Be honest, at the start of the season if anyone has said we'd be fourth after 18 games we'd have bitten their hands off for that ! We'd have taken their entire arm after 3 games: one point and defeat at Altrincham!

sorry he's not for me. yes he has brought grit and a will to win but it is in the 5th league. Go back to his interviews in the summer and pre-season and read what he said about the football he was going to play ( a change from John Ward ) . he hasn't got anywhere near carrying that out and he's gone into his shell (bunker mentality !!). Teams like Woking , FGR play footy how it should be played so it can be done even in L5. Look at what Bournemouth and Swansea are achieving (clubs our size or even smaller) playing football using a style/philosophy which makes you applaud creativity, skill, movement and passing and of course the goals to go with it. FGR? Are you kidding me? Every single post on here you seem to wine and moan - always so negative.

As mentioned above, Torquay played attacking football at Telford and lost 4-3. A month on and they're 12th. Would rather take a 1-0 win any day of the week - not too arsed about the entertainment value, if Rovers are involved I find it very difficult to sit back, relax and appreciate any small form of entertainment on offer anyway ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I do worry about our inability to break down some teams at home (Forest Green, Dover, Dartford to an extent even though we won) and score 3 or 4 to secure a comfortable win. I think the next couple of months are important in terms of recruitment, Luton brought in Paul Benson in January last year, and a natural finisher is needed I feel if we are to compete with Barnet/the other play-off contenders. As far as other clubs not bouncing straight back which other club was averaging 5,500 to 6,000 fans at home and didn't have dire financial problems when they went down? DC probably as a budget at least twice as big as most teams in Div 2 if the board are passing on a reasonalbe proportion of the gate receipts? You would think so, but we don't have the highest budget, and a large % of what we do have is swallowed up by those players here from last year. They earn triple what the new players earn.

I don't wish to be disloyal to our beloved club, but are you saying that Bristol Rovers are the same size outfit as Swansea City, who can afford wonderful players? I'm not sure how you define size: they play in the Premiership, they sell out their 20,000 stadium every game and they won the League Cup last year! Perhaps you mean that we could be like them one day? Possibly.... I suppose we we could be like Real Madrid one day.

It was only 6 years ago we were playing them in the league and a few years before that we were also getting similar crowds to them whilst we were both in Division 3 so many "older" fans see them as a similar size of club to us. it shows what a new stadium and a bit of clever investment can do!

Yes, not long ago we were playing Southampton either, what a massive impact the Rickie deal had on both clubs. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Stayed up by the skin of their teeth. Brought in a footballing philosophy started by Roberto Martinez, built a stadium and haven't looked back since. They have also carried on with their footballing philosophy.

I fully understand your view Mark but pragmatism rules I am afraid. Last year's farce can be summed up in my eyes by our two games against Accrington. A single point against Accrington and we would have stayed up. They mugged us twice, we outplayed them at home but they took the points. We were just weak up there. At least this year we have a team that knows how to grind out results. Telford and their like know that their only hope is to stop us playing football and turn it into a battle. This year we are winning those battles. Last year's team didn't. DC knew this would happen and his team is up for it every time. I think perhaps you are being a bit of a football romantic and haven't come to the same realisation.

Perhaps the UWE will lead to similar investment for us but at the moment it's poinltess comparing us to Soton or Swansea, surely Luton's a better example for us to follow?

FGR? Are you kidding me? Every single post on here you seem to wine and moan - always so negative. It's interesting that "moderators " on here are having a go at me because I am not praising Clarke too much ?? Posters, not moderators. Genuinely can't begin to tell you how much that actually offends me. Moderators are as entitled to a view, as likely to be wrong and as open to debate as ALL other posters here. We are not above reproach. I always try to make it clear when I am moderating and almost always follow up with pm messages in most cases. I am not moderating you, nor am I seeking to censor or silence you. I am a poster here first and foremost and always will be. I moderate only when needed and for the love of Rovers and Gaschat and never just because I don't agree with well reasoned arguments. If you were fishing or on a wind up with that post, well done you got a bite.

I think we do far too much defending in games, because we cannot keep the football. This is due to the style of football, which is a "John Ward" direct approach. Nobody seems that comfortable on the ball, and kicking it long is the safe option. I just expect a bit more quality, especially as we have the money to buy it, over some of the other teams in this league.
I have a feeling that if we do bounce back up at the end of this season, the Board have to be ruthless and employ someone to progress us further, because the present team and set up will see us struggle. DC's body language makes me think he is on borrowed time, regardless of the season's outcome.

I think perhaps you are being a bit of a football romantic and haven't come to the same realisation. Fair points Stig. Maybe some romanticism - why not, Im actually a glass half full guy. I would say it's more about expectations for me. In Conf we should have massive expectations, in L2 high expectations and in L1 pretty high expectations - at least that was the Gas I supported from 1972 until around 2001. Now we have supporters who think playing crap footie in Conf is great as long as we win 1- 0 ! I will only support the team on match day and nothing else and always have. Occasionally, I have shouted rubbish at the end of a game. But once a game is over I think we all have the right to speak our minds and although we have steadied the ship I want us OUT of this league this season. I really fear what will happen to our fanbase if we struggle to get out of L5. My 7 year old - plays his footie - good player too - but he is really reluctant about going now - he only sees a struggling team which score very few goals and provide very little goalmouth action - do you blame him ? City are likely to be 3 divisions ahead of us soon !! Can you believe that !? I remember in the 70s at school and the crap you would get from sh** fans when we were just 1 division apart. So don't drop your expectations , question what the club and DC say and don't say but YES get behind the team to the max at the game !!

In my view - some have asked if Clarke should be sacked. This is a difficult one cos we don't know as always how much funds he really has. so I will say the board again should take some criticism but for me if Clarke doesn't keep us in the top 5 around end of Dec/beg of Jan then I would say goodbye and get another manager in - more experienced who doesn't like hoofball and let him use ( I presume some funds) in the January window. We have got to get the team scoring goals on a regular basis to get a buzz going. There is no buzz at Rovers at all even though we are 4th.

I agree there's no buzz but it's odd attendance's are still keeping up and we still have a massive away following, perhaps results are more important than performances. Although if we stop winning attendance's will drop off. In it seems the likely event that DC doesn't now turn to Brunt then he's going to have to bring in a replacement for Cunnington, that signing could well be crucial for both DC and our promotion push.
