Don megson player-coach at rovers 1971 about 36 years old, played in a win against a higher division team under lights in the league cup watched by 12 year old me. Thing is i never really understood that much about class players from top class football until i watched don in action. Every pass found a rovers player, every tackle was perfectly timed and he scored with a scorching volley. I remember thinking what the hell was he like at his peak? When he was appointed manager i remember wishing he was was still playing.

Ricky lambert vs Southend - think he scored 4 that game.
I can remember Anthony Pilkington playing for Huddersfeild or stockport? absolutely tore us apart that day! Aaron Lescott and Joe Jacobson couldn't cope.

For me Ellis Harrison almost every time he came on as substitute. He was the ultimate supersub, I can't think of another player who could have such an influence coming on as sub. Halifax away is one game that sticks in my mind where we were two down and heading for a big defeat and slipping a couple of places. Ellis came on and ran their defense ragged and we came away with a point and were back in the promotion race.

Lambo when he got 4 past Southend. Think he got taken off after getting his 4th - save Southend more of a battering.
Randall v Soton in the cup at Eastville also springs to mind.

Steve Kindon playing for Wolves against us at Eastville when they hammered us 1-5. I spoke to him about that performance several years ago and although it has always stayed with me he couldn't remember it at all. Maybe it shows how crap we were . Anyway how about remembering a brilliant Gas performer ! There must've been one of those

Oh and when we played West brom in last 16 of the fa cup at the mem a few years ago and got hammered in awful conditions from memory.. West brom had a big striker possibly on loan to them called Miller?? He was a right handful and absolutely tore us apart from what I remember I think you mean FA Cup QF - but there was nothing awful about the conditions - just that kick off was about 6pm on a Sunday - oh and that Miller was too good that night.

The title of the thread doesn't mention Gas performer but none have been as good as Kindon's.

Ishmael Miller for West Bromwich Albion in the FA cup quarter final. That day he was unplayable. He looked quick, strong, powerful and bagged a hat trick. I thought he would go on to be a star. Never really made it after that though.

Joe Payne (Luton) 1936, he scored just the 10 goals against us that day. I wonder if if he got man of the match? Edit: I didn’t see it by the way, but Oldie said Joe was awesome that day.

Tommy Wright Newcastle keeper at Twerton. Even Keegan said it was the best keeping performance he had ever seen.
It easily could have been 6 or 7 if it had not been for him and the woodwork.

Speaking of unbelievable goalkeeping performances, has anyone mentioned Mark Cousins for Dagenham in THAT game? We had more than 30 shots on goal in that game!

Just looked it up.. He was called ishmail Miller and scored a hat trick against us and they beat us 5-1..ive done us a disservice, it was the fa cup quarter final in 2008 and not the last 16. I was positive Ishmael Miller would go on to play for England after his spell at West Brom in the Championship and that performance against us. He made our defence look like dicks! He got injured not long after his first Premier League appearance and was never the same again. Joe Jacobson had a mare that night, that helped Miller, plus his first goal was offside.

Jimmy Melia, formerly of Liverpool and England, playing for Aldershot when they beat Rovers in the cup at Eastville in 1970. He totally controlled the game without, it seemed, moving out of the centre circle.

Justin Skinner against West Ham, why oh why couldn't he do that even a bit more often.
"Tame the Bull" Twentyman v Wolves.
Andy Tilson, whenever he played.
Against us, Paul Walsh at Fratton Park (in 1991?). Guy Whittingham got the goals but it was Walsh who tore us apart to create them.

A Portuguese winger called Dominguez for Birmingham in the early 90s.
Also remember Matt elliott being a rock for oxford. Collymore single handedly destroyed us for Southend.
Apart from those mentioned for us, I thought Stewart was immense at Wembley in 95 plus Hayles’ debut v Plymouth as a lesson in how to explode onto the scene
