Just interested if there has been a worse start by a Rovers manager because I can't remember one.

Martin Dobson P12 W1 D2 L9 Dave Penney P13 W2 D2 L9 Phil Bater (Caretaker) P14 W1 D6 L7 Ben Garner P11 W0 D4 L7 Darrell Clarke (2013/14 Season) P8 W2 D1 L5
Not exactly an illustrious list to be on, I’m sure there’s more to add, these were just some of the “stand outs”.
The likes of Graydon and Buckle probably deserve a special mention in a thread about the bad records of Bristol Rovers managers however both actually got off to relatively decent starts.

How many went 11 games without a win though

Garner seems to have won that one then!
If he doesn't win either of the next two home games then I can't see where he'll get a win in his first twenty matches! Pretty depressing!

But hang on, he has to get 4 draws and a win in 3 games- that.’s it then. Jesus wept. A manager with a worse record than Phil Bater to follow the man who got us to 4th. Absolutely classic Bristol Rovers

Wasn't Penny sacked after his 13 Games? We obviously had higher standards back in those days!

I think you have to add context to this too. Garner inherited a team that was flying, he should have been able to see what was needed to maintain what is working, some of those other managers had a much tougher gig, like, for example, DC starting in the conference at the clubs lowest ever ebb with the crowd on his back. Garner has been backed by the board and the fans until now, but at some point that will change unless he turns a corner soon.

His record is made all the more stark by the fact he inherited a winning team and yet has a worse record than the poor sod who inherited Graydon’s shambles. It’s unreal.

Wasn't Penny sacked after his 13 Games? We obviously had higher standards back in those days! But the difference is the Board at the time felt Penney had to be sacked or we would never have had time to claw our way out of relegation trouble. Oops. This season we can play as badly as we have for the rest of the season, and we almost certainly are still going to be safe. If we had started off under BG in about 15th place, we'd now be knocking on Southend's door and joining them in the relegation zone.

His had a shocking start. Not quite as bad as that though, as he was not in charge for all of the games. He said himself when he came back, he could not concentrate properly, before he left. So who knows how long things were effecting him for. Hopefully he can turn it around. Otherwise it will cost us more money and another manager will be stuck with a lot of player's, that he might not have picked.

He's certainly been backed in the window though. Player's are coming back. If we have not improved after the next few weeks, then he will have to go.

Think we will dodge a big relegation bullet this season. If we weren't in the position we were in when Garner took over or if it wasn't for at least two teams more sh** than us would be doomed!!

Wasn't Penny sacked after his 13 Games? Didn’t we have a caretaker between Trollope and Penney (Patterson, Paterson or Pattinson, something like that), who lost 5 straight? Probably lost his memory and his car keys as well. Would’ve lost the Elgin Marbles if he’d been in charge of them!

Just maybe some of the blame lays at players door, where did the fight and passion shown at lincoln and ipswich go to? where was the aggression in midfield yesterday and over the last month, to many pretty boys and not enough sinclairs, give garner the summer and see what happens in august, if we are still poor come september then bye bye, just my view.

I agree about Garner needing only to tweak our winning team, but it seems he favours the Pep philosophy of a high pressing deep midfield and a prodding and probing attacking midfield of skilful ballplayers to the Coughlan/Wilder aggressive high pressing game with wingbacks doing all the running, a style of play that eliminates wingers, making it very unpopular with the "proper football" fanatics. But what is proper football exactly? Like everything else in life, football evolves. Pep has led the way in recent years but Klopp has taken it a step further with his high press across the park, wingbacks who can cross the ball with effortless precision, including from one flank to the other, and, most importantly, a lethal and highly skilful front three who can drop back and win the ball. It's taken Klopp four seasons to mould his team and tactics. Much as I admire Pep's football style, it does tend to get bogged down in incessant tippy tappy when confronting parked buses. Klopp's style is both flexible and entertaining, and definitely the way to go. It's just that we could be languishing back in non-league by the time he's found the right players to do it and moulded his team :-). We need to beat Tranmere to put a bit more sky between us and them before I'll say give him until Christmas. I've seen bigger gaps clawed back, but having said that, I have this gut feeling he'll succeed.
