So that's how distant (presumably) that sort of music is to youngsters today. Or something. Can you imagine when you were younger a family member playing you a record from 1939 and seeing if you'd get into it coz it's sh** hot.

I was at Uni in Nottingham from '77 to '81 and it doesn't feel like that long ago at times, but as you say it's like the late 1930's were to me to the ~20 year olds of today. God I feel old now! I do think that the music has held up a bit better than the comparison you make, hasn't it? One Step Beyond.....

My daughter went to see the Stranglers a couple of weeks ago, a mere 42 years since I first saw them!

Not so sure on the strange stuff that came out of Germany that year though.
