This happened Sunday. We were just returning home after being out all day Sunday, and literally just as we were walking through the front door, a bloke rings the bell on the gate. He looked pretty dirty. He said he was homeless and could we give him some money. My wife said that we didn't have any cash but she'd put together a bag for him with some food, apples, bananas etc. He promptly shouted Feck Off and walked down the road. Nice.

It’s your own fault for telling Baggins where you live.

I've had similar experiences. On many occasions I've offered to buy a beggar/homeless person, a cup of tea, a sandwich, bag of chips etc but only once has the food been accepted. In purely my own experience they are much more interested in pure cash. I guess you can't pay a drug dealer with chips.

I’m thinking it was the white sausage Nobby, you probably need to hide those under the cabbages

Going back a few years, we went down town. Went in Mcdonalds for a bite to eat, after we finished my brother would do the same thing each time. He'd buy a big mac meal and give it to the first homeless person we see. We went over to this homeless person and gave it to him. The bloke looked at it, looked at us and said what's this, I don't wont it, I'd rather have the money!! My brother called him a cheeky b@stard, got the burger out of the box and rubbed it in his face!!

If I see a homeless person on the streets I always try to buy them a sandwich where possible. Only once has someone had a problem with it and asked if I had any different sandwich filling...I smiled and said "no, beggers can't be choosers" and walked off. I've also donated to the charity Shelter in the past.

It really shocked us to be honest. My little lad (eight years old) actually ran up the stairs and raided his piggy bank and came back down with five Euros to give to the bloke, but by that time he had gone. We had to explain to him that although what he wanted to do was good, the fact the man was nasty meant that he didn't deserve the five euros.

Tell your lad I've been good, and he can give me the $5 if he wants? I'm well deserving.......

Nah, the scariest would be if She Who Casts No Shadow opened the door. It's enough to frighten the spots off a Dalmatian dog !

My brother called him a cheeky b@stard, got the burger out of the box and rubbed it in his face!! That really aint anything ta be proud of pal. Many people beggin on th streets have massive mental problems. NAO report last year said; More than 3,600 rough sleepers in the government’s estimate were outside of London. Other traditional centres of rough sleeping generally recorded high rough sleeping populations, including Manchester and Bristol (which, respectively, recorded 94 and 86 rough sleepers in 2016-17). However, almost half of the increase in rough sleepers occurred in eight local authorities: Brighton and Hove, Medway, Southend-on-Sea, Oxford, Tameside, Worthing, Salford and Eastbourne. With the exception of Brighton and Hove, these are not areas historically associated with entrenched rough sleeping. Yet, between them, in 2016-17 they hosted nearly 350 rough sleepers. Most rough sleepers are male and UK nationals. In 2016-17 86% of rough sleepers were male and, across England as a whole, around 80% of rough sleepers were UK nationals. In London, however, just 40% were UK nationals, and almost 30% from EU member states. There is a high prevalence of mental illness and alcohol and drug dependency among rough sleepers. Of the 70% of rough sleepers who had a support needs assessment recorded, 47% had mental health support needs, 44% had alcohol support needs and 35% had drug support needs. In short, the growth seen since 2010 in the number of rough sleepers shows no sign of halting, and rough sleepers are now to be found in many towns and cities not previously associated with rough sleeping.

It's great that people help the homeless with food but we have to acknowledge and accept that many of them are damaged by life experiences and have mistakenly turned to alcohol and drugs therefore... If a guy has a drink and/or drugs problem a ham sandwich isn't gonna help If a guy has a mental health illness logic isn't gonna help. However we should still help wherever we can and maybe somewhere deep in their damaged minds it will be appreciated and inspire them to help themselves because that is the only real answer.

Pleased to hear it.
