lack of traditional wingers. Of course we can still use Bennett and Rodman is wide forwards, but Leahy, Little, Hare and THD/Kelly appear to be our main wide outlets. Could be interesting and I certainly think this will play to our strengths as we have a good amount of central players to fill the midfield, as long as the full backs are able to get forward to provide good deliveries into the box for the likes of JCH and Adeboyejo.

26 is still a bigger squad than I think he wanted. Wouldn't be surprised to see another couple go out the door, particularly as he would appear to want another centre half option. Question is...who might go?
Menayaise, Russe and possibly even Moore (if JCH gets fit) might be candidates.

Menayese and Russe will presumably go out on loan, Alexis Andre, Tomlinson and Moore are part of the development squad. Taking these away that leaves us with 21 senior players and two of these have long term injuries (THD and Matthews). Can see us bringing a couple more in.

The lack of experience, pace and quality in central defence concerns me.
