And we were in the automatic promotion spots at Christmas - lets not forget we had all played different teams in different circumstances .... I would argue it was not even a real season ..... Lets see how they do over a full season. Over the course of the season (allowing for all the circumstances), under the points per game system used to determine the playoffs, Oxford made the playoffs and we didn't. That is just a fact. It will be interesting to see how we both get on next season, but as it stands I would say they have better options in midfield and attack, and are still attempting to sign Garath McCleary and re-sign Liam Kelly from Feyenoord and Marcus Browne from Middlesbrough (plus others no doubt). I thought the owner said they couldn't afford to keep the squad together and they were likely to lose a few player's?? Sure I read that somewhere. Thought they were making cut backs. Taylor wouldn't have been cheap either.

Robinson said: "There's a lot more work to be done to surround that. "I promised him there would be more players coming in, so I've got to make sure I bring in the players I told him I would do." Oxford looked pretty punch less in attack in the Playoffs with just Taylor as their main striker? Taylor is a "marquee sjgning" so they have already got one over the line. They lost both Tariq Fosu and Shandon Baptiste to Brentford during the season, but still managed to make the playoffs, with the outstanding Cameron Brannagan In midfield and James Henry chipping in with 12 goals. The signing of Marcus Browne also proved a big help with 5 goals and 4 assists in 14 league games.

Oxford United boss eyes 'five or six more' after Matty Taylor
THE move to secure Matty Taylor’s future at Oxford United could make further recruitment easier this summer.
A three-year deal for the striker ticked off a major issue on Karl Robinson’s to-do list.
But the U’s head coach wants it to be just the start of a busy period as he attempts to build another side capable of getting in the Sky Bet League One promotion race.
And securing a high-profile name early on cannot harm their chances.
“Other people will look at us and think ‘that’s a statement of intent’ and hopefully a few more can follow,” Robinson said.
“There’s five or six more players of that calibre we need to bring in to make us competitive next year in probably the most competitive League One for many years with the size of the clubs that are in it.
“That’s why he (Taylor) was a necessity.
“If he stays fit you’ve got a 20 goals per season man which everybody else is chasing.
“We’ve got ours in the bag early on."

It sounds like Oxford mean business again and I firmly expect them to be up there again next season despite the league being more competitive. Just went on their forum and they are apparently looking at a player called Paul O'Neil for Glentoran. 20 year old striker with a good record last season. Over to you pirate..

If we sign a decent ACM and a No 10, or SN takes that role, add a couple of young wingers then there's no reason why we can be just as competitive, the great unknown is the manager. As far as the play offs if GC had stayed and been backed in the transfer window I can't see why we wouldn't have also made them, given we were 4 pts ahead of Oxford with a game in hand at the time, in fact if we'd appointed an experienced manager or even Maher when GC quit, we could now well be looking forward to watching Championship next season.

There did not seem to be any interest above league 1 level in signing Taylor so the experts at that level obviously did not think he was good enough, we will never know now and despite what people think of him (and i have no time for him at all)he was never really given a decent run or chance at City, decent signing for Oxford, though IMHO does not produce when it really matters in the big games though i suppose 20 goals over a season certainly gives you a chance, any way this should put an end to the WYHHB threads and we can all move on and look forward to our 'beasts' of a backline giving him a 'friendly' kick up the ass or two!!

I never get this "was never given a decent run" comment as I can't see a manager signing a player then choosing not to play him if he was good enough, I sense Championship football was a step too far too soon, particularly, when he was only playing mid table L1 football for us at the time, having been playing non league ball 3(?) year before that, I guess he'll never regret his 3 year Championship contract, money wise! It'll be interesting to see who the favourites are for promotion come September, as Pompey & co seem to be worrying about the wage cap, the 3 relegated sides look potential basket cases and Sunderland have ownership issues, so this could be the perfect year for the likes of P'boro, Rovers & Oxford to get promoted.

Stats clearly don't prove he's good enough or City would have offered him another contact, or sold him to another Championship side. Although the way Oxford do business they probably now sell him for £3m next summer.
