The suggestion on this thread was that it was either cost cutting (which I doubt would be GC's decision) or to assist the Academy (which would be GC's decision). Cost cutting how?? They were volunteers anyway?? Was told by one of the parents that the ball boys are clothed via sponsorship, but this year the club were going to have to fund the cost of new tracksuits. Also, it cuts down on free admission for volunteers, and with the ball boys being supporters anyway, parents are now rushing to fund a season ticket for them before the cut off date at the end of the month. Not a huge saving for the club, but every little helps. I wouldn't imagine that that was the primary reason for the decision though.

When they rang the parents to let them know, I'm sure that's what they said lol. They could have easily found another sponsor, or asked the parent's to buy them, which they would have done if they liked it that much. Don't think money has anything to do with it. Expect we are just coming in line with a lot of other clubs. Most bigger clubs do it, it's good for potential player's within our academy. Fans say they want us to be more professional like other clubs, then when any changes are made, they kick off.

I know Jocky, I just find it hard to believe the club is being bashed for preparing a 16 or 18 year old for the first team in our best way especially with all these pressures and mental illness’s today etc How do you know it will be that age group please ? I would imagine it would be younger kids but if you know different then fair play. Not having a pop by the way just interested in how you know it will be of that group is all thanks in advance

The kids are being allowed to buy season tickets at the original April discount price.

I don't get this at all. If the purpose is for Academy lads to use home matches as Teaching/Learning opportunities it is surely far better to have an overview of the whole pitch from a stand. From there they can: ..see the movement on and off the ball of every player ..see the opportunities for passes which are/are not taken ..appreciate the tactics and formations of both sides ..learn about the strengths and weaknesses of players they may come up against in the future ..turn to one another and discuss what they have seen or missed ..hear from any coach who happens to be sitting with them what they should be observing
How crouching in isolation on a low stool at ground level with a view of just the immediate part of the pitch near you is a better learning experience I fail to see!
Plus, of course, there is the disengagement from one section of young fans who will no longer have fond memories of being ballboys.

Well we must be in for a cracking season if all people have to complain about is the bloody ball boys (or girls). I tend to think that if they don't have something to moan about then it is a sad road for them.

To be honest a few years ago my nephew was a ball boy and he said the language you hear from the players was terrible

So what happened to the young U18 players being ball boys? Were yesterdays ball boys from the U11? Did Coughlan get so much stick he backed down or are the young players still under training to get the required fast and furious play Coughlan said would be on offer?

I did feel a bit for the poor ball boy in front of the West stand terrace.......he was so small he couldn't throw the ball 10 yards so had to run the ball to the players nearby. Fair play to the kid for an afternoons hard work though.
