Our fitness test for potential new signings is probably akin to kicking a car tyre when buying a car...

Yes some of our past signings and their fitness levels left a lot to be desired but perhaps we have turned a corner! Our whole recruitment now seems to be several steps above what we’ve been used to over many years. We'll see of course but the signs look far more hopeful of a proper process occurring when we sign players.
I guess the problems are more likely to happen when signings are left to the last minutes in any transfer window. When you’ll battling against the time on the last day after you’ve been let down by another possible signing you are more likely to cut corners or miss important checks out because you’ve only got minutes to complete the deal. This year we got all (?) our targets completed very early so we look better. Late Summer 2018 still makes me shiver though tbf it was the quality of them rather than their fitness! (I presume Payne could jump but I just never saw him do it). UTG!

Situations like Dominic Samuels could be handy for bringing someone in. He’s failed a fitness test somewhere, yet played several games at Blackburn looking fit after his recovery. If nobody else takes a chance on him in the next couple of weeks, he may be open to an attractive deal for us to bring in experience on our terms, and under the market value. Similar to what we did with Bodin. If we could add him to our squad on much reduced wages to his last contract, within our budget, and with a club option to extend his deal, then that could be a very good bit of business.

I know we are called the pirates but do we really need another one legged player, THD springs to mind? Not worth the risk imo.

That’s what I was saying with Bodin, who had a terrible injury record before and has done since. Also worth remembering that Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Andriy Arshavin, and Demba Ba all failed medicals and went on to have phenomenal stints. All about the deal we could make, but totally agree about being stuck with talented but unavailable players 👍

Scored half the amount of league goals today that Hanlan managed all last season.

He's looked a handful, but I don't think he's ever going to score loads of goals. So think he would do better, as part of a front 2. He certainly needs a goal to boost his confidence. Looked like he was in early on, but he left it to JML instead who then had to go wide. Last week he lacked conviction with the chance in the first half as well. A goal good change that.

Marvellous isn't it? To further add to our pain ex-players also finding the net today: Harrison, Taylor and even Tom Nicholls

Samuel hasn’t replaced Hanlan. Samuel is a goalscorer. Hanlan is a winger.

Very few on here thought him worth the risk once he failed the Rotherham medical so we can’t really feel aggrieved that we didn’t go in for him. I thought he was worth a conversation personally!
