It seems to me that those who are prioritising their right to snigger like schoolchildren at archaic and outdated 'banter' just don't understand that in order for society to change for the better (as it is doing in terms of tolerance, if slowly) that we all need to change our behaviour. Even if you don't necessarily understand why a chant/comment might be hurtful or offensive, isn't it just better to not use it? It's hardly a freedom of speech issue- does it really impact that negatively if you aren't able to sing a song about gays or travellers or whatever. Or shout 'get your tits out' to a female physio? Luckily the tipping point is on the way where the sensible majority will ensure that we can bring our children to a football match without them having to listen to racist, homophobic, sexist sh**.

I agree let’s censor everything and force everyone to have the same views and opinions, because that isn’t a dangerous way of thinking of at all.

There's a reason why not one single male player in this country has come out as gay whilst still playing.
I think the main issue would be with other players rather than the fans

Completely disagree. Don't think the vast majority of players would give a flying one if they learned that a teammate was gay. But as we've seen the terraces would not be so tolerant.

Sorry to hear that tinker... You have mentioned the "fine lines" and others in response have mentioned every ones fine line is different. So wouldnt it be best for those who think saying a fine line comment would be better off not saying it, whether offence may be taken or not? Those such as okebournegas on here who resent the fact they cannot do such a thing would probably think its still PC gone mad, but the poster here is a real person who could be offended so why continue to push the boundaries? Is it just to be funny, or just to find the right side of offensive? I really dont understand some of the comments here. I don’t resent anything , I just have a difference of opinion. Also , if you wish to discuss my posts feel free to address me directly. I did, I mentioned you in the post.

Name calling is just a matter of perspective. We are called Gasheads because it was considered as an insult by the knuckle draggers south of the river (ooooooooh, naughty me for saying that!!). But rather than be offended by their insult we turned it around and made it our very own nickname...and something we are all proud of. Today's problem is the Media. They keep telling us we should be offended by this or that as though it is some heinous crime but we should all be grown up and ignore things if we don't like them instead of becoming snowflakes. (use that term now before it too becomes an offensive expression!!). Is it just me, or does anybody else become seriously offended whenever BRFC is referred to by the majority of the left wing media as "Bristol", ffs they would not dare refer to the either Manchester United and / or Manchester City as "Manchester"; I am absolutely perplexed with rage with zero tolerance, when particularly ex premier player pundits give it the "Bristol" blah blah low life intellectual rubbish.

You have obviously not played that much footy then. Players would give gay players a much harder time than fans; im not gay but have seen how they can be bullied because of it on and off the football pitch. I'm not even talking just about teammates, opposition players would use it too.
Fans love anyone who plays well. I know racists who support Arsenal and have Ian Wright & Thierry Henry as their heroes. Do you think if every gay footballer 'came out' then fans would make a point of shouting abuse at every single one? I don't.

No you didn’t address me directly , you mentioned me in a post. Give it a rest with the pedantic responses as well , it’s really not necessary.

A quick look at general chat and your one post on here tells it’s own story mate. I’m not being pedantic, I’m saying how I see it based on how you’ve written it. Perhaps you could explain your 70s outlook and an excuse for not changing to tinker here?

Not bothered if they refer to us as Bristol, as we are the oldest Bristol side of the two, but the other lot....

mwahaha "Our aim is to counteract what’s happening on our streets, to raise the profile of that to the Government, to say we’ve had enough." What a bunch of absolute tw@ts, what's happening on our streets??! Maybe theyre talking about the fact the bin collections are fortnightly now, meaning more are fly tipping on our streets getting messy! They mention the "rape gangs" I mean they're everywhere aren't they? I can't walk down to the shop without passing a rape gang, pathetic. Terrorism too, I'm not being funny but I remember the height of the IRA campaign, there was a lot more going on then than there is now. But these good Lads are just so civic minded so considerate of them to be "highlighting" these problems our society is facing. They all look so smart in their stone Island too.

I don’t need to explain my self to you or anyone else. You are also making assumptions based on my recent light hearted comments , which are in no way homophobic or offensive. For some reason you do tend to enjoy picking my posts out, do you have an issue with me personally?

It won't ever stop while certain groups are favoured and protected. Abuse must be stopped for everyone or no one. Meanwhile on Gaschat I could call you a total and utter c*** and the people complaining about homophobic abuse wouldn’t bat an eyelid. It makes me think there is an element of conscious bias or virtue signalling at work where some causes are more ‘right on’ than others. I also wonder who gave the left wing the right to decide what is the difference between abuse and harmless mockery. As a friend of mine said to me recently “morality itself is subjective”.

Why would someone have to be left wing to think it unacceptable to use homophobic chants at a football match? Also, calling someone a lady garden is your opinion, although granted it would probably offend the person you've said it too. You aren't picking something about them such as sexual orientation or skin colour to use in a derogatory way. Chanting "do you take it up the arse" to a team whose town just happens to have a large gay community is completely different.

I can't quite believe it but this utter bollocks thread has made 7 pages!
It's not as if there's anything else important to discuss like BREXIT, is there?
Although that would be moved to non-football chat in a heart beat.
