I’m sure Almondsbury has its quota of resident country Foxes without any of the feral Bristol urbanites having to make their way there. I should imagine that, when they’re not being chased by strange humans in fancy Dress on horseback, the resident country Foxes will relish the opportunity to have a nocturnal dump on the smooth, lush cultivated greensward to be found at The Colony. I think I might join them one evening, just for the experience. Release the hounds What a spiffgingly super idea. Tally Ho

Back to the TG development, I had another look yesterday evening and the top dressing is in the process of being laid. It was the black gritty stuff in a huge pile where the old changing rooms are. If that is indeed the top surface then the grass seed should be on course to be sewn by the end of the month, because the surface will have to be levelled, allowed to settle etc etc.

Can anybody understand what the material is for being laid on the ground above the drainage and underneath the top soil? Weed control or something??

It does a few things: 1 Weed suppression 2 allows water through to the lower drainage level 3 stops the top surface sinking and mixing with the bottom surface, and being carried into the drainage channels.

There is a lot of work going on at the site with heavy plant around. They seem to have raised the level of the pitches by around a metre to the right of the entrance with probably half of that being this dark coloured 'sand grit' dressing. Also noticed that they have put in electric cabling along the side of the pitches in five places presumably for floodlight stanchions. I think the training ground is going to look pretty impressive when its finished - fair play to the owner/club.

It sounds to me we're doing the full works, with just part 1 due for completion this summer, we must be looking at the £3/4m overall project cost Hamer mentioned when the ALQ's originally bought the land? impressive stuff if that's the case.

Not sure if I can handle the fact that we're building something not held down by guy ropes. It's great news, but I can't process it. I'm used to the hope, the expectation, the delays and then the crushing disappointment. It's the natural way of things, and I've got so used to it, that I actually quite like it. This is a whole new experience for me. I'm struggling.
