I agree, we clearly cannot rely upon the public, which is why it’s a joke that Boris is relying upon people’s common sense! So what more can Boris do ? When the UK was coming towards the end of lockdown the public and all opposition parties were criticising the government demanding to be told what the plans were, demanding to be treated like adults. So he treats the public like adults informs the country of lifting of certain restrictions and what happens, Bournemouth Beach is invaded with 1/2 million people, BLM protests in London, anti mask wearing protests, illegal raves and parties. So what does Boris do he makes it compulsory to wear masks on public transport, in shops etc and still people flaunt the rules. So Boris implements fines £200 first time offenders £10k for repeat offenders. What happens he comes under more criticism for this. So I ask what more can Boris do to encourage people to wear a mask. As all things with Boris, is that it's too little too late. I think the problem is that the decision making seems to be 'like your finger and stick it in the air' - if it sticks then great, if not then let's not. We need real leadership and unfortunately I just don't see it coming from Boris. Sunak does come across well, with authority and direction. Boris is really making is up as he goes along and his performance when speaking with opposition is very poor. It was discussed on here ages ago about increasing fines for those who don't comply, now Boris has finally made something (still not high enough IMO) a bit stronger we say what else can he do? The question should be what should he have done already, IMO - we are 6 months since we first locked down and only now are we telling workers to wear masks, as an example. It's the equivalent of being in a war for 6 months and only just handing soldiers weapons now, only to then say 'well what more can he do to encourage people to have a chance?' - its not about what he finally did, but what he should have done, as pointed out by experts across the globe (and even people on here) many months ago. The last point I wanted to make was to address your point of people flocking to beaches - which is entirely correct. But here Boris has now said that we must rely upon the common sense of the public, when unfortunately they've already proven in masses that they/we don't have it.

Went out with a Girl who had one of them. It was crap. As was the relationship. Was she a member of the MGBGT community? Very inclusive. Probably.

I’ve never understood how, if the virus is (allegedly) the same for all of us there are ( in UK anyway) potentially 4 different ways on so say controlling it. There`s no way of controlling the virus, is there? They can only try to control us. And not too successfully, as of yet.

So avoid any students when you are out and about for the next year, they've been forced in to their halls of residence and surprise surprise it's a super breeding ground for our friendly Corona virus.

Would you shut down universities until a vaccine is widely available? However many months or years that maybe.

What tax are students not paying? I had a job whilst at uni and the only tax I never paid was council tax.
It’s a huge misconception of what students do/don’t pay.

I called it a few pages ago- any government serious about stopping the virus would have made it mandatory online learning only. The sodding virus is mainly transmitted via young adults so to let the student migration take place is unforgivable and yet one of Boris’s clowns was trying to defend it on Andrew Marr’s show. It boils my water how obvious this was and it’s turned into a right sh** show with students being locked into halls - I don’t blame the authorities for doing that but both they and the students should not have been put in this position.

Any steps now to 'control the virus' are purely political. Just to be seen to be doing something. I'm certain that current measures will not suffice but it would be nice if I was surprised. Effectively though what have we done? Moved last orders back by 1 hour.

Once the virus takes hold in the student community (which it sounds like it has done) then the game is lost. No amount of trite chipping away at people’s social lives is going to make up for that. Like you say, token gestures to be seen to be doing something....whilst letting capitalism run amok in the background.

Forget herd immunity, it's really population immunity.

Forget herd immunity, it's really population immunity. May well be right, Stuart. The problem for me is, what one scientist regards as being, "Honest, well-judged and eminently sane", another will see as being potentially catastrophic. Until years have passed, and the dust has settled on all of this, I don`t think anybody knows what the best way forward is. The prof`s chess analogy, zugzwang, seems about right. Whatever is decided to be done next, is gonna hurt.
