Good to see Finland have qualified for their first major tournament. Might see our Anssi at the Euros in the summer! That also means he might finally start on Monday v Greece? Although if we wanted him to play for us on Tuesday that might not be a good thing!

Will Puddy comes in for some criticism but he played a big role in our successful Conference season. Yes he wasn't our greatest goalkeeper. Yes his first 20 minutes at Wembley was the stuff of nightmares. But at the time DC considered him a better keeper than Mildenhall.

I loved Dick Sheppard but Jim Eadie was the better keeper imo. He did command his area. In Feb/March ‘73 when he joined us I think we went 5/6 matches without conceding a goal, seemed to remember it was a big story on Saint and Greavesey on ITV. Was a sign of what he was to achieve in 73/74 when we went up. Was on the Tote the day Dick Sheppard got his head injury in the clash with Tranmere’s Eddie Loyden. Sickening, esp only 6 years after Bernard Hall’s similar injury. Was also there in Jan ‘75 when Dick made his comeback against City in Div 2. Poor Dick he had a bit of a nightmare if I remember correctly. But both very good keepers. UTG!

Although he couldn't deal with pass backs I remember the first game we played with that rule and he got caught out with that. Away somewhere I think. Brian Parkin was a fantastic goalkeeper --- possibly our best after Nigel Martyn. Brian's problems with the new back pass rule are well documented and remembered but in mitigation pitches then were a lot worse than the bowling greens they play on today. Also, defenders were learning to stroke any back passes rather than just knock it back knowing that the goalkeeper could catch it. Of course it was the same new ruling for everybody but Brian found it tougher than most to adjust.

Brian certainly was a fantastic keeper for us, losing Martyn felt like a massive blow at the time but we got a million quid and a keeper who was almost as good for us as martyn was for us and went on to win promotion so all good. The backpass rule certainly found him out though I remember one game I think it was Tranmere when he went to dive header one away and flew through the air completely missing the ball to let the striker tap it in to an empty net.

That comeback match against City was horrendous, his confidence was shot, felt so sorry for him. Great keeper though, but Jim Eadie gets my vote overall.

I think the first home game that season against Newcastle, Parkin picked up a backpass early on and Newcastle scored from the indirect free kick. It ruined him, he stopped going for crosses as well.

1st £1M keeper. Was a pretty good deal for Rovers. Brian Parkin was a fantastic replacement. He would be my favourite. Although he couldn't deal with pass backs That rule became Brians Achilles heel, not the same keeper after the rule was brought in.

If that is the gamd I tbink it was, it came off Skinner's thigh. The referees were still learning how to enforce it too.

Vitas left Rovers in 2003 Latvia qualified for their only finals in 2004. We could well have Locks & Jaaki to look out for at this season's finals, that's assuming Jaaki is still with us!

He's clearly 3rd choice as they have swapped keepers from fridays match and he is still on the bench. Given Athens is hardly jet lag territory will be play tomorrow?
