Hi everyone, I hope this okay to post here, moderators please move or delete if you need to. I have posted this message previously on the gasheads page, but have been told I should head here for extra info. I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255). Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years. We are looking for the music that Bristol Rovers have run out to, for as many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons Bristol Rovers ran out to this. Any help you can give us to piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would be hugely appreciated. We've been in contact with former pitchside announcer Nick Day, who has informed us that major tune over the last 25 years has been the Rocky theme, Gonna Fly Now. Can anyone remember which was often played before Nick's time? you are able to remember roughly which seasons the tracks were used in that is very helpful. If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic. I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the tannoy system as the players enter the field. If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the project. Cheers Joe Headland

The Rocky theme has been used as far back as 1990 and I don't recall us using many others.
I have some vague recollection that we may have used Chumbawumba for a handful of games possibly around 2007?

We used the pirates of the Caribbean theme when Buckle was in charge, about 2011....
I remember it being about as popular as Buckle himself....

Hmm, it was always Gonna Fly Now until 1997. Then we signed Barry Hayles, who scored three in three and looked unstoppable. At the time we had a thriving internet discussion group called the gas list administered by Mo Bell, the membership included regular fans and Rovers match day volunteers and board members. Anyway we were discussing a chant for Barry and I remarked that the current chart song epitomised him....He gets knocked down but he gets up again... also using another part of the song to illustrate ... he scores a headed goal, he scores a tap-in goal, he scores a left foot goal, he scores a right foot goal etc....it got a few people agreeing that it was fitting for him. Anyway a couple of weeks after that discussion someone responsible for the run out music gave that one a whirl. As per usual it divided the fanbase, some embraced the change, others felt there was no need to ditch Rocky as it had served as the run out song when Gerry got us promoted etc. I remember a few fans objection to Tubthumping was because of the politics of the band who sang it!! Anyway it served as our runout song until Barry was sold, and maybe continued a bit longer with Jason Roberts assuming Bazza’s mantle but there was a steadily growing call to return to Rocky which we did for several years until we had at least two seasons of running out to Pirates of the Caribbean. I can’t be certain as to the years we adopted this one as unlike the Chumbawumba one I do not know what the catalyst was for the change

Didn't they play Goodnight Irene for a bit too before returning it to its pre match slot or have I imagined that?

I have been reliably informed that due to our current position both on and off the pitch, our run out music for the remainder of the season will be - Monty Pythons Flying Circus.

Didn't we run out to Also Sprach Zarathustra for a bit in the late 90s (or did I imagine it?). Yes that definitely rings a bell (sorry). Some others we have used in the past include Runaway when we were at Twerton. Right here, right now..Fat boy slim. Kashmir..Led Zepplin. I'm sure i can remember Liquidator for a time at Eastville.

We switched to Pirates of Carribbean theme as it won a poll conducted by the woman (Kirsty?) who would always make mistakes when updating the old website back in Higgs' day. Remember it as we were stuck with the poll on the home page for a long time after it ended.

I remember having to get up half an hour before I went to bed and then worked 9 hours at Mill. Tell the kids that and they won’t believe you. I heard City fans moaning the other week about using Seven Nation Army. Bloody cracking tune.

Not run out music but we used to have Del Shannon, Runaway. Always played in the build up pre kick off back in the Twerton Park days. Fairly sure it got played every week as we got in the habit of not losing so became a bit of a superstition to always play it. No doubt someone can confirm this
