Of course, goals aren't everything, but I think over 1000 in a career needs mentioning He didn't score over 1000 professional goals though. Loads of them were in Friendlies, Testimonials, Exhibitions etc. He also included his overhead kick for The Allies versus The Germans in Escape to Victory.

I think people underestimate the effect Maradona had on Argentina. This was a country that had lived under a military Junta that had seen over 30,000 Argentines go missing, a completely futile war that saw 650 young men killed and saw the whole country lied to about the result, they had moved into democracy under Alfonsín in 1983 but the country was still deeply scarred. Many questions were asked of the legitimacy of the 1978 World Cup win, especially with the 6-0 win against Peru. Maradona and 1986 gave the country back it's pride, the belief that they could be great again. In Argentina the only people to get close to Diego are the Perón's. He stood up for the poor because, he was poor. He wasn't a ruling class, he wasn't elite, he was a boy from a barrio that could play football. He never forgot where he was from and that was shown in his approach to life. He absolutely made mistakes and was not in anyway perfect but carrying the weight of a nation is a pretty big burden, he did it beautifully. A well reasoned , interesting , viewpoint.

He was one of a trio of greatest footballers of all time along with Pele and Messi. Daft to compare them really and they'll take some beating. I preferred Pele's silky smoothness to the Argentinians' similar jinky technique. He scored over 1000 goals in his career! Puskas. 598 goals in 619 appearances for club and Country. 156 goals in 180 appearances for Real Madrid. Eusebio. 465 goals in 500 appearances for club and Country. Both I would suggest should be included in any greatest list. Maradona. 293 goals in 582 games. IMHO the likes of Best, Cruyff, Eusebio, Puskas, DiStefano, Charlton, Zidane, Beckenbauer, Penrice sit in a tied just below the four greatest players of all time - Messi, Maradonna, Pele and Ronaldo. Those four stand alone for me with a case being made for each being the greatest, mainly on preference of style, era you lived through etc. One thing I would say is that we are all lucky to have watched the last 20 years of sport in general and have easy access to footage. We have seen Messi, Ronaldo, Tendulkar, Lara, Warne, Usain Bolt, Tiger Woods, Federer, O’Sullivan, AP McCoy, Schumacher, Hamilton, Lomu.....etc.

RIP Diego. Not many Englishmen hold him in high regard but what a talent. Corrupted by the mafia, drugs and the pressure of fame. Thanks for the memories, one of the best ever if not THE best and you could argue he didn't fulfill his potential. MODS please move if required. Good bye to the cheating junkie

Thing is Maradona as a footballer seemed fine, maybe really good. However good the technical skills and natural talent how much were they artificially enhanced by drugs or other forms of cheating? We will never know but it does mar his memory for me - ephedrine was taken to improve the physical performance whatever FIFA ruled and the rumours were rife way before the proof was found in the USA. Worshipped in his own country, ok, but here? Not by me. I can accept flaws and problems but cheating - never. Sadly the whole of football is riddled by cheating now - maybe Diego’s legacy?

Of course, goals aren't everything, but I think over 1000 in a career needs mentioning Thing is, Pele scored 618. The majority of which there isn’t much film of and is often disputed

No, Henry was a cheating bastard too. But at least he wasnt drugged up. So we are now dismissing people just because they've taken recreational drugs? I guess we should all dismiss The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac etc all because they've taken drugs while writing and recording great songs and albums? What about Movie stars? Diego Maradona is the greatest Footballer to have played the game, lets all just dismiss that because he sniffed Coke or got a Drugs ban for taking Ephredine which is used to treat Asthma and breathing difficulties? C'mon. Its beyond me how people stand up for that scabby little bastard. Only thing he didnt cheat was death.

Probably already been said but what Maradona achieved with Argentina & Napoli is pure sporting dreams, even more than Clough winning major trophies with unfashionable Derby & Forest.
Just imagine the fervour if Gazza had emulated Maradona in 1990 & also won the league for spurs (twice) back then...

Ah, FIFA. The bastion of truth and fair play. A bit like yourself Hugo 🙂 You're clearly still bitter about a handball in 1986. Argentina hated us because of the Falklands, and who could blame them, it was beat us at all costs, they did, and went onto win the World Cup. Diego Maradona also liked a line, again so what, plenty of others do to. He had flaws, again so many other mavericks and geniuses in their fields do, it's what makes them who they are. Diego Maradona was a great, and for me the greatest of them all. I mean, who isn't still bitter about it? I still have a strong dislike of Southgate for that penalty 😝
