Wigan Athletic … into Administration.
I think now there will be many many more !
We are very lucky to have our man in charge - safeguarding our club.

It will be interesting to see if the EFL sticks to it's rule of handing 12 point deductions to any team that goes into administration.
Normally, it's a punishment to try and prevent clubs from being poorly run however it's hardly Wigan's fault that they've got championship wages to pay but no revenue coming in.
Glad we aren't facing a similar predicament, thanks Wael!

Radio Stoke full of Stoke's defeat at Wigan last night.Lose against Barnsley Sat and they could well be coming to the Mem.Not easy for Wigan players last night knowing this but they still stuffed Stoke. Wigan had Dave Whelan mastermind their rise to the Prem ,new stadium etc.Lovely modest man who put his money into his beloved club but was dealt a life changing blow when he used an allegedly offensive term about a Chinese Friend and was crucified by the 'Fluffy Bunny 'Brigade.

Chances looking good for you for at least one 'home' match' next season - unless of course the match is played behind closed doors.

I would like to think normal rules regarding points deductions will not apply given the current pandemic and financial uncertainty of many clubs.
Plus Wigan are the most in form team in the championship atm, it would be a shame to see their hard word since the start of 2020 all be undone.

Crewe too only 40 minutes away If league 2 had carried on I’d of fancied Vale gaining a place and competing in the play offs. I’ve got then listed for automatic promotion next season. Ever since the new owners up there have come in they seem to have turned a corner and the supporters are going back to them.

As a result of Wigan Athletic confirming they have entered into administration, the Club will be subject to a 12-point deduction and, in accordance with EFL Regulations, the timing of the sporting sanction can only be determined once final league placings in the Championship are determined. www.efl.com/news/2020/july/efl-statement-wigan-athletic

EFL announce 12 point reduction - fine tuning who they promote and relegate yet again !! Personally I think that's disgraceful. Playing god and wilfully contributing to a demise of a club that does a lot of good work in the community. If Wigan had overspent beyond their means or their owners had done a runner then fair enough, but they had no control of the circumstances that meant them getting no ticket or catering revenue which resulted in them being in financial trouble.

The owners did do a runner as the new owners only took over last month? It's a difficult one as all the other Championship clubs have avoided going into Admin.

Axe I would not be surprised if a whole host of clubs announce now - try and get the deduction this season especially if it doesn't affect a final position that would see them relegated. If it spreads to L1 and L2 as again I think it will we could find half a dozen or so teams start on minus figures - absolute debacle !!

They sold the club yes, I meant leaving the club in a lot of debt and having no more day to day involvement in it, as some other clubs in the EFL have experienced. Surprised the new owners have resorted to administration so readily after only taking the club over a few weeks ago. Don't they know that relegation from the Championship would vastly de-value their new asset?

If they get relegated, the 12 points deduction will start next season. If they stay up then the 12 points deduction comes off this season.

I'm not sure owners will want to hand over control of their clubs over to administrators who will asset strip the company to pay back it's creditors unless the situation is truly dire. Unfortunately there will be more clubs finding themselves in the same boat as Wigan I expect going forwards.

I don't think there's anything "allegedly offensive" about calling Vincent Tan a chink, making racial slurs against Chinese restauranteurs, or anti-Semitic comments about businessmen who helped him amass his wealth. www.theguardian.com/football/2014/dec/05/dave-whelan-wigan-chinese-chingalings

What I don't understand is the EFL granted the take over 4 weeks ago. Yet another case of their fit and proper test not actually working!

Dave Whelan was a great benefactor to Wigan Athletic. I can think of a number of adjectives to describe him but "modest" would not be one of them.

Wigan aren't really a Championship club. It's only because of huge bankrolling by Whelan that they achieved success. Once the results dropped and relegation occurred their 17,000 Prem crowds soon dropped. They don't get 10000 now, even though there's still been a lot invested in them and they are in the Championship.
If they go down and struggle in L1, rather than having the money to buy their way to promotion, I doubt they'll get much over 5000.
They're a league 2 side at best without massive financial assistance.
