Christ what a silly thread, back to back promotions and kept us up comfortably for all seasons but the last... How was the guy hopeless? We failed with recruitment, replacing non league/league 2 players that were not getting any better.

Which is all very true and I thought we had unearthed a diamond and was delighted when he signed that 4 year deal. BUT, it turned out that L1 was beyond his capabilities, and when he lost the core of theside he was unable to replace them and signed some expensive duds on last ngcontracts. Those are facts. I doubt that any of the happy clappers were sorry when he went, unless they wanted relegation, for that’s where we were headed. I will for ever be grateful to DC for what he did, but he had reached the end of the line.

I was saying that people keep saying these things things in posts and that I disagreed with them

I wouldn’t say he was clueless or hopeless. But he did lose his way and regardless of how you dress losing Taylor, Bodin and Harrison he still left us with a spent playing budget of £2.6m that was only good enough to see us bottom of the league, so it’s not as if the owners didn’t back him to replace those players. He just spent it on duds like Bennett and Payne. DC quite simply ran his course with us, he was frustrated, tired and his ideas and philosophy no longer worked for the players he signed. I agree with this and the opening post. DC was brilliant for us with back to back promotions, then gave us mid table finishes in league 1 then didn’t find players as good as the ones that hed found and then lost there after and it started to go pear shaped. You can’t expect any manager to consistently build a promotion winning side year after year on a small budget whilst losing his best players and after 4 brilliant seasons he had a bad half of one. Fair enough. The squad that won those promotions might well have gone on to a third promotion if they hadn’t been sold or got too old Thing is that’s football , clubs go through cycles and that manager and squad got to the end of theirs. If that squad had all been a year younger in the conference season and lansdown/ Taylor hadn’t f**ked us over we might of made the play offs that season maybe even gone on to be the first English club to ever win triple back to backs. If my uncle was my Aunty . It’s history now

He had a great few seasons, lost momentum, couldn’t buy a goal. Eventually it all turned into a bag of smashedassholes Happy days though, that I will take to my grave. Thanks DC. We go again.

At least he won games in his tenure. Which the current one seems incapable of doing
This one may start winning when we are back in the conference and still have the backing of some.on here

DC was the greatest manager this club has had to date in my oppinion. He was far from hopeless in league 1, but I think he had reached the end of the line when he left .Though I think like us he became frustrated with the lack of progress off the pitch. Had we not lost Taylor I am sure we would have reached the playoffs. Although having said that had Coughlan stayed I think we would have been promoted this season, but that's for another debate. sorry but he doesn’t come close to Gerry Francis, he won the league spending about 90k, then 12th position in the now championship!

Were you on here saying that league one was beyond his capabilities when we were pushing for a play off spot before Taylor's departure? You would have had the foresight of Nostradamus if you had come out with that. It took him *three* seasons to really start to lose his grip, due to some poor signings and a change in approach, but you can't take those two previous seasons off him where he showed he was more than capable of holding his own, if not quite consistent enough to challenge for promotion. Christ, give me DC's sort of 'under-achievement' at league one level than Garner's any day of the week. In fact I think it's heartbreakingly poor that DC was promised better facilities after two promotions and yet it looks like Mr 0.7ppg will be the recipient of the improved infrastructure not the man who got this club off it's knees on the pitch. Typical Rovers really.

The only time i was ever dubious about D/Cs appointment was when he got the job in the first place. At the time it seemed that it was the typical no2 scenario who thought he could do better than his boss and perhaps undermined J/W . I hasten to add i am not ITK and this is just an impression i got at the time . Once we were relegated i doubt any other manager would have got us back up first time as he quickly drummed into players and fans that unless we accepted our lot and adapted to life in the national league we were in for a big shock. He was certainly the right man for the job at that time and the rest is history. Fast forward a couple of years and we consolidated our league 1 status before both D/C and the team started to struggle and in the end D/C seemed to run out of solutions and both his and the teams confidence seemed to drain away, D/C cutting a very frustrated figure come the end ,frustrated with the club, team ,and his own failure to find the solution to our predicament. It may be coincidence but D/C and the teams performances were never the same following his graduation up the coaching ladder and it is my belief he got to bogged down in clever theory instead of acting from his gut feeling which had got him this far, in the end he couldn't see the wood for the trees. I am sure if a month off could have been arranged to clear his head, he would have come back refreshed and back to his old self , shame the powers that be could not see that the man needed a break ,and acted accordingly. In conclusion D/C was not a failure at league 1 level , but in the end ,failing just having a break, he needed to go for his own sanity and our survival in league 1, but he will always be held in the highest regard by me and i am sure many others. That’s the best post I’ve read all year. Completely agree. The only thing missing is that, to his credit, DC recognised the need for a defensive coach and brought in Coughlan which had the desired effect.

It's was a repeat of the same scenario with Trollope, DC was found wanting when he came to rebuilding the promotion side, PT went on to prove he wasn't up to L1 management, there's nothing to suggest DC will do any better, L2/lower L1 could be is level as that's where he's spent all his career in football. As far as "heartbreaking" BG just got lucky Wael came into some money, he's still got to prove he can benefit from his slice of luck, DC could well still be our manager if he hadn't replaced Harrison with the likes of Payne.

Well I suppose there’s not much else to talk about at the moment, close season and all that and gas and electricity is right to have it up here. Let’s face it we’ll never agree over the totality of DCs time with us, and it’s a football forum so pretty rare to get total agreement but DC earns his respect on here by being our most important manager when we really needed it. To follow that up with another promotion to deliver us back to our historical position, imo, meant he should be rated as one of our best managers. Whether he was as good as Tann (for longevity) or Francis (for pure achievement under difficult circumstances) is another matter, we'll all have our opinions but DC was the right manager for us at the right time. Perhaps had he been manager now with Widdrington looking to use his contacts and with infrastructure stuff looking better it might have turned out better. But it hasn’t and he’s moved on so good luck to all concerned. But he wasn’t hopeless in L1 he just had a disastrous recruitment Summer in 2018 which effectively did for him. Just goes to show if Widdrington gets it right we may be ok, depending on other factors but if the recruitment is poor we’re going to struggle.

I disagree. PT had LL holding his hand, scouting, signing players as well as being an influence on the training ground. He was found wanting once LL had left, there was a total lack of discipline in the squad too, something that Dave Penney couldn't address when he came in, it was a toxic combination. DC was his own man all the way through and 2 mid table finishes in L1 suggests he is more than capable. There are 3 signings that contributed to his demise IMO. Tom Nichols being signed and not working, but then not sending him out on loan in season 2 to regain some confidence, Kyle Bennett being an absolute failure and Stefan Payne being utter crap and to think we released Rory Gaffney for him too.

IMO, Not Hopeless, he rode the crest of emotion for a couple of seasons after going into & back out of the conference, he over played his hand of importance with WAQ and once he realised his star was no longer in the ascendancy, he was offski. DC's loss, via the PE Teacher, has eventually turned out to BGs gain, "long live the king".

Don’t think we actually “released” Gaffney as such. Salford made a bid for him- allegedly £70k so he was allowed to leave. Walsall fans think he’s cr@p !

You are quite right sir, prior to g/c coming on board we were leaking goals for fun and had one of the ,if not the ,worst goals conceded records in the league.

Typical Rovers really. I believe I wrote that I thought we had unearthed a diamond and was delighted DC signed a long term contract. So I don’t think I doubted his ability to manage at L1 level, nor did I make any strange claim to be Nostradamus. I quite agree that it took 2 seasons for him to be found out. Because at the beginning of that 3rd L1 season it became apparent he was unable to rebuild the team, with a series of disastrous signings that started mid waythrough the 2nd L1 season. The 3rd season was a disaster, culminating with his departure on the eve of the Sunderland away game on 16th December. I went to that, and whilst we narrowly lost, the performance was much improved and you could see what GC was about. I’ve never been so cold at a football match, even in that huge enclosed stadium, and the frozen rain as we walked out was biblical. So my claim that L1 was beyond DC’s capability was made in hindsight. At first I believed in him 100%, but like most people at one time believed theEarth was flat, it turned out Iwas wrong.
