...but doesn’t this pandemic put into context how frivolous an activity sport is?
I’ve been set on this train of thought by a post I saw on a forum praising the response from scientists across the world already making strides in identifying what this virus is and how we can get a vaccine out there. These scientists who are working to save humanity are undoubtedly paid a fraction of that of a professional footballer or an investment banker.
Not so much applicable to Rovers but at the premier league level it does make me think about how mad it is that we pay footballers ridiculous sums of money and yet, while society falls apart, it is football that gets canned first because it is so non-essential to the way we live our lives. It is only sport. Sure we all miss it but it really is not as important as all the sums of money sloshing around at the top end of the game make it seem.
I appreciate the counter argument is that the money comes primarily from TV, no-one wants to pay to watch a scientist develop a vaccine live and I get that. And I know life is not fair. But it still feels “bad” that those saving humanity are not remunerated anywhere near as well as the man who can kick a ball the best.

I'd say your opinion chimes with many many people gas365!
We all know why the likes of elite footballers and actors/actresses earn such obscene amount of money as you said in your post, and so to a certain extent we can't argue with it. Yet it still doesn't make it any less unpalatable to us lowly citizens, especially those that work in life saving jobs, or even people like Adam Tutton from the BRCT that do incredible work for the community.

It’s not an unpopular opinion, many including me would agree with you, it’s just an idealistic one. We’d all like Nurses, Doctors, Scientists, Firemen, Paramedics to get paid more than they do because they do jobs that have a profound affect on the lives of many but don’t get nearly the recognition they should for it. They all have to rely on Government support as there isn’t anyone else willing to pay their wages.
Football is an entertainment industry with an enormous appeal. It rakes in billions because so many people engage with it and are willing to spend their earnings on it. Footballers, TV bosses, Owners at the top get to line their pockets on the profits and the further down you go, the less money there is to go around. It’s sad, but it’s just the way life works.

The Football Finance Dept at Liverpool University were reporting on Friday that the Premier League are sat on a cash pile of £1,500,000,000. Sport Relief managed to raise 2.6% of that figure on Friday evening. The poor old presenter Gary Lineker still struggles on with a nett worth of just £30,000,000.

Yeah, it’s in line with the whole idea of capitalism being a meritocracy and I agree with that to an extent. My issue with “the system” is that causes that deserve the most merit (imo) don’t earn the most money and it’s the industries that earn money hand over fist that is able to remunerate it’s participants the best. There is no answer or resolution to it and it can be filed neatly away under “life’s not fair” but it still sucks. Like Chris Packham said in his eulogy about Turing (paraphrasing) “it won’t be the actors and footballers who solve the climate crisis, it will be the scientists”, they and the healthcare professionals are who we turn to when the country is on it’s knees. It’s all arse about tit really, but that’s the way it goes I guess.

It’s so crazy. I will be seriously watered off with the whole lot if the premier league doesn’t have a whip round to help support the other football league clubs. The amount of money football is obscene. The biggest scandal is how much the agents get paid. Okay Messi earns a crapload because he’s the premier footballer, fair enough. But what about Mino Raiola- what does he contribute in the grand scheme of things and yet he takes home 40 odd million of Pogba’s transfer. Compare that to the scientists who are trying to create a vaccine for this pandemic. Ridiculous.

If you're interested, I highly recommend the podcast "The Price Of Football" it's hosted by Kevin Day and Kieron Maguire from Liverpool University. Some of the details they discuss about football finances boggle the mind!

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

Well he does come from Glenbuck so if he didn't have footy he would probably have died (from boredom or the cold)

Moran (Irish: Ó Móráin) is a modern Irish surname and derived from membership of a medieval dynastic sept. The name means a descendant of Mórán. “Mor” in Gaelic translates as big or great and “an” as the prefix the. Morans were a respected sept of the Uí Fiachrach dynasty in the western counties of Mayo and Sligo.

Is it just me, or has everyone lost the plot.... I saw a group of undertakers wandering around my local cemetery. They'd lost the plot too.
