I may live to regret this but personally I think Garner is going to be a success.... I have nothing to base that on other than gut feel and the support that I read in the press from others at different clubs etc, but I just have the feeling.... He came in at a time with a team that had been well drilled to play a specific style of football that was effective but not pretty. It was completely different to how Garner wants to play. He didn’t have the players to play in the way he wanted and he had some that didn’t want to play in his new way - the result was the poor form we saw.... (Not forgetting the personal issues he was going through too at the time) He recruited in Jan with a view for this coming season and he’ll bolster that in this transfer window. He is supposedly a fantastic coach and the players he’s bought so far are in that ‘potential, talent, coachable’ space. The Jan players now have also now had 6 months to get used to the new surroundings and we have Hare returning which I think will make a difference. I do think he’ll buy a little bit of experience to balance things out but the core group will be similar to what we had when first in the conference - young, hungry, wanting to improve and with a point to prove. We may not see an amazing level of consistency initially but I do think he and the team will come good.... Building a decent training ground etc all points to putting the right foundations in place to support this... I really do think we’ll be a higher performing team this year with one eye on promotion maybe next year with a team capable of holding their own in the championship with a decent LG 1 season followed by a LG 1 promotion season and that experience behind them.. Personally I think we should cut him some slack, get behind him and support him and see how the season pans out.... I know exactly what you mean, I'll admit after the Shrewsbury & Southend games that optimism had begun to fade but post Sunderland I thought it had started to come together. I'm still very much in the camp that he'll come good, that may turn out to be blind optimism but I'm prepared to give him a good part of the new season to prove he can cut it But who did the players turn up for v Sunderland, a manager they totally failed to turn up for in the previous game at Southend or for TC's 600th game? The big worry for me is what good experienced players are going to sign for him this summer, unless we over pay to get them to sign. Who would one of us sign for if we were players the likes of Steve Evans & Darren Ferguson or a complete unknown in BG, who may not last 'til January if he gets off to a bad start? If he can't get any decent experienced players to sign for us then he's going to have even bigger problems next season than last season, I sense it's going to be a long summer unless we make a couple of good signings soon. Sign 3 or 4 experienced players like Ehmer, to replace Sercs, OC & TC and we may be OK, start next season with just youngsters and BG won't survive that long. If Maher gets the Southend job it'll be interesting to see who gets the coach's job.

I think Wael has proved this week that he's a gambler a risk taker and investing in BG is another huge risk. Young, inexperienced with a very bad start. The opposite of GC who was very successful during his short time as manager. Are we going to get a million passes with no end product? God I hope not. We want results and ultimately that's what it comes down to, not endless coaching, ideology and continued losses.

I'm usually one who would accept any6 type of performance that gets a win, but would be nice to actually see some attractive attacking passing football with proper wingers. In a word, to enjoy 90 mins rather than only after 90 mins.

Can you think of a manager that has come in to a team doing so well and then done so badly for a prolonged period of time when they have come in as manager, yet ended up being a success managing at that club? At least this break will give Garner a 2nd chance, or maybe 3rd chance depending on how you look at it! How about a guy called Alex Ferguson? He did okay as I recall, after a rocky start... 😉 Yes he was saved by Lee Martin in the 1990 Cup Final who later played for the Gas

Mate, if he turns out to be crap I will be on here complaining about him along with everyone else How long will you accept him being crap before you decide he is crap? Seeing as how he's had some of a season to bed in and the luxury of an extended break I'm going to say 9 games, 6 doesn't seem enough and 12 is mid season so yeah an odd number but thats the number

Well, in my first management job in marble racing i got off to a very rocky start with shocking performances ,but by the second half of my first season performances had improved dramatically and i finished the season with some very respectable performances and a healthy league position, this was followed by top 4 finishes in the next two seasons and have started this season with a good solid performance, so my message is have faith Gas eds,we will strike it lucky with big Ben ,good times are ahead, up the Rovers!

I was at Southend Utd the last away game we played, we were appalling, we only beat Sunderland the following Tuesday because somebody must have told him to go back to the Coughlan way of playing. He will soon overtake Martin Dobsons record and will be shown the door within the first 5 games of whenever the new season starts. Next job, managing a women's football team, more scientific and analytical for him, no senior pros telling him to go and do one at half time and how would he know having never played the game as a pro.

I’m going to turn this into the Ben Garner out of his depth obsessed thread. Be careful. That's the sort of thread they have on One Turd. Slippery slopes, and all that.

Amazes me the amount of apologising people make for the guy.
He’s had so many breaks it’s unreal.
And suddenly because he did well in one game -One game - You’re a negative poster allegedly if you slightly hint at him being the incompetent, hopeless manager that he so clearly is.
Wael has done so much for us of late, with the hint of so much on the horizon to come. It would be such a waste for us to chuck this opportunity to push forward out of the window like we did the season just gone.
I can forgive one mistake in appointing him, but to keep going with him into another season, and then to keep persisting with him when this inevitably falls apart again, is something I cannot forgive. He needs to go for us to progress again.
Good coach maybe, manager he is not. You only have to look at some of the feedback coming from players moving on from the gas and read between the lines to see that.

He's not even managed for half a season, bored of reading these posts, they're for the people who love to wallow in depression. Who knows, maybe he'll be the worst we've ever seen but at least give the guy a half season with the team he produces before we start slagging him off Not at all. It's for those that can face the reality of where we currently are. I'm guessing you can't think of anyone? I'm genuinely interested if someone can come up with an answer or a few answers, might give me something to cling on to! Your answer, support the Gas whoever’s manager if you are a true Gashead. This virus has stalled football for us lower leagues now let’s start afresh and hope we will all soon be on the terraces supporting BG and the lads.UTG

Martin Dobson was totally useless as a Rovers manager sacked after 1 win in 12 - 8.3% win rate. BG talks the talk - now he has to deliver - his record to date is totally abysmal. Personally I'd give him another 12 games or so to deliver a reasonable return - maybe a 40% win rate. Wasn't Dobsonas as a bloke a complete and utter asshole in everything he did? He completely alienated the players in every possible way as if he was desperate to get fired. I don't sense that BG is unpopular, in fact players have gone out of their way to praise his training methods. Just sayin.

Another genuine question...... would people rather be proved right and we struggle next season or see us do well and congratulate BG ? Anyone who would rather be proved right isn't a true gashead. We may not have the same ideas to achieve our goals, but surely we all want the same results?

It could mean quite the opposite.

All I'm saying is I saw signs that something was clicking in the way we played. If that was only because it was TC's 600th game then I am sure that no-one would disagree that means the players are a disgrace. As for the fact he's had a long break, so he has. However it's been of no use to him as a coach because he hasn't been able to work with the players since the last week in March. I'd say he's been very unfortunate.

Not aimed at you no, as I’ve seen many state similar opinions outside of this thread. Even the worst of teams pull a surprise result out of the hat every now and then. Under GC when we were charging up the league, we were the first team to lose to Bolton. Southend were beating us 2-0 at half time before we managed to turn it around. Neither meant our opposition had turned the corner - their results following indicated that certainly wasnt the case - we had an off day. You’d describe those results as an outlier. I honestly don’t think we’d turned the corner against Sunderland, we’d had a good day and Sunderland had a bad after many congested fixtures. Regards to comments on breaks I didn’t mean the break in time, I meant the leeway many supporters give him for two dire runs, once before his unfortunate circumstances required him to take an actual break and also after when the season abruptly ended.
