"The FTSE 100 is dominated by banking and energy companies, which have performed relatively well, the latter sharply boosted by higher oil and gas prices. And overall, the bulk of the money earned by companies on the index comes from overseas: earnings which rise in value when the pound falls against the dollar." It's a bit more nuanced than that. It depends on what funds they are invested in and how those funds are then sub-invested. I suspect the average man in the street won't really notice much, it's the big investor who probably has a balanced portfolio anyway. Don't forget, the real gain is only realised when they cash it in otherwise it's hypothetical to us ordinary folk and the benefit of a greater pension pot is converted into an annuity with prevailing annuity rates dependant on other factors, such as interest rates. |
